Hello all, thinking of swapping my current CLS Shooting Brake for a lightly used 2019/2020 V90 Cross Country and was looking for a bit more info from any owners.

Spec - there seems to be basic Cross Country, then trim levels of Pro, or Plus, or Nav Plus with a vast array of option packs. Trying to find out the difference between them is difficult as the Volvo configurator only seems to have the one trim level currently with various packs including . What's the difference, what extras couldn't you life without, what do you wish you had?

Engine - I'll be going for the diesel, D5 is preferable but is the D4 acceptable? Performance on paper of the D4 is comparable to my current car. MPG on both?

Build quality - I've never had a Volvo, traditionally they seem to wear mileage well, are the current Geely Volvos a similar story? My Mercedes is creaking and rattling from various areas after 30k miles and it drives me crazy. Do the diamond cut alloys dissolve like they do on a Merc?

I just want a large wafty car that will take me and stuff long distances in comfort, with the added bonus of being able to handle some tracks when I go hillwalking.

From a V90 CC T5 owner, so can't comment directly on diesel/performance, however a friend has a D4 CC and it happy with it. Obviously my T5 is a lot faster, but only does 26-7 mpg (up to 36mpg on a long run). The only issue I've heard come up is the Power Pulse pipe blowing on the D5 model, though how many are affected I don't know.

Trim levels, basically up to 2019, there was the standard CC and then the Pro version. The standard version is similar to Momentum spec with a few extra bits, then the Pro added HUD or heated screen, fog lights, and keyless go, I believe. To be honest, I've never missed any of these. For MY2020, they did a single CC trim (the Plus) which is closer to the Pro model.

There are packs which are nice to have, these give the additional safety stuff like Blind Spot and Rear cross traffic, the 360 cameras and the one with the pano roof, however the standard spec is all you really need, it's got DAB, Spotify, Nav and Pilot Assist which is great for long motorway journeys.

Build quality is good, nothing squeaks or rattles, but I've only done 8k in it, however the interior is a lovely place to be, I can't comment on the diamond cut (19s?), as mine's on 18s which ride great.

Another boggo spec T5 leaser here. My interior is also good on the squeak/rattles front and looks like it'll stand the test of time quite well. The leather is quite soft and idents from things like car seats seem to take a while to go, but they do eventually.

I added Carplay to mine, I would have liked a reversing camera but it seemed overpriced. If I was buying I'd probably look for one with BLIS and a heated steering wheel.

I have a T5 V90 CC too! It was new in September last year and so far I've done 11k miles.

I did have a V90 D4 estate as a hire car when mine had to go back for a software fault (airbag light on, interior lights not working etc...) and the engine did feel more suited to the car. The torque matched the car better and didn't feel short of power (although I'd go for the D5 if only to feel better!). This Volvo followed a previous E220d estate and whilst the engineering in that was better, the Volvo is more comfortable and has more toys!

The spec on mine is fine - it has lots of things such as adaptive cruise, self guidance on the motorway (whatever its called!), reversing camera, keyless entry etc... However, the most impressive thing on the car is the active LED headlights!! Probably the stand-out feature on the car for me!

I'd suggest taking one out for a run and see what you think, or if you're in my part of the world, happy to show you around mine.

Thanks for the comprehensive replies, that's the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks also for the offer of the look round, but I'm in the West of Scotland so a little out of range!

They do seem very well specced as standard, but it looks like I'll need to go for pro/plus then, or one that has one of the packs as I'd like the heated windscreen, and ideally memory seats as there's around a foot in height difference between the Mrs and I and readjusting every couple of days gets tedious.

Interesting comment about the E220d being better engineered as that's what I owned previous to the current car, and I do miss it, but don't like the new range of Mercs at all and it's time for a change - a little used V90CC seems very good value at the moment, just need to find the right spec and colour combo - there's a well specced car locally but it has blue paint and a very orangey looking leather interior which isn't for me hehe

I had a Late 2018 V90 CC D4 with Polestar.

A good comfy car but mpg was terrible.

Be careful as I was told my car wasn't part of the recall for Manifold and fire issues.

4 months later it was a burnt out shell when going to the shops.

How terrible is terrible on the mpg front?

Thanks for the heads up on the recall, I'm looking at 2019 cars , ideally less than 12 months old to give me a couple of years of manufacturers warranty, hopefully the problem was addressed by then.

usually around 40mpg probably more to do with its size.

usually did 37 back forth to work 20 miles each way

Thanks - one man's terrible is another's acceptable wink

Ive been driving big auto estate cars for a few years - in my book anything over 35mpg in something that heavy is acceptable, anything over 40mpg is good thumbup

have a 2018 v90 cc pro. which i pretty much stole at 7months old ..
it has all the safety bits. active drive pilot thing all teh other trick volvo bits
grey with sumptios amber leather. with black headlining.
full glazed sunroof ..
360 cam etc
town driving , school runs it will averge 35-38 on a run it will do 42-46.
this is the auto 9 speed d4.

its a fabulous car, i chage my cars alot, as little things annoy me, ive had a lot of cars of my own and company cars.
this is simply a stunning car. weveb had it over a year now, both the wife and me both agree its the best car weve ever owned .


obviously all the toys are nice and do make the ownership experiance soo much nicer
sunroof is a must for me in all my cars , heated steering wheel which i thought was a gimmick, is fabulous, and would always spec this in future.
it has spare wheel, and no add blue !!! would never buy a car without a spare or space saver..
its so bloody comfy you get out after hours feeling refreshed.
Volvo delarehips are nice places to spend time. we always get great service .(ipswich)
the best looking design estate on the market, the interior design is brilliant.
V90cc has lovely back end compared tho vanila v90 and also has decent wheels and tirey profile that eats up pot holes..


negatives..
the gearbox / engine is a little hesitant from the off (not enough to annoy me )
its a big car to get used too first.. sensors or 360 cam is a must!
i prefere the rear more vertical glass of the v60cc,
ride can be a litle choppy at times , (not harsh)
some tyres are more noisier than need to be.. our second set of cheaper brand made a huge difference t the stock supplied ones.
it wears rear brake pads at 30k miles due to the active pilot assist applies more rearward breaking to stop the car oiccupants from noticing teh subtle breaks, Volvo know how to charge for these, but i just got them done at a local specialist for half price using the OEM parts.

Have pretty much decided it has to be a V90 CC, D4 engine (too many horror stories about the D5), 'Plus' trim level, climate pack with heated windscreen/steering wheel, dark leather, silver/dark grey/blue paint, spare wheel. Anything else is a bonus, they are pretty loaded in that trim level anyway.

They seem to come on the market (and sell quickly) at around £30-£32k for a lightly used version up to 1yr old, just keeping my eyes peeled for the right spec - I've bought too many cars over the years that were 'nearly' the spec I wanted then regretted it.
