To finish off the topic...

Back in October I took the front brake calipers to bits. The pads needed a lot of force to lever / whack out of the carriers, one slider bolt was rusted stuck and the whole setup was just generally in poor condition. I used a floor standing bike pump with a gym ball attachment to pop the cylinders out and they were both rusty and scored.

I spent a few hours wire brushing the caliper bodies and carriers then gave them a few coats of high temperature paint.

I then used the caliper refurbishment kit that came with new cylinders, clips, seals & boots. I think next time on a common old car I would probably just pay for refurbished calipers as it took a long time, I only saved ~£40 and I don't think I got as good a finish as somewhere that can blast the parts.

A package from CarParts4Less arrived with new pads, discs and fitting kit.

I needed to file down the faces of the carrier where the fitting kit slider bits go so the pads would fit and move nicely, but other than that it went together easily.

Pedal feel improved a lot and the brakes engaged earlier in the pedal travel, not sure total stopping power improved for emergency situations, but definitely worth it.

Have you been contacted regarding the recall for the window switch?

I got a call this week but ours is long gone and living the dream on a French ski resort now.

The brakes was the last job I did before I got busy and couldn't spend much time on the car. I managed to replace the power steering fluid using a turkey baster, but never got round to doing the auto transmission fluid.

Someone in the shed thread asked if a bike fitted in the back without removing wheels, my old 26" wheel mountain bike did, I think a more modern mountain bike might struggle.

The last journey for the car for me was to take us to the airport ready to emigrate to Kenya on New Year's Eve, it took 5 suitcases in the back seats and 2 suitcases, a double pushchair and a single pushchair in the boot.

My parents decided that they would hold off on selling the car for us due to Covid, then a few days later bought it to use during winter.

They really liked it for ease of access and space. Then my sister said she could do with borrowing it for a few months as they have no car, so it's just gone off to London to help with a house refurbishment and avoiding public transport. Her sister-in-law has asked to have it when they are done with it, so I think it's going to become a sort of shared family backup car!

Meanwhile I settled in Kenya and decided I wanted 7 seats, so bought a 2008 Mitsubishi Pajero with the 3.8l v6 engine.

It's slow, comfy, hates corners, but good for the terrible roads and country tracks. It has fairly poor bodywork, but the engine & gearbox seem sound; on 180,000km which is just over 110,000 miles. I was imported from Japan about 5 years ago with 95,000km on it, service history is patchy, so I'm slowly working through. Mechanic labour is cheap here (~£2.50 per hour at a backstreet garage even at foreigner prices), but parts are about 50% more expensive and counterfeits are a problem.

That's quite a change.... Not the car, but your location!
I hope everything goes well for you.

Will you start a separate thread for the Pajero* ?
(*I love the Spanish translation of that.... Mitsubishi clearly didn't investigate the meaning in major languages.)

No problem and apologies for my terrible timing, it feels like I've stood up during the cliffhanger at the end of a movie just to tell everyone you can buy popcorn outside.

Good luck with the new adventure and the new vehicle, I'll gladly follow a similar post on your experiences with that as I've enjoyed this one smile
