Fitted a towbar today. Didn't get many pictures as just wanted to get it done.

Went for an ORIS removable jobbie mainly as for the 99%of the time I use the car it won't be seen and the ORIS one doesn't require any bumper cuts at all, most of the others do.

Scary dismantling a 2 month old car, even a cheap one.



Happy to see the underseal job I did must have got somewhere



In place without the Swan neck.



And fitted with a BUZZ rack, which seems like a great bit of kit for the price. Load limit of 75kg matches the nose weight of the towbar.



Having not fitted 13 pin electrics before I wasn't exactly sure what these two wires we for. Power to the caravan battery I presume, one permanent, one switched?



Left them off for the time being as I don't own a caravan anyway. The rest of the loom was plug and play and not too difficult although picture only instructions aren't always as helpful as they could be.

Looking good OP.

On mine i noticed some rust on the spare wheel bracket so sanded it and gave it a tickle with some hammerite.

I saw you used the bilt hamber waxoil stuff, if i spray the rear beam axle and arches how many cans do you think it will take ? i have never used the stuff before and don't know what the coverage is like.

The only thing I'd change on that are the alloys. Diamond cut seems wrong on that kind of car. But it's not my car.

A good attitude to take overall with the ownership, even if it ages poorly. I have found most main dealer experiences to be poor.

I hadn't even thought of looking on here, but I'm another newbie to the Duster owners, er, club.

I've usually managed to stick to my rule of never spending much more than a grand (Legacy Spec B excepted), but after a disaster with an M59 Partner BSI and a failed and stuck injector in a Renault Trafic whilst 1200 miles from home I've flipped the maths on it's head and am going for the same approach as you with a new car to keep. I went for the middle spec, but the 1.5dci and 4x4. I managed to pick up a cancelled order and was driving home in it 10 days after starting the discussion of "what if we bought a new car instead". Luckily the cancelled order was exactly what I would have ordered, right down to the spare wheel and stupid colour.



Living in the North Pennines we get a fair amount of snow and salt in the winter, as well as flooding and a need* to use the more interesting routes.

As I've got three sprogs in the back I've also opted for the full complement of rubber mats.

Time will tell.

Plan is to get the rustproofing done before the first gritting, but I'll be following your progress here!

1 can will be enough. 2 will do the whole underside and arches no problem.

Entirely agree. There's literally no other option with the higher spec models.

I'll be getting a set of steels for winter with some appropriate rubber.

Just back from a camping weekend in Wales (weather was suitably terrible for June in the UK).

Just under 500 miles all in. Missed the air suspension of the Touareg with 50+kg of tent hanging off the towbar but other than adjusting the dipped beam down it handled it well. 39mpg average with 2 adults, 2 kids, a German Shepherd and probably another 200kg of kit including the tow bar rack and roof box.

I know you are worried about rust but taking the Carcoon on holiday is a bit extreme. Each to their own.

We pick our Duster up tomorrow evening. It will make for a refreshing change to drive a car that doesn’t need half an hour to warm up enough that the gearbox works, and does slightly more than 12mpg.

We’d ordered a Jogger but that wasn’t to going to arriving any time soon so we changed plans and luckily there had been a cancelled order so could pick it up quickly.

Ours is the 1.0 TCE Bi-fuel, and we have had ordered rubber mats, boot liner, and mudflaps. I quick like the idea of replacing the alloys with the base model steel wheels.

Only issue is trying to find LPG locally - the one supplier who was good is out, and the other nearest one is at a garage that Cooter from Dukes Of Hazzard would deem too slovenly.

I think everyone does! I can imagine the steel wheels being 'in demand' like 205 dturbo steels or 106 rallye steels..

This seems to be a common issue in the UK. Wasn't much of a consideration for us as we use the tunnel every year and wanted 4x4.

Sainsbury is the only LPG retailer that is close to me and they don't allow adaptors which the Dacia requires. I only do 5000 miles a year and I don't see much point in driving miles away to try and find another LPG retailer.

Plus I wanted a spare wheel and I didn't want the hassle of the system potentially going wrong at a later date.

For those hunting LPG, try the MyLPG.eu app. I have actually been surprised by availability in my area. If you do use that app, be sure to update it so others benefit.

Thats great , thanks for the info.

My Duster is 3 years old and i just wanted to fend off the rust for a few years.

I have used BH Atom-Mac on my brakes / hubs etcetc after every wash for the last few years, quick spray immediately after washing and kept all looking factory fresh
I've been using BH Atom-Mac for a few washes now after your recommendation.

You dilute it down to a maximum of 5% so it just feels like you're spraying water on a clean car.

Seems to work though, I give the whole wheel well area a quick spray.

It was wet when we took it down. Had to set it up in my garden, which isn't much bigger than the tent!

You're lucky to get an LPG model, they've stopped making them indefinitely at the moment.

It is worth using cerakote trim wipes (or similar) on the plastic trim too. It'll keep it from fading long term.

Finally got round to tidying up the drums, or atleast a bit of preventative maintenance down the line.

The wheel bolts were on little more than finger tight, 20Nm at most. I could literally undo them with one finger on an 18in breaker bar. Checked the fronts and they weren't quite so bad, maybe 40Nm.

How they initially looked



Quick wire brush and scotch brite.



Primed



And painted. Time will tell if standard Halfords black will cope with the heat.
