Im looking for a daily driver and the SLS is a real contender although I’m focused on the Roadster as my head bangs against the ceiling on the SLS. It would pair up nicely with it‘s slightly older sibling:

Yeah that’s just beautiful. Congratulations on owning the most fabulous machine! Get an SLS they’re amazing!

Thanks for the best wishes from everyone. I can confirm that fulfilling the dream feels as good as I had hoped!

Fingers crossed for Wednesday at Mercedes...

Oooooooofffffff that’s lovely.

Despite the niggles, and despite the ride, that is absolutely top-drawer. Enjoy it!

We need more... more photos and with the light behind you so that we can see the detail of this light absorbing monster!

Also, I think that you should keep it debadged.

Amazing car, I was not even aware of that model...presumably it was built with a nod to the original 300SL I guess ?

Agree with the de-badging... I always take the badges off my cars as it looks so much 'cleaner' without them.

The alloys look so much better now as well.

This is just IMO....but I would have that lovely colour lacquered so it would resemble the original SL in gloss paint....

What a stunning machine. Only saw one in the flesh and it sounded epic. Enjoy.

Due an update on this car.

It’s been at Mercedes for over a month to get the wipers sorted. It turned out to be a faulty signal acquisition unit at the front. That basically also doubles as a fuse box.

You can see there is a little bit of corrosion on some of the pins. That unit turned out to be reasonably priced - about £300 plus vat or so - but during the course of the work Mercedes also had cause to investigate the handbrake actuator. That had to come from Germany and was closing in on a grand, fitted. Final bill that’s due to be kindly picked up by DK engineering is a little over £3000 including vat.

Whilst I was at it I had the windscreen changed as the old one had lots of stone chips (the roads in Malaysia are reckoned to be poor) and also the sat nav updated. I picked up a £1600 or so invoice for these bits.

I’ve got to say that I’m not too happy with Mercedes at this point. They’ve marked the steering wheel and gear knob, the red leather is now filthy dirty and the car has done an additional 45 miles whilst guzzling a third of a tank of juice. Those were not careful test miles, then. Even more annoyingly there is now a clunk as you turn left caused by something dangling loose inside the centre console. Insult to injury on the basis of the amount of test miles covered yet I heard that at the first roundabout.

Trying to decide now if I should take it back in to them and risk more issues or just pull it to bits myself and fix it.

On a happier note the car is bloody awesome - such a brute. I do think it needs 19 inch back wheels though - the 20 inch ones coupled with the spring rates (unknown) are just a step too far for UK roads.

Fantastic car and your restraint in not going absolutely batst crazy at Mercedes is admirable, I’d be back there like a shot.

Apologies for not repsonding to your earlier questions. My GT had switchable and adaptive damping and the ride was good. However, I did get 2 dampers replaced under warranty as mine were knocking.

I used the following guide to remove the light..

That’s brilliant thanks I’ll have a go at that. What conditions did your clonk happen under?

Your car looked brilliant. Why did you sell her?

The knocking and creaking was over small bumps. The initial though was that the mountings were at fault but even after changing them it was the same and so the dampers were changed too.

The car was definitely sharper than the standard car and the gearbox is worth the upgrade. there was a guy on PH that took his to the factory to have his done. Worth searching for his thread if you haven't already. He had a big issue with the sound system quality on his car.

I sold the car because as much as I tried to fall in love with the colour, I couldn't. I bought it as it was the only GT available at the time and I hoped time with it would make me love the looks but it didn't happen.

A great and beautifully built but the 458 that replaced it was more my cup of tea. Currently there are no supercars in my stable and I am out on the hunt for something that ticks all the boxes. One of these in a darker should would be perfect but are now very scarce here in the UAE.

I totally understand. I had an M4 in pearl white and I absolutely loved that car but every time I saw it I just wanted it to be a different colour. Any colour except pearl white, in fact. I don’t know why but that’s a fact. I replaced it with a blue silver one that I still have three years later!

Thanks for the heads up on the suspension. My car makes this sort of single creak when you unsettle the suspension over a large deflection at low speed. It sounds like some kind of bush.

I think I’ve resolved myself to fix the car in my own workshop. I just don’t trust the main dealer - I don’t think they understand the mind of a collector - and I have no reason to think that the technicians in there will behave any differently a second time around. I’ve parked her up in the garage nose to nose with the GT3 and I’m currently enjoying a quiet beer just looking at these beautiful cars.

I’ll strip it down next weekend I think To fix Mercedes’ shoddy work then get it on the ramp and try to work out what’s up with the creak.

I have a real soft spot for these. I had the semi skimmed engine in my C63 PPP and it was always an event, this must be that turned up to 11.

Tip of the cap for the GT3 and M4 too. I'd love a GT3 next but feel they're still a little out of reach. Which one do you have?

It really is - engine is a masterpiece.

Thanks for the interest yes GT3 is a 991.1 - equally fabulous thing. Don’t ask me which I prefer both are mega!

That’s a cool photo.

Shame to hear that the service from the dealer was less than it should have been.

It seems like main dealers are only really set up to deal with lease / company cars...basic servicing only for people who don’t really care. My BMW went in for a KDS alignment which they did a poor job of. Took it to someone who knew what they were doing and they’d left the tie rods undone, not even finger tight.

Hope you manage to sort the car yourself.

Thanks very much.

The car has been sat unused since I got it back from Mercedes, waiting on their proposed resolution to the issues and I’ve chosen to not touch it myself until I get an official reply - due this next week.

I did reverse it out of the garage though on Sunday...

If they can’t come up with an appropriate reply I will crack on myself - I’m not risking such a gorgeous car with anyone less than someone who takes responsibility for their actions. Let’s see...

Absolutely wonderful car - the colour reminds me of an update of the bornite that my R129SL is painted in.

Does anyone remember, some years ago there was a one off TV program with David Gandy and Tiny Tempah? They both turned up at the same bash, Gandy in a 300SL Gullwing and Tinie Tempah in an SLS. Can't find it on the good ol' internet.
