How did it go?

I finally sorted something that had been bothering me for a while now - the bonnet grills. A previous owner had removed the 'strakes' and painted them black. Annoyingly they properly botched the job, and not only was the paint flaking off (and of course the wrong colour), but removing the strakes they broke loads of the fixings - so they were stuck on with blobs of glue.

Irritatingly these are R171 SLK55 unique parts so impossible to find. I eventually found some in Hong Kong. They were not cheap, postage was not cheap, and customs added more on top. But as one of the strakes had flown away at high speed a few weeks ago they were really annoying me!

Beforehand - with the missing strake, and my botch on a botch respray of the strakes silver.

And done. Annoyance gone.

Excellent thread, I've just read it this morning. Very nice car and I like what you are doing with it. My Dad at the ripe age of 83 has just bought one a few weeks ago, and is very much enjoying it. 😉

Ah, that might be why there's a bit of left/right squirm under hard acceleration!

Bill incoming. It has been an expensive month.

I bought an X pipe from ebay and we removed the secondary cats and the resonator box. I had it cut out as one piece. If ever I come to sell it a future owner could put it back to standard. Though I am sure no one would. I have just got the inlet mods to do now for a bit better breathing. That suspension damage you pictured. Is it a broken bolt or the arm itself?

It's the suspension arm bushes, everything else is dirty/mild surface corrosion. I'm up North so I've told MB Automotive not to rush if they have other stuff to do. Always dangerous.

Very good value - shame they aren't local to me biggrin

I had to have a coil spring replaced on the front and with the genuine merc part and labour I was one third of that total

PS was happy to pay that - coil springs esp merc ones scare the bejesus out of me biggrin

I bet the springs are AMG specific ones then!

My W124 front springs were £89 each delivered.

That's what I did with the front air springs on the E500. Didn't feel right, but felt sensible.

Car back after clonking noise detected. My Dad drove it out of the garage as I was in the W124 - these cars sound fantastic from the outside. Cheap parts wise... this time.

It is driving better than at any point since when I purchased it. Unfortunately I could only fill it with petrol and give it a brief spank today before putting it to bed.

Things to do up North, see W124 thread for how it's much cheaper to go SLK55 AMG https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
