Poss the gunk they use to fit the tyres. Straight from the shop and then onto the car in that pic. Not even been driven on.
I wasn’t suggesting you’d chipped it, rather I was more concerned the fitter had chipped it whilst fitting the tyre Don't worry
My guy is quite good but not perfect. Some of the gold looks a bit more silver in places. Next up is stripping down the split rims to get them refurbed. My guy refused to even attempt this because he suspects lots of snapped bolts. So I will have to split them myself if I want them doing.

Seeing as you own both a 986 & 996, could you please give your comparison between the models? I am also assuming running costs will be very similar?
I think if you buy well then running costs are very similar. My 986 probably needs some money throwing at it for stuff like suspension arms and bushes and what not if it is all original.I think the 3.2 feels a bit lacking power wise when you are used to quicker cars. Most noticeable when trying to pass someone in 3rd gear, country lane looking for a suitable gap.
My earlier 996 needed a replacement gearbox so I bought one used. I paid over 2500 just for the box. Porsche want 10500 plus VAT or something ludicrous. So for stuff like 2nd hand engines and gearboxes the 986 will win hands down. Parts from 911 cars will always carry a premium as the 986 is still a very common car comparatively. I spoke to a guy selling a 3.4 996 which needed an engine rebuild. His engine builder rejected his crank as being outside of tolerance. And rejected another crank bought used. So he told me good 3.4 used cranks seem impossible to find and Porsche charge 3500 for a new one.
I try to do lots of servicing myself because it is enjoyable when it goes to plan and costs much less that way.

I can support the comment about worn crank shafts for 3.4 996s....when my car had a full rebuild in early 2019, my crankshaft was also identified as being incapable of re-use & back then they were in short supply as used items.I think the 3.2 feels a bit lacking power wise when you are used to quicker cars. Most noticeable when trying to pass someone in 3rd gear, country lane looking for a suitable gap.
