I’ll possibly have a look this afternoon. Agreed though, why they have to make such a frequent service job so fiddly I don’t know.

The cars done well so far this week. We had 36c here on Sunday and the air con struggled a little to get the temps down in the car, maybe another re-gas would have it ice cold rather than just cold.

Parked up getting a coffee in La Flèche this morning. A lovely town with some artisanal shops, could have spent a fortune on hand made leather wallets etc. Settled for café and gâteau from one of the local coffee shops

Still getting around 44 mpg which seems OK for the rural stop start driving. Will get those number up I think on the péage tomorrow

Didn’t get around to the headlights this afternoon as visiting friends. There’s some really wonderful properties out here at a fraction of the cost of a comparative UK place. It’s always tempting to consider a move out here but there’s just one catch; we’d have to move to France

Rewinding two pages. £84 is decent for an alignment all things considered.

£84 is the new £40

Dirty car sat at Portsmouth dock

Got home last night after a 1:30 delay coming out of Portsmouth, they were checking the boot / trailer of every car / van for some reason so that wasn’t ideal.

Coming onto the M275 I thought right let’s get home, up to 70ish and ‘flash flash’ confused oh I appear to be in a 50 mph zone

redcard so that will be a very unwelcome NIP coming through soon.

Quick stats for the trip were 800 odd miles covered, 23 hours of driving and 45.9 mpg average. Id have taken a picture of the journey on idrive but I wiped all the stats by mistake as I got home. MPG was about right doing a lot of stop start driving with a boot full of luggage and most critically there were no breakdowns or issues with the car.

Needs a wash now and prep for Poland in 4 weeks

byebye nice wheels op, A fellow F11 2.0d SE owner here - had ours about 4 years now and I just can’t fault it.

Seems the original owner ticked almost all the option boxes including the self parking option which I’ve still not used but missed the adaptive suspension although it rides nicely on standard springs.

Ours the (ever so) slightly more grandad brown colour scheme :

Looks lovely bud. Wish my original buyer had ticked a few more boxes but that’s life.

Well i’ve been thrown a curve call by the Ms flops. we were talking on the weekend and she raised that we really don’t need 2 cars, I was immediately dismissive but thinking about it I can’t really argue with her. I’ve got my works van and she has the F31 so this 5 largely superfluous.

I kinda knew that getting it but apart from our euro trips it doesn’t move off the drive. The plan therefore is to go to Poland with it in Sept and then put it up for sale along with hers and potentially pick up an F06 6 series GC. Hopefully big enough for a euro jaunt but a little more luxury day to day.

Who knows if this will materialise but that’s the plan at the moment.

So much for keeping my 5 long term getmecoat

Thanks both.

An uneventful trip down to dover from Caerphilly

An acceptable set of figures from the trip, ignore the start time as zero’d it when i got home yesterday evening

Unfortunately the ferry is delayed by an hour so we’re currently trying to entertain a 2 year old on the fly which is always 100% successful of course

Safe travels!
A fellow PH'er pointed me to this thread as I'm looking for an F11 to replace my E61 at some point - she's a bit long in the tooth at 227k (however part of me wants to see just how long she'll go on...)

Lots of useful information - thank you.
I'm not particularly scared of the N47, but it does certainly add a 'what if' to the decision; the M57 in my 525d has been utterly reliable and it'd be a shame to trade it in for something I know has a potential weak spot.

I'd have to have an automatic, but from memory the F1x got the ZF8 which is a brilliant bit of kit.

Ah glad I could go some way to providing vaguely useful information bud smile

Having spent the morning with this F11 (I don’t drive it really other than these trips) it impresses me with just how well engineered and designed it is. The actual driving experience is exactly what I want from a touring car; superbly comfortable and refined, the UI is intuitive and falls to the hand.

In short I’m a big fan of the F11 so gets a thumbs up from me. My previous (short lived) 530d had the zf8 and it was a superb box and suits the 5 much better than my manual.

Re the N47, yep it’s a problem and I’ve actually seen (heard) it first hand so maybe budget for the TC replacement or go M.. Good luck in your search bud

They’re great cars which seem to get ignored a bit these days as people want SUVs.
I only used to do long journeys in mine but since lock down it’s become a bit of a drive ornament. Mines a 2016 520d auto on 112k miles just had what I would call consumables done - O2 sensor, rear air springs and EGR. Otherwise zero issues. The 2.0d engine is great. Obviously not as nice as a 6 cylinder but perfectly good for everyday use and if your just on the motorway you wouldn’t even notice it has 2 less cylinders. 650+miles to a tank no problem at all which is nice. As you said the auto box is fantastic. Had it in a few cars and always performs well.
As mine isn’t being used much I’m probably going to sell it so drop message if you’re interested. Wasn’t meant to be a sales pitch as not prepped in any way.

Have a good trip! Having driven small children across Europe I recommended iPads and audio books. You can get the official Roald Dahl series on audio book which were a big hit with all the family.

Thank again!

Yep ipad mini in the back with a load of kids stuff from Netflix dl’d. Audio books is a good shout as we don’t like him watching (way too) much tv.

Well arrived and we’re all pretty frazzled. I have to say I don’t enjoy driving on the autobahn, if you get a lorry overtaking another in the right and middle lane doing 50 you’re forced into the left lane which averages about 180 mph. I find it tiring relentlessly trying to get around HGVs whilst simultaneously attempting to avoid being rear-ended by a 118d doing 257 kph.

Anyway, arrived at our oft frequented no-expect-spent 1 star Ibis in Garbsen

replete with fine craft ales and stunning views

biggrin

Love this place.

Let’s do it all again tomorrow

Arrived at our final destination this afternoon. Thankfully no issues driving through Poland but a Mercedes A class did get side swiped by an articulated lorry that was overtaking it right in front of us on a single lane road.

(Rant) I tell you if we saw a Toyota Avensis / Ford Focus etc being driven like they are here we’d assume it had been stolen and was in pursuit by the police. It doesn’t matter how fast your going, the 30-40 something year old man in the bland vehicle behind you WILL overtake you, regardless of any factor be it vehicles approaching head on or zero visibility. It’s bloody ridiculous.

Anyway

And again a decent set of figures. I’m knackered.

Glad it's going well, looks like a great trip.

As well as the likes of Amazon audio books are often available to borrow via your library and an app. Not sure if that helps when you're away but we always borrow a load before even a 2 hour road trip for the kids!

That’s looking very smart, and very good figures for the trip.
