Air Oil Separator and Power steering return line have been purchased. Got to say £106 for a small metal pipe does a good job at demonstrating the porsche tax.

All being well the car should be back together tonight/tomorrow

So it all went back together. Started it up and was getting misfires on cylinder 1,2,4 and 5. Very odd - couldn't work out why.

Life got busy with work etc so the car sat for over a week like this. Came t start it up yesterday and it ran perfectly fine - and did about 150 miles yesterday flawlessly.

I'm thinking a little bit of power steering oil spilt on the crank position sensor which caused the misfires, and then its dried out and is now fine?

Very odd but just happy the car is working again.

Do you have the latest copy of your spreadsheet? I'm thinking of getting one of these and I'm trying to work out what the possible big maintenance costs are! I know you've put tyres and exhaust under maintenance so they are obviously two big things, but the breakdowns are appreciated!

Thanks for the fantastic input. They were £800 each, making up £1600 out of the £3800 figure in the lastest (that I can see) update. So I'd say they were a pretty big factor, but hey.

They are standard consumable items tough. You need tyres on any car, all the time. Prices for 19" Michelin PS4 are higher than your average rubber, but if you have 18" and go for a slightly less top of the line, but still very good tyre, shoes for a 997 become pretty reasonable.

Regarding the exhaust, it depends if you opt for a new one because you want more power, or because your old one is worn out. In the first case, this is not maintenance as such, but rather a modification. Prices are in the line with other performance exhausts. If it only need replacing due to be faulty, a good working used standard exhaust is way cheaper. Alternatively it can be repaired.

As I said, both these things are pretty standard stuff and not what is considered "big things" in the grand scheme of what a Porsche 997 might throw at you. I don't want to discourage you from getting a 997, they are fantastic cars (I do have one myself, here is my readers car thread ), and while I'm the first to jump in any car adventure blindly, your comment of tyres and exhaust being big things made me think you might want to reconsider potential running costs on an at least 15 y.o. (997.1) Porsche 911.

ETA: because I saw your comment on an other thread regarding the 996 being the worst 911, you do realize the 997 is essentially only a facelift of the 996, right? Many part numbers for the 997 are the same and continue to have a 996 prefix number. Round headlamps and an other dashboard arhe the biggest aesthetic differences. The 996 is a bit lighter on its feet and feels a bit more raw, but it always depends on what 996 you compare to what 997. They are not worlds apart, being essentially the same car.

If one overcomes the design of the headlamps (the 996.1 headlamps are infact a very good design in their own rights, imho) an early 996 is a tremendous first Porsche 911. If you are interested, there is a great thread about them here.

I think we've got crossed wires here, sorry for the hostility before smile When I said "big things", what I meant was, they are a big chunk of the cash spent and they are things that are required on any older car, so I'm not too concerned about themsmile I think we're actually kind of agreeing that they are not the things to be looking at. I'm already having to budget for 19" PS4Ss on my daily. I'm more concerned about the things that a 997 specifically might throw up, and that's why I was after an updated breakdown.

Car is on Prom duties this week. For a 15 year old car it doesn't half clean up well and look the part.

However I have noticed since changing the power steering pump my whining noise is still present. Car drives fine but just whines - if i remove the drivebelt the noise goes so its something driven by the belt. Noise still seems to be coming from the power steering pump despite a new one being fitted, there doesnt seem to be any air in the system either so I'm at a bit of a loss to what it is. Any ideas are welcome .
It will probably get booked into the specialist that did my clutch to diagnose and sort the whining as I'm over it now, iv spent enough time trying to sort it now and I just want it fixed.

Ignoring the whining power steering pump the car is running great and getting its fair share of use. Its not been on daily duties for the last month and wont be till summers over due to having use of a company car at the moment.

However I have been making sure to use the car at weekends. Its mainly been used to travel to the lake district or wales to go paddle boarding

Iv also installed the Thule bike carrier again so I can bring my bike to the lakes etc at weekend too. No pics of the bike on yet but i have been getting some funny looks with roofbars and a bike carrier on a 911

They're looks of admiration, I'm sure. 911s look so good with roof bars - just serves to highlight their versatility and driveability

My first thought was 'Ooooh how much wind noise??' paperbag Does it add to the 911-din of wind and tyre roar at motorway speeds much OP?

The bars don't add any wind noise that I can perceive- the bike rack does though and when there's a bike on it its really really loud

Small milestone hit today.

Weather permitting im heading to the lake District early Saturday with a friend who is a photographer. Hoping for some nice shots and some drone footage too.

I also have a cosmetic mod coming that I'm excited about, nothing extravagant but hoping it makes the exterior of the car a little more personalized
