I said I was going to leave the engine alone and see how far we get with it as it had all the signs of being a strong lump. Good compression, good condition bores, strong but dyno performance and as had been proven, these magnificent S62's can do big mileage, like 300-400k without being opened up for major surgery so why the pic of the rod bearings above.....?

Yes I have sold it!

Part of the deal was for the new owners peace of mind that they were replaced and despite them not being too bad for 178k miles, they are done now so no need to worry about them.

Why have I sold it such a short time after completion? Well incase you haven't seen it, 003 came along and is going to need significant expenditure to bring it up to a standard it deserves.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Chris aka CB 987 missed out on the first one I built so early on I promised him first dibs on this one so a deal was agreed and Chris collected this morning. A week ago I was driving down in the M5T to the bodyshop to strip a load of parts off 003 and I was thinking "what on earth am I doing" but I stick to my word and 003 needed to be saved.

I could always build another M5T...... but I doubt I will! I have wanted to build an S62 E46 for a long time so maybe that will happen at some point.

I think Chris will be continuing this thread with any updates and I did get invited to take it to the PH 25th Anniversary meet/show in August which Chris will now do. I'll be there and park 003 in the visitors car park if its ready!

It's been a fun and enjoyable build

Well done Barry. Ask PH if you can display 003, you should be good to do so!

Jammy sod biggrin

Great end to a fantastic car build Barry... I'm sure it'll be on here soon enough under its own thread

Thanks again Barry for giving me the opportunity to purchase it, the build really is a credit to you. It’s a car which ticks pretty much every box for me!

I’ll be bringing the car to the PH 25th anniversary, and it will be on display so everyone can have a good nose.

I’ve got no real plans other than putting some miles on it over the summer and enjoying it. There are a few minor bits of exterior trim to tidy up, but I’m just being picky.

I’ve ordered a set of reproduction BMW dealer plates from Nick @retroplates, just to finish it off. Hopefully it won’t need anything other than a service and MOT next year with Barry.

I’m going to try and get to a few events this year with it and I’ll keep the thread up to date.

Cheers all.

Anyone else expecting an E39 M5 Touring build #3 thread in the future? wink

I popped in to see Barry yesterday, as it happens just before the handover - I have to say the M5T looked stunning.

I’m sure that 003 will consume sufficient time until the itch or a customer returns to beg for another E39 M5 Touring.

Pretty sure you could make a full time business out of making them should you wish, there is definitely a market for them smile

Absolutely, no problem, just drop me a message and we can sort it out.

I’ve also signed up for the Sunday Service at BMW HQ in early July.

Cheers.

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t checked in for a while! Congratulations Barry, the car turned out beautifully and I’m so pleased that the internals can live on.

Chris, as the last person to own and daily drive that engine, I can promise you’ll really enjoy it!

I’d love to keep an eye on the progress and I really hope to see this thing at some events. It would be great to come and say hello. Are you coming to Bicester Heritage this weekend?

I’m planning to go to the PH 25th anniversary at Bicester in August. If all goes to plan I should also be at the Sunday Service at BMW HQ in early July. I’m also going to try and get to Caffeine & Machine a bit over the summer.

Hopefully you can see it at some point.

Cheers.

I also enjoy the build more than the end result sometimes, but never executed to that degree. A good read about a fine creation, thanks for the entertainment and hope the new owner uses it.

I also love that people ignore bmw in your user name and give you nerdy factoids about E39s despite you clearly being an afficionado. All these little 1 ups are as entertaining as the thread was.

I’ll definitely be using it, I’ve got 3 young children, so it’s the perfect practical weekend car for me, with a V8 and manual box! I tried a 911 previously and hardly used it. I’ll probably use it sparingly over the winter months, Barry put so much effort into sorting the underside out I want to keep it nice.

Cheers.

I can't resist one upping you here -- Barry is a little more than an aficionado, as a BMW tech and owning a BMW indy garage*. smile

Congratulations Chris; that’s a very very cool car that you’ve bought. Will this be a daily or just a toy?

My 335i will be in the readers cars display at PH25, so it’ll be great to see this in the flesh.

Cheers, I would love to daily it, it’s a 3rd car to replace my E46 B3S touring. I’ll use it over the spring/summer and early autumn and then it’ll go away when the salt starts to be spread.

Be great to catch up in August.

Cheers.

That sound a good plan Chris

You know full well how these can rust if they're not treated and looked after wink Which we all know this one will be biggrin

I regret selling my Japanese import E39 touring; it was such a good car. But I know I sold it at the right time to get the best £££ for it...

If we needed another touring and I had the driveway space; I'd absolutely import another (lesser engined) and then get Barry to wave his wand over it biggrin
