Episode 51 is ready. In this one I relocate the ECU into the glove box and get all the front end hardware built on, radiator, fan, intercooler and drop some coolant in. Also attempt to run up and do a systems and leak check.

Now everything is running and it seems happy I've booked mapping in. Well I say happy, clearly not enough fuel during throttle tips ins and it hunts a bit when over 75Deg but it idles and that's all I needed right now. No leaks and it'll be ok for the mappers to get started.

I'm using Northampton Motorsport for this. I chose those guys for a number of reasons.
1. They're localish (40mins away) which means getting the car over wont ruin me and I can provide support quite quickly. I'll trailer it over as it'll have no tax, MOT or insurance and probably wont until Spring.
2. They've mapped plenty of French tat like mine before, always a good sign that they know these things well.
3. They are very familiar with Emerald K6+ (a major factor in the decision towards ECU choice, In my opinion Id prefer to use the ECU of their preference rather than that latest unit with all the bells and whistles that they haven't seen before. Lets remember it's only a little TU with minimal electronics.

Car is booked in for 3 days. In which they'll start with taking delivery of the car and doing a wheel alignment as it's currently miles off. Think cross-eyed and you've got an idea! Plus a quick sanity check I'm assuming.
Second day will be to get the car idling and driving happily and do the running in mileage on the dyno followed by an oil and filter change which I'll supply with the car.
Third day will be the full mapping session. Three maps via dash switch, high, medium and low.

If I had to put some numbers on the table I have two routes here:

I'd like the low map to be around 250bhp, mid map to be as high as possible with a torque cap at 300lbft (gbox limit). The final high map will be whatever it can do. Injectors and Turbo are good for 450bhp.

OR

250, 300, 350. I'll decide once we've got some numbers down on paper from the dyno. Im leaning towards a mixture of both right now!

bearing in mind that northampton motorsport have one of the happiest rolling roads in the world, I think 450 is going to be your start point hehe

Some pub figures would be good to have! In reality, the figures are for the car park meet ups

"how much power does it make mate?"..."well on the dyno it did eleventy hundred and 1"

I'll take any numbers with a pinch of salt to be honest, I doubt i'll be thinking of them as I try my best to handle the torque steer attempting to pop me into the closest A45 hedge row.

Years ago my VTS turbo AX made nigh on 300bhp (or thereabouts, vagaries of rolling road figures as always) and yours is a much better and more comprehensive build so you should see something pretty impressive I'd say

The big day has been and gone. Episode 54 is live and ready:

So for those who won't watch the episode there were issues stopping a few things. Both N'ton MS and I agree there is more in it. Fairly sure we can get closer to 300lbft trq and over 350bhp. Probably closer to 400.

We weren't able to tune more due to a faulty wastegate. I suspect its stuck closed. A few minor leaks (nothing serious).

I'm now on a course to "first road drive". Safe to say that I'll see what 333 feels like and go from there. More than likely that it's more than enough. Its very easy to get into a pub figures chasing scenario. At the start I set out saying 300would be ideal so we've already exceeded that.

Plenty of work to do now but mega excited for a road drive.

Episode 56 is live. This one is all about modifying the bodywork for the respray. Function over form for sure. Cooling being the main driver for multiple vents. Most of the removable parts are now with the bodyshop. Pretty much the final hurdle to overcome before MOT.

Hello all, it's been a little while since I've done any form of update. Multiple reasons behind that, house move now on the cards, started a new job and the whole family wiped out for 10 days with a sickness bug. All recovered, feet under the table and solicitors given the green light we can get back to the car.

Things have been moving along with the car in the background, albeit slowly. I'm in the middle of filming the next YT episode which will focus on two things...body shop full respray, which is progressing nicely, and the build of a full length legal exhaust system. As the next episode will be a long one and I'm at the mercy of the body shop some pictures will have to keep your Saxo needs at bay for a little while longer;

Firstly, current state of play with the exhaust;



Demountable cat with replacement straight pipe. I did this because unlike what seems like the entire car community, I don't have a friendly MOT guy so i'll need to be legal once a year. Wasn't super expensive and being on V band will make swaps easy.



My welds are also improving. TIG time can be measured on one hand in hours. Feeling more comfortable, probably need to try a little more current and move faster.



I'm still very much hampered by the merge collector/turbo position and the alternator location. The aim here is to still have a 3" system, wastegate into the downpipe, de-mountable 200cell sports cat, twin silencer system to a single tail pipe at the rear. For those wondering why I didn't do this first time round...cost and time.

To get the car to the dyno and driving, which enabled a lot of other work, it was quick to make a short system and only cost about £120 in materials. Plus I can always chuck that on for shows etc. The full system is taking lots of time and will probably be around £700 plus gas costs to finish. Multiple V bands sports cat, 2 silencers, pie cuts, straight sections....it all adds up. Would I do it this way all over again? probably not. Do i regret it doing it this way? No.

That work has stalled as the car is at the bodyshop and I need it to get the bends right.

Onto the body work. I'm using Perfect Finish bodyshop in Coventry. I know the owner/manager there. Through a friend of a friend and it's worked out really well. It's properly expensive but the finish will be excellent and way better than it ever came out the factory. Some sample shots here:

Weirdly, when it came off the truck it was only firing on 3 so i'll have to investigate that when it comes back in a couple of weeks. Started on 4 then dropped to 3.
The car was actually the last thing to go over. in the past couple of weeks I've stripped the car back and gave the body shop a head start on all removable items. Bumpers, bonnet, wings, doors, boot, arches, trims, mirrors etc. Last thing to do be done will be the car itself. I'll then re-assemble myself. Some more body shop progress:

Saxo trims are painted and have a black plastic textured finish. I'm going to keep the textured finish. I actually quite like it. It does however, ramp the cost up a bit. I have loads of prep photo's which im sure are pretty dull to look at so i'll just leave some shots of the bits Ive had back from the bodyshop here....

Really frustrating having all this stuff sat waiting to go on but it'll be a good few days putting it back together. Just need to not damage it in the process.

Hello all, exciting update. Car is nearly done at the body shop.

The guys at perfect finish in Coventry are amazing. If I asked you what type of guy you'd want working on your car you'd say "someone who knows what they're doing and has been doing it a long time". Well, the chap at PF has been spraying cars for 49 years, retires next year and has unbelievable motivation and a thoroughly nice guy too!

They've kept me up to date all the way and I asked to be there for when the paint when on so I could stick a Go Pro in the corner. I was very particular in that I didn't want overspray on the engine or underneath the car, so they took all this onboard and kept the car sealed to the floor during spraying. The paint looks amazing and I'm about a week away from getting the car back home to put it back together.
