Have a scout around on Ebay, you'll probably be able to pick up the original parts that were taken from the car and if you're really lucky, they might still have the loom plugs still attached with the pieces of harness you're missing..

Seems like you’ve won on this one.

Took a gamble but you knew the risks, well done!

Blimey that was quick. Is it just the idrive screen left to fit?

Still need to do the wiring behind the steering wheel but once I get the tie rod replaced this afternoon it will be “drivable”. (No turn signals and wipers constantly on, might need to pull the fuse in the meantime)

I don't think turn signals work on BMW's anyway so maybe it's just the wipers. laugh

Looking at the spec and overall apparent condition you've bagged yourself an amazing car at an amazing price. I do hope the repair process is straightforward as it appears it might be.

Interested to know if the service history shows up once the replacement iDrive unit is plugged in. Not sure if the data is stored inside the unit itself or elsewhere, with the unit just acting as a monitor.
Should do; due a service now but otherwise OK:

History is on Kasio, the idrive display is just another view of this.

Can you? I would like to do that on my x5 but thought it had to be coded

These were the parts I purchased so far:

+ Left Tie Rod assembly @ £92

Total of £1529.

The car sits at £9730 so far. Still need to pay the mobile mechanic (roughly £200)

Should be a complete running car for a tad less than £10k.

That's good going, about half the price of a non cat registered car.

A quick plug-in of the idrive system and Voilá!

Still need to do some wiring and get a few odd bolts but the car is now complete!

I buy most of my cars from Copart, the most recent one being a 2017 Touareg with 67k on the clock, repaired by myself and total cost (purchase/delivery/fees/repairs) is £10k all in. Yes it had forklift damage underneath but you have just got to factor it into your calcs...plastic undertray and fuel tank protector, no big deal!

Buying, repairing and running light damage cars gets me into nicer cars than I can ordinarily justify buying and in 2024 should be seen as environmentaly friendly....! It is not without risk though and for someone with a full time job can be a real headache fitting it around things, spending time hunting for used parts etc etc. Go in eyes wide open.

Looks like you got a good one, well done!

Look who showed up! Top bloke too, fitted my new tie rod in half an hour! Never thought they would but chanced it and worked out! Got let down by two mobile mechanics so gave the AA a go.

And…. It now drives absolutely beautifully! Next stage: a wheel alignment!

I am actually! It went as well as it could I guess.

Also let me give a shoutout to:

https://www.roadtaxmartin.com/

As without him I wouldn’t be able to tax the car. (No V5 was given, had to apply for one)

Martin can tax your car without any documents. In this instance his £60 fee was greatly offset by the fact I could call the AA to replace my tie rod “free of charge” vs the cost of a mobile mechanic. I will also be able to drive the car now, instead of waiting up to 8 weeks for a V5 to be sent to me.
