Ariel Nomad Turbo Conversion

Loving this! Looks like a LOT of fun, look forward to your full trip story.
Thanks! I'll put some more detail about route etc at some point. The one thing that let it down a little on the trip was how bloody loud it is... I'm all for a bit of antisocial exhaust noise, but I actually think I've lost some significant hearing since coming back.
So to rectify that, I've got it booked in to have a more ear-friendly exhaust made for it in 10 days time at the 'Exhaust Doctor' in Newcastle. He made an X-Pipe system for my old Ultima GTR and he is really talented, so was the only choice really. Very soon after that I'll be getting to over to get properly mapped, so the fun can really start.

Just loving this thread..........As as you can more pics on the latest work...really interested to see what she makes on full boost after the mapping session and what Aerial think.
Thanks! Much appreciated. The guys at Ariel loved it and were very impressed with the build quality of it. To be fair - taking it around Spain and Portugal a couple of days after getting it back from a major engine out turbo conversion and not having one single issue is testament to the quality of the build. I would recommend if anyone is ever near the Ariel factory to pop in and see them. It's a fantastic set up there, and just atoms scattered everywhere, and the guys I've dealt with are some of the most friendly, enthusiastic people I've met.
Quick update...
The only downside of the Nomad has been how bloody loud it is. It's great in short doses, but wearing earplugs with ear defenders on top gets old quite fast.
When we did the conversion, Chris at Hard Knocks made a bolt on silenced exhaust. With the rush of getting it all sorted for Portugal I never got around to putting it on. I fitted it this week, and it's so much nicer! The screamer pipe is still loud over about 3.5k rpm, so as mentioned, I have booked it in to an amazing local exhaust fabricator (The Exhaust Doctor near Newcastle - he did the exhaust on my old Ultima) who will make a proper system for it. I'm thinking of valving it so we can have different settings - Loud, medium and quiet, but we will see what he can do.

The rear tyres (which were new about 3 weeks ago...) are looking sorry for themselves

...and I've been daily-ing it to work this week. It's been a pleasure with the nice weather and the new quieter exhaust. Blends in well in the work car park

I also did a little edit of some of the trip footage. Will do a proper length edit at some point, but this gives a good idea of what we got up to:

I’d get him to look at adding a mount to the silencer as well, the turbo is not going to be happy long term with that overhung load of the silencer hanging off it unsupported. The only downside of the Nomad has been how bloody loud it is. Yep - this little one was just made for track days and as a temporary measure really - the proper one will be mounted properly. ol said:

Looks like it was a great boys trip! Very jealoushttps://youtu.be/6LjEL8h-3hY
Dropped it off yesterday to get an exhaust made up!
We had the option of having manually removable silencers, so I'd be able to swap them to make it quiet or loud... or make a remote control valved exhaust so at the push of a button it can be instantly antisocial, or purr through the villages without waking the neighbours.
The quality of the build so far means that spending the extra money on a valved exhaust is really the only option, and we have designed a nice looking system with twin centre exits. Should be finished within the week, so will update this as I get sent progress photos.

Looking good.....Looking really good.
I guess the ceramic coating would be useful simply from a safety perspective. With the system being that close the turbo, it's going to get hot. Not sure if you can the silencer ceramic coated, but if not a small custom heat shield would actually look really good and in keeping with the car's looks too.
Something like this (note: they do a VTEC version):

Thanks. There is actually a heat shield type exhaust cover for the original Nomad exhaust, but obviously wouldn't fit this now. To be fair, I don't think it's going to get excessively hot. There is plenty of airflow back there, and the turbo blanket stops the turbo from melting anything. I guess the ceramic coating would be useful simply from a safety perspective. I might end up getting the system ceramic coated black over winter, but depends how it looks in the metal.
The exhaust it taking a little longer than planned, as they had fitted me in around other jobs, but it's coming along. They sent me a few progress photos and video today. The valve really works well from the video - Still got to plumb in the screamer pipe, and a few bits, but it's looking serious!

Final mapping in about 10 days, then we have hired a Welsh rally stage for my Nomad group, so should be a fun way to test the new map! 10+ Nomads confirmed...

I dont know but it might be harder to clean when ceramic coated, being that it is all exposed. With Stainless all you need is some bleach and 5/10 mins and your all clean and shiney again
