Nice choice, I don't regret my choice of car either, 99 E39 528i SE. Because I was only 21 when I bought it I get all the usual witty comments such as "is that your dads car" etc but I tend to ignore them. Its exactly what I wanted though, big, comfy, moderately powerful (although the ST220 would probably eat it for breakfast) and surprisingly not that thirsty for what it is.

I must admit I always felt the brakes seemeed pretty decent on Si's ST, though to be fair you HAVE been spoiled by the ATR - the brakes on those were superb.

Just for reference...

Ford press release said:
ST220 features 300 mm ventilated disc brakes at the front, each with single pot callipers equipped with large, 57 mm pistons to exert powerful pressure on the brake pads. At the rear, solid discs measuring 280 mm are fitted.

The brake system delivers 62 mph to zero braking distances of 37 metres

The ATR brakes arent all that either IMHO again i had new pads and discs and the system bled.

Both cars offer reasonable braking, but nothing ground breaking!

I suppose that manufacturers aren't going to fit 6 piston cross-drilled jobbies to what is essentially a family saloon; for comfort's sake. In the hands of an unskilled driver such a setup would leave passengers impaled on the dashboard and worn flat tyres.

Although, there is no reason they can't be upgraded later on....

It's a nice car you've got there, but should be kept as discreet as possible. Maybe a growlier exhaust, but keep all other modifications on the performance side.

Absolutely, the wheels are my favourite bit so they wont be getting changed, as i said all i will be doing to the outside is having the windows tinted and possibly later on lowered. Also want to get a colour coded grill as the previous keeper has put a chrome rimmed one on.

I spotted that - there's demand for them, so you shouldn't have too much grief getting rid of it! smile

I've had the grilles and fog light surrounds colour coded, and the ones at the rear done too. I've also had the extra reflectors fitted, that are featured on the later cars (revised tail lights had no reflectors).

Too true... the 220 eats up a surprising amount of cars, incl the 328i as well, arguably the 330i / 535i of that period too

To the OP, do you know what bhp you are now getting with your mods?

I had a good play with an E39 530i M, it was a good race but it was obvious that I had the upper hand, which grew as we got faster and faster. I did not know they were 231bhp until I got home and looked it up.

Mind you you must have been 150-200kg lighter I would have thought?

Nice car, but this seems a bit of a bitter comment!!
indeed..

On a side note my dad just brought me a brand new mini s tongue out
Go you...
I forgot to say I'm joking tongue out

If my dad brought me a brand new mini I think I would cry because a) I don't like minis and b) it's brand new c) It's a waste of money and d) I'd rather have something else.

There's nothing wrong with Mummy and Daddy's money!

Nice car, but no need for that comment.

I agree.. Some people are far too 'LOOK WHAT I DID ALL ON MY OWN'

On another note.. You're a lucky boy to be driving an s3 at 19 redface

(even though I don't like the s3)

And i am fed up with people suggesting its my dads car, and people pretending they are succesful and prosperous when they get everything handed to them on a plate wink

Each to their own on that subject, absolutely no problem with peoples parents giving their children gifts, its the way you handle it that makes you who you are IMHO.

I have a friend with a 530 sport, havent had a chance to play yet but im fairly confident the ST should have the edge, mostly down the 6 speed i would have thought.

Later cars had improved brake pedal feel-i still prefer the feel of my old Mk1's brakes even though i dare say the 220 will stop better?? I'm sure i read in a Mondeo TSB somewhere the structural stength differences between hatch & saloon. Saloon is nicer anyway smile

Performance blue are of course the quickest smile Talking of which the saloon shape has the best overall aerodynamics.(only the estate has less lift but loses out elswhere)
