sniff didn`t you do Oulton little while back in porker?Think you may have used my garage when you had oil leak.
car looks great let me know when up for trackday and might fetch mine out too.I was in white pug 205 with Mi16 engine.
Yeah that was me, oil was leaking onto the hot exhaust so it looked quite dramatic. Going back to basics with a track car, the plan was to just get a banger mot failure or something, but the costs of getting something track prepared soon escalated so it made sense to get something ready done. Got a load of PH stickers to go on the pug and it will need a new battery but after a full service it should be ready to go. Looking out for a spare set of wheels and slicks if you know of anything for sale? Hope to see you on track again soon.

cheaper than a race car battery is picking up one from a bedford rascal or similar little vehicle for a tenner at the scrappy smile not quite as small mind, but a bit cheaper...

Top tip thanks! Saw a 'red top 8' battery go for £45 on ebay the other day, going to have a look in the garage later to see if I've got something lying around just to fire her up for now.

Thanks but I'm looking for a cheap set of part-worn full slicks. Apparently the ones they use in the clio cup race series are the correct size for the standard 1.9 rims. Wouldn't mind a nice set of spare rims if you know of any though.

Just to update things a little, after 3 full trackdays without any reliability problems and having tweaked the handling I feel ready for a bit more power so have picked up this to go in:

It's missing a few bits like the injectors and AFM but as I'll be running this one on carbs aswell (got a pair of twin 45 Delorttos to go on) I didn't mind. Need to borrow an engine stand off a mate then I'll fit the new water pump, timing belt and tensioner, he's also going to make me a trap door baffle for the sump as the Mi16 engines are prone to oil surge on track.

Once the whole thing's completed I'll be selling my old 8 valve with a Piper 270 cam, lightened flywheel and twin 40mm Delorttos in the classifieds on here.

Any advice on the Mi16 conversion would be very much appreciated.

Without wanting to depress you I really would think about oil surge issues especially if you are going to use part worn slicks or track biased tyres.

Mi's are notorious for suffering from this even on road usage, so on a track you need to be very careful. A few people do get away with using them without problems but the majority suffer. I know you mentioned about a baffle in the sump - but this is not always known to solve the problem as it is slightly more complicated than that.

Thats why a gti-6 engine was mentioned as the xu10's don't seem to suffer the same as the xu9's - thats why I went down the turbo route as opposed to mi.

As has been said before there is loads of info on 205gtidrivers if you take the time to register.

What else can I do then apart from a trap door sump? Can I get the oil pick-up pipe extended or is the only options to dry sump or use an accusump?

There seems to be quite a few explanations tbh and I am not well up on it enough to give a definitive answer, some think it is just the sump, others think it is the oil drainage capacity of the head and some think it is due to the fundamental design of the crank and rods and how the oil is distributed through them.

There is a very good thread at the mo on 205gtidrivers about what is thought to be a good solution. The best thing you can do is just have a read of all the different problems and solutions and see what the easiest solution for you is...

I extended the oil pickup and put on a traddoor'd sump from an XU10 engine. It's probably the most cost effective solution although many people have still had trouble. The way I see it, it's not worth spending the earth to dry-sump an engine that can be picked up quite cheaply. If mine still decides to go pop then i'll be going to a GTI-6 engine as these generally don't seem to suffer so much (so i've been led to believe).

The other thing to do is get a decent guage so at least you can keep an eye on it, although i've still yet to do this so i'm running the gauntlett at the mo!whistle
