1978 Daimler Double Six

The dad of my first girlfriend back in grammar skoool days had a Jaguar XJ 5.3C, her mum ran a 6.6 Pontiac Firebird at the same time.
I seem to remember girlfriend and her sister being dropped off by dad in the Pontiac one day instead of the Jag.
Asked why, she told me that her dad said the Pontiac was (slightly) more economical.
Which to me sounded like saying Oliver Reed drank slightly less than George Best....

A quick web search suggests that fuel injection on the V12 was introduced in 1975. That is much earlier than I thought. So it is indeed one of the first. Really good article here:

I honestly reckon that if Jaguar put these cars back into production today, with modern running gear and a refreshed (but classic looking) interior, they would fly off the shelves. I would buy one.

That's a lovely looking vehicle. As said previous, great colour combination. Everything about it looks just right.
Takes me back to the early 70's when my mothers fairly comfortably off Sister and husband used to visit our 2 up 2 down terraced house and park their 1969 'G' plate Burgundy/deep Red 420 Daimler outside. I was about 4/5 years old at the time and liking cars I used to pester them to take me and my brother out in it for a ride. My parents couldn't afford a car at the time so going out in their Daimler was always an occasion to behold. We used to feel lost sat in the back with all that plush cream leather and walnut trim. Great memories.

Absolutely amazing looking thing. Still looks in great condition considering the restoration is 20 years old. I guess it’s not seen a lot of use since 2000 has it? I love these old XJ’s.
My only connection to jags is my grandad bought a 420g new in the 60’s, before I was born and my dad had a 1988 manual 3.6 XJS in the 90’s which I drove a few times. It was a lovely drive, felt very solid despite the iffy BL interior build quality.

My favourite is story is "Across France and Back in a Day", a tale of driving from Dunkirk to Marseilles and back in a day in a Rolls Royce Corniche. The day was 22 May 1973, the distance 1,330.8miles, the average including stops was 7657mph and petrol consumption was 11.35mpg. Motoring for motoring's sake, indeed.



I look forward to reading with interest more about this spectacular 66. Is the motor still regarded as the smoothest ever?
