Been following this thread for a long time now, and I have to apologise now for going a bit off topic... I have a '95 T5 which has developed a problem, and with the knowledge and experience here it seems the best place to put a question... I've had the car for about 5 years now, and it recently started missing... then with a huge backfire it suddenly lost all power over 3000rpm and wouldnt accelerate over 35mph... solved by a full service which included new leads and and it turned out the replacement of two split turbo hoses... drives beautifully, but, under heavy boost it momentarily cuts out... use the kickdown... cuts out... drive in a more sedate (but still quick) fashion and it's fine.... So, Any ideas muchly welcome, and apologies again to the OP and all for straying....

TIA, Richard.

Nice update. Still looking great.

I’m about to put my V70 T5 on the road after owning it for almost two years.
I have a great local mechanic but I think a visit to Tim looks wise for some specialist knowledge. I’ll have to make it an overnighter as I’m up in Northumberland.
My car has a Shemtek remap. I’d have used him for the work but he came across as a bit of t1t when I spoke to him about the car.

Richard it sounds like your car is over boosting. Do you have a gauge fitted or access to one? I know on my old RS turbos and Cosworths they’d cut power quite violently when they over-boosted.
Could be as simple as adjusting your wastegate actuator, etc.

I've just read your thread, from start to finish and have enjoyed. I too remember the 850R Estates in the BTCC. I've always liked the 850 Estates. You can't beat a fast Volvo, amazing machines. I had until recently a V60 D5 with a polestar remap, I loved it.

I was very sorry to hear of your issues and hope that you are now better.

Looking forward to updates.

Mine car did the same (apart from kickdown as my R is a manual), ended up being some of vacuum lines had perished and split, so the pressure sensor and the wastegate actuation was all out, and cutting out when at WOT. Replaced them all, and that fixed it.

Guys, knew I was in the right place smile er, what’s a stage 0 ? Thanks for the responses.. need to re-read and figure what I can do myself and what I can’t.. the boost gauge (needle not marked with psi) hasn’t worked for a good while.. scratchchin

Also had a dump valve fitted - yes i know i am overgrown man-child but it just adds to the comedy value of the car which i don't take too seriously, after all, how can take any car seriously that was resembles a breeze block!
I do love a dump valve!
I had one on my old 480 turbo - resembled a wedge of cheese!

What I found with that though was that the old Jetronic system couldn't compensate quickly enough for the lost air, so it would actually make the car 'backfire' once the exhaust was hot enough.

Essentially a full fluid service, sparks the works - if memory serves..

Still miss my old 850 T5 CD estate smile

Good to hear that it’s still going well. It looks great in red and I liked the picture with the other one.

There’s nothing wrong with letting your inner child out sometimes! I like the burbles from my exhaust when it’s hot….so on a Welsh B road surrounded by walls it happens quite a lot. laugh

Love it, not many 480s left now, all have dissolved with the dreaded rot! Lovely looking things though!

Really enjoying the thread OP. Your Volvo is looking fantastic. A 480 turbo is the only Volvo I've owned. It was a fantastically odd thing. Amazing interior, pop up headlights and good fun to drive.

Hi Op,

V70 is 1999 on a V plate. Last of the Mk1s.

Yep I’ll have to plan a trip to Tim’s then. I need to get it on the road and put some miles on it and make a snagging list.

Sounds like I should have him look over my mapping then. hehe

Awesome car OP! Forever love the older volvos. Glad to see you've kept it. Is an absolutely wonderful spec car.

I've a v40 T4 lurking in a lock up, which used to be my daily. Nowhere near as cool as a T5 car though. Whilst it never failed me in my travels - did always seem to be chasing an issue. Boost leak, oil leak, PCV blocked, cracked coil plugs etc etc. However has the most fantastic intake sound! Truly asbo levels of dump. Is being turned to a Werther's original spec track car, sans wood veneer.

"Werther's original spec track car, sans wood veneer" that has made me chuckle!! T4's are a rare beast, and surprisingly quick, a local guy who attends a classic car meet has dropped a T4 lump into the back of a classic mini! Bonkers bit of kit!!
Lovely knob!!

If it wasn't for saving weight, the wood veneer would stay. There was arguments that they were faster then 850/v70 T5s. Specially the phase 1's which have been dyno'd at up to 225bhp. But I cannot verify this information unfortunately. Rare but nobody cares.
That's cool! Have you also seen the colt with the T4 lump in it? Seems to end up in a few interesting places.

I’d say Bedford is a pretty safe track, flat with no camber. Nice long back straight as well.

I’m quite happy to meet up for a trackday in my T-5R.

Last time I did a trackday there was in my V10 M5 with a modded exhaust, quite loud, passed the noise test ok. My 850 has 3 inch from turbo back, cat less, fairly loud but wouldn’t think it would fail noise test.

If you get him to give it a total once over, he would be sure to be sympathetic and prioritise, based on budget and urgency, hes been nothing short of exceptional with our 850!
Well he sounds like who I’m going to go and see then, as a few other folk have recommended him on other threads on here.

I have 2 or 3 main issues I want sorting. None of them stop me from using it though luckily.

Fantastic cars and a superb thread...

Back in 2000 when I passed my driving test (I was 21 and a bit lazy before that when it came to driving) I learned to drive in 3 cars...

My mums 4 speed manual Nissan Micra Collette laugh, my Dad's Ovlov 940 hearse and his driving instructor colleague at Lancs Constab, 850R manual...

I learned how to parallel park those ASAP with the theory of if I can park them, I can park anything! biggrin

My Dad soon had a Volvo V70 R and then he moved to BMW

But always loved the Ovlov estates, just wamish I'd have bought one when I was looking at them not so long ago, more so Japanese import V70 Rs!
