It looks like part 3 is coming up. My wife rang me to say it had conked out. She described it as a single crisp packet popping noise and then it slowly cut out and wouldn't start. It wouldn't turn over.
...........slipped a tooth and bent a valve.

Coming soon, to Netflix... (I'd watch it!)

Is this the final straw for the car, or is it a case of see what the issue is, first?

It might be the final straw. I need to do some number crunching before I make any decisions.

I think it's not worth fixing the engine, it always sounded ropey to the point where I couldn't sell the car if I wanted to. If I repaired it, I'd expect it to still sound the same. I'd be locked in again, just waiting for the next failure. I don't think I should carry on spending good money after bad.

That leaves me with 3 options.

Sell it the same as how I bought it as a non-runner, probably get 5-6k for it now the values have dropped.

Break it for parts - I'd need to price up if it's worth more than 5-6k otherwise it's pointless, I doubt it is

Buy a 3k used engine, fit that and just sell it on.

We both really like the car but it can't carry on like it is.

I'm glad you're taking a pragmatic view. My thoughts are the same as your post above. After all the hassle I think I'd be tempted to just sell it as it is and let someone else have the headache.

Gutted. I always cross my fingers that it's ok when I see this thread pop up. Hope you can find a way to get it sorted.

Ugh that is a pain.

I have always been ont he side of fixing this one - better the devil you spanner etc., but the numbers involved (and time) for a possible new engine, that may also be an unknown quantity, seems now to be the wrong road to take.

For the first time ever on a PH thread (probably), I would say cut losses and ... buy a ... Punto? Maybe?

Reading this thread has cemented that my decision was correct in trading my FPace when the warranty expired....

Could you not.... give a full on engine conversion a go? Something good value.

Fit something reliable, like a rotary.

Is the correct answer.

I love the 'fit a different engine/LS/Ford Pinto/cement mixer' comments. laugh

Lads......no.

The only engine that will fit in this car and work* is the piece of st JLR saddled it with.

Given you think you'd get 6k for it as a non runner I'd probably sell it. If you fix it, you'll just be waiting for something else to go wrong on it.

Sell it and move on. Unfortunately.
