SXiLad is not fronting, what he is doing is perfectly legal and what I advise my clients to do for their own children, but always advise that as soon as they have passed their test to switch the insurance into their own name as we over a great young persons policy, which tends to win them over.

Clients agree with what I say all the time.

Fronting is when a high performance car is insured in a parents name with the young'un as a named driver, but the young'un is the main driver hence saving the young'un a ton of cash.
Surely fronting is fronting regardless of the car's performance?

You can also be listed as main driver on somebody elses policy.

When I was 18 I was insured on my mothers Golf, as a genuine named driver.
This continued untill I finished uni.
I then got a job away from home and took the car with me. We called the insurance company and changed the policy so that I was the "main driver" and told them the car was going to be kept elsewhere and the insurers were fine with it. We had to pay some extra money (I think it was £250) but I still got my mothers NCB discount.
At the time this was much much cheaper than having my own policy.

I carried on like this for another year, at which point I gave the golf back to my mother and bought my own car and had my own insurance.

The rules may have changed in the last 5 years but im sure that we didnt do anything illegal.

I think this thread went off track a bit, it wasn't really all aimed at SXI_Lad I don' think.

One question - why does a high performance car have to be involved for it to be fronting? Surely it can be any vehicle?

If I can find a small engined Caterham or similar for under £2,500 in teh Spring I might just go for it...

Nice car SXI_lad, Mum keeps mentioning Corsa's to me, maybe the parents are planning something...

Seriously guys, give him a break... I've been passed since September driving the little runabout we have. It's a 1993 Mazda 323, My Mum's name is on the V5 and is the policy holder with my Dad and I as named drivers. (Zurich charge us £920 fully comp) I have driven the car almost every day since September 22nd, both Mum and Dad have used it only a hand ful of times. In March Dad is thinking about getting me a car that's cheaper to insure so he can get me on my own policy so I can get an NCB. I was always under the impression that this was fine...

Am interested, where can we find more information on this?

I'd be very careful then... when i first passed i was a named driver with my dad as main driver.. when in reality i drove it.. then after a month.. it was stolen and burnt out...

my dad told them i used it to go to college and they started going on about fronting etc.

ever since ive had my own policy and now have nearly 6 years NCB under my belt. best thing i ever did.

Sorry meant to say that USUALLY fronting involves a high performance car for the age of the young driver, this can be something as timid as a 1.8 Astra.

Give me a PM Waugh-terfall, I'll point you in the right direction.

It's perfectly legal for the policy to be in the name of the parent, but with the child named as the main driver - but not many companies will quote for that circumstance AFAIK. Declaring that the parent is the main driver when they are not, regardless of power, age or value is fronting.

Is it your official company policy to encourage fronting?

Wow that car looks superb and insurance looks very cheap as well will be looking for a first car soon so if you dont mind how much did you pay for the car because if decent price may look into getting one.

All you have to do to make sure you're not "fronting" is make it clear to the insurer who the "main driver" is.

The car can be in any of your names (your's, your mum's, your dads etc) and the policy usually has to be in the same name. i.e the one on the V5. (there are exceptions)

You HAVE to specify who the main driver is.

If you lie about it (SXi Lad hasn't) you're fronting. And breaking the law. And driving uninsured.

That is all.

That Ginetta G32 is awesome. First time i've ever seen one. Has hints of RS200 in it. Very cool.

When in that post did I encourage fronting.

What I said was that it is OK for a parent to insure their childs car whilst the child has a provisional license. What I forgot to add is that I suggest that the V5 is placed in the parents name until the child passes the test so technically the car is owned by theparent until the child passes their test then when they call to inform us that there child has passed their test we prepare a quote in the childs name to start ASAP.

Has that cleared that up.

I DO NOT encourage fronting, and it angers me that you suggested so.
