You could equally avoid spending £5000 by stealing all your groceries, or by robbing a post office.

If you get away with it, fine, if you don't then expect to face the consequences - the fronting bint thread springs to mind!

smile
Oh yeah the amount I have got by stealing all my groceries is way past £5k!

On a serious note, they are hardly similar though and still a hell lot better than driving uninsured!

If you are fronting you are driving uninsured, you just might be lucky and get away with it.

FFS open your eyes

Did you just get off the special bus or something

I would have saved £5k on my car if I had just stole it in the first place!

Nothing wrong with having your Mum on the documents as long as she is GEUNINELY the main driver, the snag being you are not building up any NCB with most firms...

My son (19) has just passed his test and is paying £2500 fully comp with NU to insure a newish Kia Picanto.....

I have explained to him it is better to take the hit now and reap the benefit in three/four years...

Don't want to go with unheard of companies...been there, done that years ago....

Another son (22) pays £550 tpft with Quinn on a (02) Punto.....

Thats the same thing that I thought, if I go on my parents insurance.. I won't be gaining my own NCB, might aswell take the hit as you say and pay high now (£2300) and hopefully it'll slowly come down.

Cheaper maybe....ILLEGAL definately.
is it that much cheaper ? I was a named driver on my mums car. It was her car, but she had a company car as well (back in the 80's) and quite frankly I think the difference was marginal.

Haha, everyone makes it out to be a big deal. But if the Cars owner on the V5 is his mother and she is the policy holder, there is nothing wrong with him being a named driver on there.

Sigh. If you are the main user of a car, then you can't be a named driver. It's called fronting, it's illegal and it is a big deal.

The problem is that Insurance Companies are happy for the money to come in, but they don't want to pay out.

My nephew is a named driver on his mothers car. She's owned that actual car since he was 8 (I think). He insists on referring to it as his car, but it's not his and probabally never will be. If he crashes it, the insurance company will try to get out of it.

Not really

By the age of 19 I owned my 328i sport

At the age of 18 I owned a 323i coupe

Because I started getting my no claims early I now pay fk all

In fact I pay £580 at 21 for my 328i sport - Couldn't be happier

I've always had my own policy, but thats not to say I haven't had my mum and dad on the policy to bring the cost down!
I would suggest thatss the better way of doing it, as fronting is a bit of a cheat, which just fundamentaly penalises the honest(ish) rest of us!

I did it the other way round. When I passed my test my parents were running a company with a fleet policy so I insured my 1.1 Metro on there. I had to pretend I was a cleaner or something in the business though. At the time NU said that I would be able to provide some proof in future that I was on a fleet policy and that would go someway towards NCB, WRONG, not one company would accept that when I tried to get my own insurance. So rather than go the "fronting" route when I wanted a decent car I insured it in my name and put my parents on as named drivers, that reduced the premium by about 500 quid if I remember rightly. However I still had to work both nuts off to pay the premium!

I don't agree with it, but I can see why people do it. It's a visious circle, insurance companies charge a fortune because "all" 17 year olds are out to kill someone, so the only way they can get round it is fronting.

I don't think it's the end of the world, considering about 60% of new drivers are 'fronting'.. In fact, in my circle of friends i'm about the only one with my own policy, and they range from 20-26. If people take the risk, it's their choice.

And to all the Vicky Pollards "I so can't believe you said that on a public forum", what a load of balls! It's not as if the law don't know it's going on! Exactly what percentage of arrests do you think are made every year from threads an off-duty policeman has read on PH?? If 'fronting' actually bothered the plod, they would sit outside the local McDonald's and stop all the 19 yr olds driving group 20 cars on their third party extension, not sit reading an internet forum all day!

Another one who clearly didn't read the fronting bint thread.

Interesting to see what you think if you get hit by a driver who has the policy voided because they were fronting... It's their choice as you say - but you will be the one screwed as a result. Not the end of the world I guess.

The insurer for the negligent driver would have to pay out to the innocent driver regardless. Whether or not they then pursue a recovery of their outlay against their policyholder directly is another matter....if the policyholder is good for the cash, I would expect them to do so.

Insurers check forums and if they were to be investigating an insurance claim and then came across a post by the driver declaring that they were indeed fronting then they wouldn't pay out.
