Excellent purchase! I remember visiting Roman’s in the way back from the German GP in 2013, we’d seen an SLR Stirling Moss and naturally gravities to these in the car park.

They had dropped to silly cheap numbers at that point-I want to say £70-80k? It was obvious they were going to be a classic.

I know someone who has a convertible but with the missing doors I always thought that was a missed opportunity.

Wheels are back and on, car is serviced and almost ready. DK have ordered me some new gas struts for the doors which apparently were not perfect on one side so those need to go on and it’ll be steam cleaned underneath too.

Looking good now tho:

Wheels finished in Mercedes DB180 silver
which is the sixties colour they used to paint the 300SL bodies. Diamond cut gone forever and good riddance!

Followed a white one from the Lake District to the petrol station today, looked amazing. Some bonnet on these things!

Yeah and the mad thing is that once you open that bonnet the engine is feet from the front of it! It’s crazy!

That looks fantastic.

I suspect these will be more appreciated in the future than they have been to date!

I was thinking the same, it pulled up at the adjacent pump to mine and you could tell how far back it was set and how the cabin firewall was pushed right back to make it mid engined.

Massive bulkhead behind those gorgeous AMG bucket seats too-fuel tank?

The bucket seats look like recaro Pole Positions to me, trimmed nice. This one and most of the other “normal” SLS don’t have those and are fitted with normal E class looking chairs instead. I saw a set of the bucket seats on eBay (along with some ceramic brakes I noticed) but I’ve read (I think it was on the Romans buying guide) that the buckets are not a popular thing for resale/value presumably because people find them less comfortable?

Black Series cars get them as standard - maybe the one you saw was a BS?

Love the colour Julian, you are going to have to build a bigger garage at this rate

Fabulous looking car - I just love the proportions of it.

That huuuuge bonnet and they still stuff the engine under the bulkhead

And the gullwing doors are achingly cool as well...

Enjoy it!

I had a 2013 GT version with the Gearbox and suspension upgrades. Definitely a nice package and very brutish. I felt that the exhaust was the real source of most of the engine noise. I swapped it for a Ferrari 458 but do have to say I missed the drama of driving it. Not the sharpest tool like the 458..more a big but beautifully made hammer.

Yes it’s amusing how little space there is taken up by the motor!

Edited because I noticed you had a GT car so that came with the upgrades as standard - have you driven the normal one and therefore can you comment on the upgrades?

Lovely car.

Like the colour and interior.

I said on a CLK Black thread recently, that I'm not usually a Merc man, but perhaps I am.

This looks so much better than the fussy, chintzy stuff they make nowadays.

Future classic, if not already.
