That’s not the calsonic or a proper group A shell, just a rep.

engine is certainly potent in that one though.

Another one. Just punching aluminium in this video really.

Been doing a lot in the background too. Both in real life and on the skyline build. We'll get there.

worth filling that diff case with petrol and leaving overnight to ensure the welds have no leaks
Its in the plan, although part of me doesn't want to know smile

Actually just waiting on some AN fittings to weld on, then yeah probably should leak check. Was going to re-blast it too for an even pattern too.

certainly a lack of finished shots in here. And i cant be bothered to re-do the video, so here's how it stands at the mo:

Trying to get hold of some pretty niche things at the moment, and it's sapped a huge amount of momentum out the build. Will persevere.

Thanks guys, appreciate the postitive words. Dead right about finding some wins to move forwards with. I'm just doing the rear bulkhead because its a job I've been dreading, once over that hurdle I think I'll be feeling better. Filming will resume afterwards smile

The engine was a massive kick in the... but as of last night I've decided to do a much more cost effective engine build that will actually replicate the group A cars. Not quite what the original plan was, but RB's are stupid, you need to remind yourself that 600+ hub hp is still going to be fast and competitive.

Alex, you're a good presenter - very natural in front of the camera.

Chin-up, take your time to think about the strategy for the motor.
Being a racing car, you know it's a different set of requirements to a tuned road car.

Headline power figures need to play second fiddle to heat management, lubrication, breathing, fuel supply and
for anyone outside of a sponsored professional race team - durability.

For what you're doing I'd be researching how to make it the strongest motor your budget allows.
Build it for 900 bhp & then run it at 600 bhp and you'll have peace of mind.

It's unfashionable to say it in the era of Porsche GT3's and modern Ferrari's, but my grandfather, a metallurgical engineer always drummed into me that rpm kills engines.
Cheers mate. Yeah we're certainly aligned on engine requirements!

My top attributes have always been heat management and oil control. What was so annoying about this bottom end working out, is it would have been 1300hp capable, running at 750-800.

It'll still be good. We'll get there!

This may look weird to people who aren't as totally obsessed with niche GpA parts as I am... but this is actually really cool...

Cheers guys smile glad everyone's enjoying it!

Finally managed to get hold of some really tricky interior bits, so it'll be good to start making some videos where I can bolt stuff to the car again soon.

YES ! Last minute crimbo update... love seeing updates to this post, I genuinely find your videos fascinating with the right amount of wit/babble/information/explanation etc.

Have a good xmas and I expect another update by 2nd of Jan latest laugh
Cheers mate! Haha I doubt it man, haven’t even picked up the window regs yet.

Chucked a couple more trim pieces in yesterday, steering column, and brake bias knob... but didn’t film anything. Hard to cover the little misc bits.

I must admit I'm not quite sure why you're drilling the dash and removing the internals from the vents but I enjoyed watching you do it!

I was thinking the same, then when you explained about the vinyl shrinking to expose the holes underneath and about the vents on the original cars it all makes sense. #becausegroupa
Haha glad you're enjoying it regardless. Yeah thats it, I probably could have been more obvious with it. Basically if I ever say 'blue car' I'm referring to the calsonic, which tended to have the peak gpA modifications done to it. Bit desperate saying "calsonic" all the time though huh!.

One thing is clear with this build that separates it from the other builders.

That is that you are approaching this from a primarily engineering perspective and not just giving people blank cheque

The build is exactly what I enjoy; Function and a always looking at the big picture. It’s clear that you are thinking about how the car will feel as you show it into a bend. No click bait.

That said I would maybe Chuck some beer tokens your way for actual beer or to help with the more obscure parts. You could do some shout outs and who knows get some car guru sponsorship!?

I’d Love to do this and I think that I wild find a ropey 1996 escort cosworth big turbo and do a nut and bolt restore. One day. Keep it up and carry on

Merry Christmas!111
Cheers Davie smile Yeah I don't have the money to pay people to do things, and I much prefer to be disappointed in my own work than other peoples!

Money is fast becoming an issue because of the engine issues. But, it's always just been a fun way to share the build and motivate myself to keep pace. I don't want anything to take away from that or make it feel like a percentage of the build isn't mine.

Stellar job on the press tool mate, I think that worked even better than maybe you even expected it to. smile
Cheers mate! It worked out really well yeah lol. Although I think if I were to have another go I could get the shape a touch better.

By far my favourite build on youtube and tied with amc_adams m3ti build on here!
Fantastic stuff.
Awesome cheers dude smile thanks for the support & glad you're enjoying it!

Righttt... this one took the longest to figure out. Window regs might not get everyone's heart rates up... but there you go. This has been one of the most satisfying things to figure out yet.

Caught back up after a Christmas hiatus on YouTube watching - bloody brilliant stuff as always.

It's an odd feeling to have such an intimate knowledge of a car you've never actually seen in the flesh. Literally almost every single bolt, cut and weld.

Fascinating... keep going!
Cheers buddy! Yeah almost... I think the only bit I didn't cover was the front turret and inner arch modifications, and that was just because I hadn't decided to film anything yet. That was a full week's worth of head scratching and fabrication. I'll definitely go over it at some point though smile

Certainly will keep going smile I think I'm going to have to throttle back on the build a little though during this first quarter. I want to go back over some of the parts I've designed (pedal box, sump extension, baffles etc) and refine the models so I can remanufacture them for people. I need to start bringing in some extra income or this isn't going to get finished! I've had people asking for things, and the amount of hours I've put into product development it would be a shame not to help them out.

One of the things I like about your videos is that when you get something wrong, you admit it and show us how you've fixed it - so many builds gloss over the problems and pretend it all went well. It never goes 100% smoothly and the most interesting stuff is often the bits where a rethink is needed.

You've even got my wife hooked and she won't come within 100 yards of the garage when I'm bodging prepping a car to the highest standards.
Mate it was such a **** when those regs didn't go in the doors. They took so long to source, and I was so sure it would just go in lol. But yeah there's no point in covering that up!

I think the only thing the videos are guilty of is not conveying the time things take. But if I don't edit that stuff out each episode would be 50 hours long lol.

That's awesome mate, glad your both enjoying it smile Yeah my missus wont come in the unit, certainly doesn't help it's 3 degrees and full of rats, luckily she's very understanding and supportive or I'd not be in the position I am.

Quite like this one. Nice when things work out that you've been figuring out for over a year.

Next up, I'm unsure. I have got some body trim pieces I fancy having a go at making, so because of lacking engine parts I'm trying to get tooling in place so I can start that.

I've just started going through your videos and they're absolutely fantastic to watch. I stumbled across your thread as it was linked from somewhere else on PH and I'm full of admiration for your fabrication skills. Amazing project smile
Cheers mate smile glad you're enjoying it, and glad you find your way to the videos too lol. My skills aren't that good, always look at Furicks IG feed etc and makes me feel terrible about my tig welding. Baby steps though.

Your welding is pretty good from what I've seen! I've got a small Clarke hobby welder and I'm in need of practise with it. I just watched you welding that roll-over jig and bits of your floor pan and thought it came out really well. I'm dreaming of the day I've got a big enough garage to work inside like that. I'd be making stuff too, and my rusty Puma would be in bits having replacement panels welded in!
Yeah it's all about seat time with fabrication huh. I think welding is similar (I assume, I like to assume) to learning the guitar. There's no break through moments, you just slowly get better over time, but the changes are very visible.

All pumas are rusty man smile cool though. Hopefully getting an ST170 shed soon to carry me through next year.

Well, he looks to be quite decent at it bow
He's the chap who invented all the cups I use on the TIG welders for decent shielding. The top level tig welders are mind blowing. I rarely watch car stuff on youtube, I always end up watching welding & machining videos really. David Wilks, ThisOldTony, Weld.com etc.

I'm not sure how many people will be into this... (lol) but it's totally my vibe. Extremally slow workshop conversations. Kanekid is just an incredible welder, great to see someone of such quality who is all about structural welds rather that art pieces.

I think the stoned chilled out attribute can be what makes a great tig welder haha. Even the legend Moffat usually took a couple minutes to get a relatively short sentence out.
