Great thread, have enjoyed the read. Not far off a unicorn spec, especially in such great condition!
On the amber indicators - I like them and I think they really should stay on a pre-facelift car like yours. However, it's a shame that Porsche fudged the design (budget I guess) so that the bumper line doesn't flow through the light, which avoids the 'fried egg' issue.
See the Boxster concept where the light design first appeared:
Basically, i think you should experiment with a black line 'twixt amber and clear so that there is a continuous line.
It is something I was going to try if I had bought a 996. Probably won't work but...!

I've just been through the thread and I'm tempted to swap my E90 M3 for one of these. I've been after a 996 with an aero kit for a while and seeing your pictures makes me want one all the more
Funny you say that, I think I am at the point where I will be going into an E39 M5 (E90 M3 also on the cards, but less so).I keep thinking that I will keep a car for years, but the draw to try something else never fades
How long have you had the M3 and what are your top 3 likes and dislikes?
Going to try and find your thread now - if you have one!

I understand what you are saying and it was a consideration when I re-gingered my lights. But I still feel like it would look odd trying to change the design by trick of the eye - so I just replicated originality On the amber indicators - I like them and I think they really should stay on a pre-facelift car like yours. Me too, there's always another car to try! I keep thinking that I will keep a car for years, but the draw to try something else never fades

I see you've found the thread on my car I've owned it coming up two years now. Top likes are the induction noise and how it feels on the road. The noise makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it just sounds so angry! I dropped to fourth on the motorway the other day for a little bit of acceleration and induction noise and the car goes from sounding pretty normal at motorway speeds to unleashing all hell I also like that it's not perfect - when cold the gearbox is a tad clunky and the whole car feels like it's telling you it needs time to wake up, then once you're up to temperature it's wonderful.
Top dislikes are the tax band, but if you pay up front for the year it's under £50 a month so it's just a bit extra on top of a 'normal' car that I pay for my hobby, and the only other dislike is the range. It can drink fuel if you're gunning it a lot, but driven normally it's not too bad. I've just filled the tank with approx 30 miles left and I've done about 290 miles, which the car reckons is almost 26mpg. Pretty impressive for 400+ bhp and a 4L V8 really.
You know, we could always meet up and and drive each others cars for a bit...

Yes, I found it! I have been enjoying your attention to detail when repairing and replacing parts.I see you've found the thread on my car I've owned it coming up two years now. The tax is annoying, but it is what it is. My main reason for choosing the e39 over e90 is for classic insurance. Cars over 20 years old get 6 track days included with classic line. When cars are worth circa 20k, I'm not prepared to add £200 worth of insurance to each track day, nor am I prepared to drive without insurance.
As a package though, I find the e90 difficult to ignore.
Where in the south east are you? I should be visiting a friend (with the NSX) next month, he is not far from Ely. So we could plan to try out the cars then?

Cheers! Yes the E39 has a monster of an engine too. I've driven a 540 sport but not an M5 and I'd love to compare to my E90. Good point about the track day insurance. I've not taken my car on track but I definitely would like to sometime. The tax is annoying, but it is what it is. My main reason for choosing the e39 over e90 is for classic insurance. I'm in Kent, but happy to go for a drive to meet up. One of my friends is just about to move near-ish to there too.
I haven’t been on here in a while and I only have a minor update. Picked up a few parts from Porsche the other week and they are waiting patiently for me to fit them.
Have all fresh side skirt rails, screws and clips as the screws have rusted and I want to remove, clean and refit the skirts with new hardware. I also have a new expansion tank and my gearbox neutral spring, cap and circlip to resolve the lazy recentering gear stick.
A mate of mine has just been on another trackday and it made me realise that I want to get out in the 996 again at least 1 more time. I haven’t driven it since Cadwell!

Yes, I called Luke and agreed the sale. FGP have since prepped the car to remove the minor issues (and strangely found some issues that I swear didn't exist). I have to say, it wasn't pleasant watching it drive away from my home. Glad to see that Luke agrees mine is one of the best cars he has seen!

I had the pleasure of meeting with the new owner of the car in December. He is chuffed with it (as expected!) and plans to use it regularly in the dry months.
I have now bought an E12 M535i and plan to keep a long standing thread on here with that car update - I am sure some of you in the classic BMW world will know which car I mean...

Indeed. It's going straight into storage for a few weeks until I have sold my E12 520/6 and E23 728 to make some space. It's no bad thing, considering the roads are awfully salty! An E12 M535i has a spot in my dream garage, so hoping you start a thread for your time with the car so I have something through which to live vicariously..!
