If you bought her an X1/9 now, it would give you time to get it all sorted by the time she gets licenced.
128 3P Berlinetta for the more discerning offspring, surely?
Fiat 850 Coupe, but too spenner (12K one on eBay, stunning 14K one in New Zealand, to which add 3K ish for shipping plus UK faff costs), or Triumph Herald 13/60 (still affordable), BUT her mum will not be keen on an old car without modern safety measures, and even I can see the force in that position when the driver is inexperienced*, so I reckon that a six to ten year old modern Fiat 500 with the most teen-insurable engine size might be the thing.

* I have only had two crashes, and they were both in 1989, my first year of driving, and I was blooming 27 at the time. Both were one million percent my fault. I had a word with myself and went on a skid course, and a defensive/performance driving course in 1990, by which time I was driving a 1987 E30 325i and a Triumph Vitesse Mark II, because in those days you could insure such things as a young and new driver. I have BTW been a straight six addict ever since then, but I do not currently possess any kind of six cylinder engine, straight or V. I do like the V8 in my modern Jag, but I often wish that it was a straight six, and I miss the Busso V6 that was in the Alfa 156 that I had for about ten years.

A few days ago I mentioned a poster of three Italian beauties I have on my garage wall. It came from Auto Italia magazine years ago and the other side is a poster of a 288 GTO. Still I display this side.

Ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh. Thanks for this!

This Italiana business is getting a bit addictive....

In the early '70s my dad hung a picture of the lovely Ms.Loren in the hallway of our 'late '50s council house, it was one of those cheapo paintings done in the style of the green skinned Chinese lady by Tretchikov....

Torbryan in Devon, September '71....

This morning I was sat at Wellingborough on a track reballasting job going absolutley nowhere for five hours, those five hours soon vanished in a haze of youtube clips of Iain Tyrrell's Workshop, Harry's Garage, Fiat 124s, 127s and 130s, Alfetta GTVs, Lancia Betas and Maserati QPIVs.... spin

Is that you in the family chariot in Devon P5BNij? That pub has been the Old Church House Inn since at least the early 90s. I wonder what the sign says in the picture. King's Head maybe?

Alas not, I only wish it were my little chariot. Could be King's Head, looks like 'enery VIII in the sign.

Great looking 124, I've enjoyed catching up on the posts.

I think these engines are pretty tunable, mines currently being rebuilt by 'Classic Engine Workshop'. We've spec'd the build with euro compression ratio pistons, fast road cams and waffle manifold with dual weber 40 IDF's.

I've also recently purchased a NOS Abarth exhaust from the Neatherlands which came with a load of really interesting documentation.

Look forward to hearing more on your car.

Absolutely, I have a sixteen year old daughter and we've acquired from family a 10 year old Merc 190 on 40k.

She's not particularly interested in cars so it was an easy sell.

Errrm, is there such a thing as a ten year old Merc 190? I know that this thread is about time travel, but is it 2003 already? The smallest engine on a Merc 190 was 1.8 litres, I think, and that allied to an 80s/90s German midi-tank doesn't sound to me the obvious choice for a teenager's first car.

Or is there some new Merc called a 190?

Ah! Now I understand Great choice because no doubt SUPER TANKY. Tanks? I tried to interest my daughter in being like Jess from "New Girl" (a TV show that she enjoys) by having a Volvo 145, but no interest, and they are a bit loooong and a bit two litre (albeit slow two litre) for a new driver.

I have just blatted the Fiat around the lanes near Thame, and also briefly along the M40. Spotted: a pre war Bugatti, a Triumph Spitfire, a Series 3 Landy, two 1980s 911s, and, overhead, a Hawker Hurricane. Sports bikers give the Fiat the nod.

The car got hot, especially after a brief stop at Stokenchurch for a glug of V-Power for the car and a bottle of San Pellegrino for me, but I had that 70s pleasure of whacking the heating full on, driving on the flat at 40 ish with low revs for a bit, and then rolling down the A40's descent of the Chiltern escarpment in neutral, with the temp needle visibly moving rapidly to the left. Back into gear and on with the show from half way down.

Photos to follow.

You mean the Extinction Rebelion peeps who have painted over Give Pease a Chance on the Viaduct that carries the Chiltern Line across the M25? Yes, dang them for ruining a good graffito.

If you fancy an orgy fest of wonderful Italian cars, may I recommend l’auto et moto d’época show that takes place in Padova each October. Wonderful cars, oodles of obscure spare parts, and the delights of the old town for a fun evening enjoying the food and wine.
Highly recommended.

You're welcome! (even older than your car)

Heater on and neutral down hill is a necessary rite of passage, but generally more enjoyable in hindsight.

Cool! I once got stitched up in Padova after an accident in a ski bar in Cortina. Very fine place, Padova, and the Italian NHS is very good.

Pics! The background is one of the gates to Thame Park, where the formerly fine house was once owned by a Pink Floyd, apparently, but has been empty a while and looted for its architectural features by some dodgy investment types whilst English Heritage and the Council did nowt to stop this.
