Due to ever increasing fuel costs, RFL, the cost of maintenance, and the type of driving / mileage that my Wife and I do each day, we realised whilst doing our tax return back in January that we had reached the tipping point.

Whilst financially our stars are not presently perfectly aligned, (I need to sell my Wife’s current car), we had agreed that if a certain vehicle came up for sale in a certain spec, within an agreed mileage and price, we’d go for it.

Well, last week such a vehicle did come up for sale on AutoTrader. Just one small problem……. It was at the other end of the country. 225 miles away. Which is a greater distance than the maximum range of the new vehicle. So really this is two ‘firsts’ for me. Not only will this be my first EV, it will be the first time that I’ve bought a vehicle sight unseen.

Thankfully the seller has been great. A contract of sale was agreed with only a couple of little tweaks required each way. At invoice number 0001, we are his first proper customers, (he used to work in the City, but has taken semi-retirement to sell cars), and his customer service has been first class throughout.

The deposit has been paid. Hotel booked for part way home tonight, and recovery arranged to collect the new vehicle from our overnight stay to return it back to our home.

I’ve managed to clear quite a bit of my and my Wife’s work schedule over the next couple of days, so I should be finished by late lunchtime today, then the drive down south to colllect the new vehicle.

With workload partially cleared, it was a nice lie-in for me this morning.

A full service and 12 months MOT were carried out on my Wife’s soon to be departed Citroen yesterday. It goes into the bodyshop tomorrow to sort out a couple of minor parking dings, then I need to get it fully valeted. Hopefully it will be on eBay / AutoTrader by the end of this week coming. The Jaguar behind it will be getting the same treatment once the Citroen is sold.

And yes, I do need to cut my hedge. I just need the time and the favourable weather.

You’ll just have to wait and see smile

I should be down there, (not far from you actually), by late afternoon to early evening today.

Just to flag you’ll be paying the same RFL as normal petrol and diesel cars next year

Why are you having the car recovered from your overnight stop?

Range? can you not stick it on a public charger.

Just curious smile

As one day I might be forced into an EV and interested in why it can't be driven all the way home despite the distance being greater than the range.

I bought a Mercury Grand Marquis V8 unseen. Me in London and the car was in the Highlands.

Flight, train journey and a lift by the owner from the station.

I turned it into a 3 day holiday and got to see parts of Scotland I'd never seen before and then drove South.

Being an old school gas guzzler that journey was far greater than the car's range by a few multiples laugh

Still, it was over 10 years ago but I remember that trip fondly.

Good luck with yours.

I’m not sure I understand this bit? Why pay for recovery rather than just book a hotel with destination charging and continue yourself the next day?

All will be revealed this evening.

If I answer that logical question now, it will give the game away. And as seen as the only guess that we’ve had so far is incorrect, (a Citroen Ami), I don’t want to do that. smile

Perhaps the recovery agent also failed to?
