Thank you. Yes. The originals were way past their best and I like to Jensen Wheels which are a direct replacement (different nuts obvs) and I always thought the Coupe should have had different wheels to differentiate it further from the saloon.

I still have the original wheels in the loft but they're pricey to refurb
I have a set of 14" Wolfies to out on my estate P6 , but a 14" set of Rostyles would be perfect.
P6 tourer eh? You lucky man. Rare beasties. We used to attend the Scottish All Rover Rally every year for many years and there was a guy who had 2. One was restored while he used the other one and when the one he was using git ropey he'd swap over and get the other restored. They're lovely looking thigs especially in Almond.

I believe there are reproduction Ro-styles available. : https://www.martinrobey.com/part/15532

My phone has just popped up with an "On this day..." reminder that it is a year today since I went and viewed the Lord Nelson.

Not much happened with it recently except I have given it a second wash (TFR, snow foam, Hand wash) and it looks a little better (well it did until I went out in it on these horribly wet Welsh roads).

I tried taking it for a local garage (that did the ball joints and last MOT) to look at the suspension knock but for stupid reasons it didn't happen and I need to get it booked in again.

Still waiting for friend's Nanocom to come back from the manufacturer replaced or repaired so I can accurately diagnose and sort the intermittent SRS light and the HeVAC.

Friend came to visit in his 2017 supercharged RR Sport over the weekend. Although the interior is more modern and obviously it has more power it's clear the recipe hasn't changed and although the cars are almost 20 years apart, there's not much changed in terms of what goes into them to give that feel good factor.

The hunt continues for a sensible dogmobile for Mrs TT but she does very little mileage so reluctant to throw substantial money at it. Really we need to sell 3 cars and buy 1 (If she's just accept that autos are OK we could just use the bloody Lexus!). Oh well.

Mr Tyre Tread,
With all the skill and perseverance you’ve shown with the P38 over the last 12 months, it strikes me that you’d be able to tackle and succeed at a gearbox change. So how about keeping the Lexus but changing the gearbox to a manual for Mrs TT?
Thank you for the vote of confidence but it would be easier and cheaper to sell the auto and buy a manual but the manual is more expensive to tax and I like the Auto as it suits the Lexus.

Just a brief update. The Nanocom returned at long last and today, in between working on the house, I managed to resolve the SRS light issue so I can book it in for a MoT this week.

Haven't managed to resolve the HeVAC issue but that can wait and be the new owners challenge I think.

The shame is that the car is now running really well and I have been using it quite a bit. I did 2 X 50 mile round trips yesterday without a hiccup and was quite enjoying cruising up and down the A470 on cruise control at 60 watching the plebs go by. hehe

I picked a a huge rug and a stone bench and the old boy just swallowed them in the cavernous boot and completely ignored the weight.

Oh well.

Thats a real shame that you're moving it on TT, but I can completely understand after everything it has put you through. Are you sure you won't have a change of heart again?

Michael
Can't justify it if SWMBO can't drive it. So someone will get a reasonably well sorted P38 that goes, stops, rises and falls and turns as it should. Will just need some cosmetics and things like the aircon sorting

It failed frown

But only on the missing rear centre lap belt (which was missing last year when it passed at the same MoT station).

The plastic housing that the buckle pushes into is in place but no webbing or buckle and I can't understand what is missing or how it locates. Can anyone show me a pic of what I'm missing please?

ETA: I believe I've found a pic of the part I'm missing (buckle one end and bolt in place loop the other) but can't see where it bolts to. If anyone has a pic I would be grateful.

On further investigation I've found "The 'ole" and now just need a lap strap and bolt.

(In Case anyone is still watching) Having obtained a seat belt centre strap from We R P38's and fitted it I took the car back to the MoT station and he passed it (without even checking it).

I'm not happy with his advisories TBH as there is not a layer of heavy underseal, it's not generally corroded, the front bumper mounts have surface corrosion, the exhaust mount is modified, not defective, the rear brake pipes were replaced last year and covered in underseal to protect them, there is sweet FA play in the steering (bloody good for a steering box IMO) and show me a RR without an oil leak.

Oh well, it's going up for sale now so if anyone is interested, now I've sorted most of the issues and it's running well, please give me a shout.

My MOT last year made no mention of the repaired chip in the windscreen.
This year it’s an advisory.
Same tester.

Lore unto themselves.
I can forgive a missed repaired chip in a windscreen but a seatbelt? (even if it is only a lapbelt).

The Lord Nelson has had a thorough clean inside and out and been advertised for sale and I've had some interest.

Today SWMBO had an extra day off and, as we'd been busy over the BH weekend (well I had fixing other friends' cars) I suggested we take the RR out for a last hurrah for fish and chips at the coast. Off we set with GSD to investigate Porthcawl (It's a dump!).

We got about 40 mins from home on the M4 when I got and "EAS Error" Message and "Drive below 35mp". Bearing in mind we were on the Motorway that wasn't going to happen so we pressed on to the next exit where we turned off and headed home via a non motorway route just in case the Lord Nelson decided Not to proceed. We made it home with the suspension still up (but feeling quite hard) and swapped into the Lexus to enjoy our day out (Later in the day the Lexus threw a code too but it's an intermittent O2 sensor that just needs a reset with the OBD2 reader).

After a late lunch at Monknash we headed home and I plugged my friend's Nanocom into the RR. It came up with "Unknown Error" on the Air suspension. I cleared the code and no further errors came up but the air suspension wouldn't rise or fall and just showed the flashing lights on the selector as if it was trying to achive the ride height slected but just kept on flashing.

I got the Nanocom to open the front valves which didn't change the height the opened the rear valves which then lowered the rear a little and it looked like it was on bump stops. Then tried to raise it. The pump runs and the dash selector light flashes but there's no movement.

At this point I figured there's an issue with the pump so I popped the bonnet and removed the air intake filter for the air pump and stuck my finger over the hole. Very little suction. I therefore conclude that the air pump needs (another) rebuild so have ordered the seals from XR8 which should be here on Friday.

Ho hum!

Seals arrived today. Bloody wildlife!

Aaaaanyway, after much gardening (more slash and burn that gardening) and exposing (then quickly covering up) a Robin's nest and a Blackbird nest, both with chicks in them, I abandoned gardening and turned to The Lord Nelson.

I removed the compressor and took the cylinder off to find:

...the bore is scored. No idea how as there's no evidence of debris.

Of course, I didn't order a replacement cylinder but remembered I had one from when I last rebuilt the compressor and had put it "somewhere". Not in any of the expected places but eventually I found it.

I'd thought it was easy to replace the piston seal and end seals but my memory is playing tricks so I'll need to watch the video again. Fiddly getting the brushes back in iirc.

Sorry for the lack of update.

BIG NEWS!

I had rebuilt the air pump and refitted it but had not tested it properly due to time constraints.

I was watching the Grand Prix yesterday when someone came knocking on the front door. I was about to tell them to sod off when he started asking me about the Lord Nelson and asking if it was for sale. He's seen it advertised online and recognised the location as he only lives about 1/4 mile down the road.

I showed him around it, took him for a drive. Told him all about it and explained that it's still a work in progress.

Turns out he has several Land Rovers and understands the challenges of LR ownership.

So we agreed on a price yesterday evening (Covers my costs and a very small amount for my time (probably a rate of about 10p per hour) and he came and collected it this afternoon.

A lovely chap. I took him to show him how to fill the gas and he seemed as chuffed as a schoolboy with a new train set.

So, an era ends.

Thank you all for your support and interest and if any other car waifs and strays come my way I'll put up another thread.

Now all I've got to do is find my wife a petrol Honda Civic Tourer with manual box and a new house back in the East Mids. How hard can that be compared to the story of Nelson.

I suspect this isn;t goodbye, just au revoir!

Sad in some ways as it was quite nice to drive but relieved that I can spend some time on the TVR which, after 16 years of reliability has decided to overfuel.

Hope the TVR and P5B haven't learned bad habits from the Strange Rover.

Which tale of the P5B (AKA Benson) would you like? I've had it 23 years so there are many, many stories and adventures

Just found this thread and have happily read the first three pages! To be continued later as it is a bit of deja vous relating to my 2001 P38...

Bought mine just before covid, (4.6). Was on springs with lots and lots to do to bring back to air and life.

Anyhow, I won't distract from your thread which I will catch up with later...Here's a couple of piccy's of mine to keep the P38 interest going after lots of work and is now my daily.

Ah, peter. if only you could have found it sooner you might have saved me a lot of aggro and heartache. Must be something about people with Chimaeras and P38's

Absolutely.

Very, very briefly, I did the following.

Replace springs with original air suspension, which was mostly intact somewhere around the vehicle!
Replaced all seals to pump and valve block.
Replaced headlining.
Replaced front differential as it was whining.
Replaced wheels for this set which I prefer the look of and fitted quality all-terrain tyres.
Loads of stripping surface rust off the chassis and surrounding parts, treating and painting.
Dozens of small minor bits and pieces.

Still have nonworking, heated seats to do.

Basically was a sound car as a base Now will probably keep it for several more years as apart from the odd air suspension glitch. It seems to be 100% reliable.

I look forward to reading the rest of your thread which I will start on later. As for TVR‘s, nothing on the horizon for me at the moment.

I’m assuming you’ve got the car finished and decided to sell it, will find out later!.
Well I won't spoil the rest of the thread for you but as you've probably already gathered, i started with a car that was far from a good basis.

I thught you'd sold the Tiv - Porsche now isn't it?

Meanwhile, I am reduced to trying to figure out why one of the the Lexus' screen wash jets isn't hitting high enough on the screen. Bloody unreliable Jap crap

It's the one way valve knackered - I know, I know, I don't know why this is the problem either.

Local buyer has parked it in his courtyard in pride of place but it doesn't seem to have moved in 10 days.

I'm trying to "bump into" the new owner to see how he's getting on with it.

Meanwhile back in the real world the TVR issues seem to have been resolved with a replacement MAF sensor and a bit of tweaking and a lot pf help with data interpretation from a very nice fellow TVR owner.
