Re: Stem Seals.

The garage my daughter bought her car from is a MINI specialist.

They have a tool they have developed that enables them to replace the stem seals in situ w/o having to remove the cylinder head.

About 2hrs labour plus parts when I spoke to them when she bought the car.

I don’t see where you are located but they’re near Lancaster?

Cheshire I am based, thanks for this though - really something I am not willing to fund tbh

This car looks great on the steels with the roof bars, here’s hoping the smoke is not enough for MOT fail.

I’m sure I saw another one (might have been in the high mileage thread) which was on 200k ish miles and had been driving with the stem seal problem for years before the MOT tester called time on it.

biggrin it does have an aire of utilitarianism about it.

Yeah I am not too fussed really, It goes really well for what it is. Keep sticking fuel in it, and topping up the oil, its a good'n.

Its pretty astonishingly good on fuel also, which is nice in this very expensive time we are living in at the moment with everything, its getting me about very cheaply, and claiming work mileage is a bonus too wink

If it passes in the next 5 months...it's MOT, great! If it doesn't, I can easily change swap it for something.

I am choosing to drive a cheap sheddy thing out of choice, not necessity - because I cant be arsed with a needy expensive piece of metal depreciating on the drive anymore.

Bit of gravel driving, love this dry dust, like a magnet to the back of the MINI's!

So, with a heavy heart I've bought a new car, this MINI has been great, it really has, but as time has gone on, it's just not fitting in with my life.

Work, I needed a bigger car for hauling my gear, the MINI couldn't do it.

Family, yes you can squeeze a pram and a human in there, and we did a few times, but why should I if I don't need too, we needed a viable 2nd family car for various duties.

So, £1000 and 10 miles search radius, the bangernomics/shed way, not zoning in on anything in particular this came up as a cheap p/x...

2008 / 1.8 VVTI Vectra SRI

Not gone diesel, tax a little higher but less risk I feel with diesel ancillaries...loads of history, X4 brand new Bridgestones, few car park kisses, so shed attitude can continue.

Drives really well, SRI spec isn't too bad, A/C and Cruise, all I care about tbh, both of which I missed from the MINI

So, it's again with a heavy heart the MINI is going, but I've helped along in its journey I feel, but logistically it's wasn't right for me and my family.

The Vectra looks very smart in that photo.

Wonder if you’ll actually put the Mini up for sale, wonder if it would be good for track days wink

A shame the Mini has to go, but the Vectra makes more sense as a family car - and hopefully means another great thread to read!

I'm not sure your Mini would be too great as a track car, being a 1.4!

Vectra looks really good. These are pretty reliable as well.

Engine is a bit underwhelming, but should be decent on fuel.

Yeah it's not perfect, has a few scrapes and a repair on rear, but it is what it is, has service history and 1 owner from new, so seems ok.

Did a pretty good test drive and all seems fine tbh, it is underwhelming but it's nice to be back in a more substantial car from the MINI, MINI is a hoot to drive but gets very very tiresome on the motorway, especially trying to join them!!

See how I go, they do seem to get good reliability these 1.8 VVT's than the diesel ones, but who knows, with fuel cost the way it is, and unleaded substantially cheaper still, probably not alot in it now.

My wife's 318d, £20 doesn't seem to go very far any more!

Yup, it does make more sense, could of kept the MINI, and struggled on, but didn't see the point when I didn't have too.

I completely overlooked the Vectra and I always seem to do on many cars when I look about, think it's only natural, but just played the "see what's about game, for my budget and needs" and you seem to pick up cars you would never think of.

1 owner Vectra from a trader at a grand? Sounds like a bargain, Vectra thread?

Where’s the MINI going? P/X?

I had a Astra H from the same era with the 1.8 engine but it had 125hp rather than the later 140hp. You wont win any drag races, but fine on the motorway and I never had an issue with mine in the few years I owned it.

Shame the Mini has gone, they are annoyingly good cars. So is the Vectra to be fair. I had a pre-facelift in SXi trim. It had AC and Cruise too, as well as the obligatory crank seal oil leak that Vauxhalls seem to come with as standard. It wasn't a fast car by any stretch of the imagination but it never once let me down (Except when I blew it up by fiddling..) and even managed about 40mpg for me. I've always said that if I ever need "a car" and I'm on the bones of my arse, I'd look for a Vectra. It does everything you need pretty well for next to no money.

Autotrader, 10 miles search radius, yeah 1 lady owner from new! MINI will probably go to WBAC given me a good price, and cannot be arsed with idiots selling private, been there done that, and my time is precious.

biggrin well, I am not on the bones of my arse and just needed a big, safe, modern, cheap car - and not diesel, had an Avensis in the past, was good but too grandad image for me, Accord also was on my list, but was going even older in years, so this was a surprisingly interesting find - wasnt even looking at Vectras (for many forum and review reasons) but seems they get a bad rap for just being a Vectra.

Had a SAAB 9-3, two years ago, and this seems better built in comparison.

I always found petrol Vauxhall's to be thirsty buggers. Had an astra 1.8 coupe and thought it had a fuel leak
