Not everyones cup of tea but I love these old M3's, pound for pound these BMW's are a bargain just as long as nothing major goes wrong ( fingers crossed ). Bought this one about 8 months ago from a guy on PistonHeads its the SMG version and wasn't my 1st choice but once I saw the car I had to have it, inside and out its like new and totally standard as it came out the factory. Since I've had it the SMG has really grown on me and much prefer it over the manuals.

I've just spent the last few hours getting the car ready for my annual trip to LeMans for the 24hr race hence the stickers ( not permanent and will be removed once back but may keep them on another week for the F1 at Silverstone )

Just out of curiousity, are those plates legal for UK roads?

Car looks good by the way, I wouldn't have the patience to apply those stickers and line them up hehe

Unfortunately not but hey they finish of the black and silver scheme off a T, Its my second car so its not likely to be used until I head off to LeMans and once in France I'm sure the French police will have better things to do.

Just knew the 1st reply would be about the plates!! They aren't legal, but IMO they make the car look a little different from everyone else on the road. I'm sure the OP doesn't need telling about the law!!

Car looks great BTW. Have you posted it in the thread in the 'LeMans' forum?

Cheers for the comments, posted on the LeMans forum about 5 minutes after I finished the stickers.

I agree I like the look of the plates, I was curious as to their legality because I wouldn't mind a set on my P&J!

My understanding of the law about these plates is just as long as you don't get pulled more than 3 times then the worst you can expect is a fine but any more than that and you run the risk of the car be confiscated so 2 pulls and the plates come off. Got pulled last year in my RenualtSport Megane just after I got back from LeMans running black plates and they just told me off but it may have also been something to do with the stickers I had on the car that attracted their attention. ( I may have this all wrong though )

AFAIK, A car has to be above a certain age to run those plates legally. When my son had his beetle, we ran these plates with no problems, but another one of his mates with a later spec bug couldnt run them. That's just how i've always understood it anyway.

From memoiry its cars registered before 01.01.1973 or something like that, its a 72 to 73 crossover when the law changed to having yellow and white plates.

There's no '3 strikes and you're out' before being given a ticket. Its up to whoever stops you if they give you either a £30 FPN or have a bit of a word in your ear about getting them changed over.

Car looks good though (but I'd stick with legal plates).

Its only for LeMans so they will come off once I'm back so not to much to worry about, Have seen a few cars with these plates on around the Bucks area so I wouldn't be the 1st. Cars locked up in the garage until I go so not to much to worry about.

What do the black stripes on the headlights mean?
