I’m not sure if you’ve seen this thread (or if you’d find it interesting) -

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1...

This guy does a near forensic level examination of the m3 suspension compared to non m3 stuff.

I thought the fact bmw incorporated the twist of rubber bush to add rear weight under braking without actually adding weight very interesting (but then again I’m a bit of a saddo).
Cheers for that; I’ll have a read through. I can be a bit sad and enjoy stuff like that too. thumbup

Yesterday was wheel day….

First job was to pop to the tyre place to get a set of Good Year Asymmetric 5’s to my CSL’s. I’m running 235/35/19’s on the front and 255/30/19’s on the rear. The new wheels are half an inch wider both ends and the stock 225’s are the minimum that’d fir on the new wheels so would have looked a tad stretched hence going up to a 235.

Who said that coupes weren’t practical?

All four wheels with tyres fitted with a bit of jiggling.

Next up was to clean the tyre fitting paste off. The water was beading off beautifully off the wheels, do pretty impressed with the Gyeon ceramic coat so far.

All four cleaned and ready to be fitted. My gel badges were delivered shortly after.

This is how the stock 225M’s sat. Front:

Rear:

With the old wheels off, I cleaned out the wheel arches which were pretty grotty. The drive was an absolute stare afterwards, so that had to be cleaned before my other half got home! laugh

New wheels on, the rears are pretty pokey.

Fronts haven’t changed too much so might benefit from some small spacers to push them out a tad.

Rest of the car had a quick wash and then it was time for more photos, lots of photos! hehe

Looking good, Sam! Interested to see how they look on the E92. And sparkling graphite is a great colour- it should have a bit of pop and sparkle on a day like today?

Cheers Lee. A subtle 10/15mm drop will set it right off I reckon.

Ha ha, I’d love to but it’ll be a bit more budget; Eibachs on B4’s.

I already have the springs and front dampers. Just need to order the rears and runner mounting parts.

I’ve gone for this setup on my e91, but with the addition of shorter bump stops too.

Similar to yourself, my previous car was a 130i LE. The LE had pretty much the same B4s/Eibach Pro setup with BMWP bump stops, but the e91 feels much more compliant and less busy.

Don’t suppose you have the part numbers for the performance bump stops to hand do you?

My 130 had Birds B1 springs and dampers which were brilliant.

Fingers crossed on some injector issues then!

If you've got an OBD cable you could download the free MHD app and I'm pretty sure when you connect to your car it will say if it's an 80 or 81.

Otherwise pop open the e box and remove it and cross reference the part number against real OEM.

It may have been done already. Mine was but they swapped it for another 80!

It's possible to get a used 81 from ebay and you can have your ecu cloned across to it. The ecus seem to go for a couple of hundred and the cloning is a 150 ish maybe less.

I had a remapped 130i (evolve) a few years ago and it does make a tiny bit of difference but being NA the gains are subtle. With the N54 is is very different and support for the platform is massive.

I should have mentioned about the remapping that even if you stick with stock power you can still choose the 1M throttle mapping which makes a big difference to the throttle response and takes away some of the lazy feeling of the motor. You will have noticed it doesn't feel as snappy as the N52.

  • fair warning what follows is my understanding but the exact details go above my head so I'm doing my best to explain as I understand it!**
Fairly recently some Aussie guys figured out that there was an additional table in the ECU for a throttle delay that wasn't being addressed with the remapping at that time.

People had always commented that the 1M feels 'better' than the normal n54 cars in terms of throttle response.

Comparing the 1M table to the regular N54 cars it turned out that the N54 cars had a delay added in to the throttle inputs which the 1M didn't have.

Originally the guys down under managed to recode their ecus to the 1M settings but it was a difficult process and risked bricking your ecu.

Fast forward to the latest release of MHD and you can now use a slider to vary the 'delay' from stock to 1M.

I have mine set to 1M and it's much better, more responsive, easier to drive on the throttle and the power comes in more smoothly. My car has the stage 2 tune so it's more pronounced but even if you leave it at the stock power I'd definately try to do that as it makes the car nicer to drive more predictable and less lazy feeling.
That’s really interesting re the throttle response, because having been out in it today it does feel a tad lazy at times. My interest has definitely been piqued.
I think your plan of running it under a warranty for a while is a fine idea. Build some confidence in it!

The other thing that's worth keeping in good nick is the alternator / pas belt. It has been known for them to break and slip down the back of the crank pulley and get sucked into the front seal etc. There are kits to stop it but at having a decent belt is more important that usual.

On my e91 I have a combination of e36 M3 fronts, and Z4 rears. It’s a common setup in the US (There’s a few threads on e90post):

E36 M3 Front: 31.33.2.225.377
Z4 Rear: 33.53.6.770.350

The BMWP ones used on my 130i:

BMWP Front: 31331096099
BMWP Rear: 33536788905

Peachy, cheers for that.

I think I fitted Z4 ones to my other half’s 125i which has worked quite well.

Looks mint mate! How does it ride now not sitting on run flats anymore?

Thanks.

I’ve done 100 miles or so now and I think it’s an improvement. It feels lighter in the way it no longer thuds through imperfections in the road.

I’ve not driven it particularly hard yet, but I didn’t like the way the Bridgestone runflats felt. They never filled my with confidence after the PS4’s on my 130i.
