I had a similar experience on my Alfa 156. Was perfect with a cat back. Changed out some rotten cheapy front pipes for properly made ones and it got a lot louder. I have a similar dilemma, but the volume has just gone up to noticeable when cruising, fortunately no drone.

Re 406 coupes, I saw a blue V6 for sale nearby and they look fantastic value for money. There's too much overlap with the Alfa (albeit more cruisy), otherwise I was sorely tempted.

Probably the influence of super touring and early 2000s btcc, but I have a bit of a soft spot for this sort of era repmobile and derivatives. Perhaps related to that they always look a little under wheeled and a touch high. Any plans along those lines?

Very cool with all the bushes - there are so many no longer available bushes for various cars and you seem to have a good idea what is going on there. Rock hard PU is rarely the right solution, so making it work better is very helpful.

I don't want to change the lines too much because it's a beautiful car (well it would be if the paint wasn't knackered), but I might do a little bit of a ST-esque splitter, wheel deflectors and maybe a rear diffuser. Just enough to tidy it up without spoiling the lines.
I am going to lower it slightly though - I'm having some springs made for me atm just to drop it 20mm and close the arch gap up slightly, and reduce a little bit of body roll - since I don't run a front antiroll bar it does roll a bit at the limit and the tyres get a bit squirmy because there's not enough camber gain on a strut.

Of course I could fix that with custom wishbones and more static camber...I'm thinking about it...
