The £75 Mk2 Golf CL 4+E
Discussion
I picked up this MK2 CL 4+E 1600 on ebay a few weeks ago for the princely sum of £75. Put it through an MOT and all it needed was a new horn! Its my second car at 18 and joins the 1972 Beetle I've owned since I was 15.
It looked like this and had been nestling in a bush for a year...
Story behind it is that the previous owner went to Australia for a gap year and decided to stay there long term leaving the car in his parents front garden.
Gave it a wash:
Then stuck some peanut butter on the bumpers and trim:
Sills and floors are pretty rust free!
Interior was filthy so stripped it out and cleaned everything properly. Came up really nicely in the end, even the stained seats!
Oops...
Sprayed up a few bits:
Cleaned up engine:
Paint came up ok after a whole day of T-Cut'ing.
Then I heat gunned the bumpers and did a few other bits...
Looking pretty good I think. Has very little rust too, inner arches all cleaned back brilliantly considering its done 250,000 miles.
An epic bargain too as it has a new exhaust, new JVC face off stereo and Alpine speakers, recent tyres, Pirelli P Slot wheels (rarer Mk1 type), new engine belts and oil filter, a sunroof, central locking and untorn seats.
As for modifications, its pretty stock aside from the wheels and a Weber carburettor conversion although I'm planning to add an anti roll bar, add uprated shock absorbers or coil overs, GTI front brake conversion and finally to add a GTI 8v cam, distributor and exhaust manifold to the engine. If the car proves to be a good 'un long term I'll certainly consider an engine swap. Body wise I'd like to keep the car standard as I'm bored of seeing de-badged grills and smoked lights.
Some of you may remember the thread about my first car, the Beetle which now looks like this:
Now I've got a sensible daily driver there are plans afoot to turn the bug into a full on Porsche Salzburg specification historic rally car however this may take some time seeing as I'm somewhat lacking in the cash department.

Cheers for the compliments everyone. Do not fear, the Pirelli P slots are staying.
Due to being a fairly skint student I haven't been driving for the last few months.
The good news is that I've finally managed to find some relatively 'affordable' () insurance and as of the 11th of December I am back on the road!
The Golf is looking a little bit different now, just a few subtle changes:
New number plates and grill have been fitted and a pair of red stripe bumpers are waiting for me at home.
I've also replaced the disintegrating steering wheel for a nice late GL / GTi item and a new stock gear knob and leather gear gaiter:
It's getting GTi vented front discs and new pads next month too as the brakes are not hugely confidence inspiring at the moment.
Could really do with a good going over with super resin polish too.

Car looks great, its nice to see a cheap car being looked after - bargain at £75 to say the least!
try this stuff on the bumpers, it transformed my gti.

can get it in black too.

I had a red 1990 gti same colour and spent ages with a red cut and polish compound before i traded it.
I think it will return to pink very quickly after the tcut unless something else is done to prevent the pinking.
however good potential there to make an ordinary car look good with a few well placed mods.

Those p-slots are worth quite a bit more than the car. I'd suggest locking nuts, and taking the centre caps off for "safe keeping" because there's a lot of p-slots out there, but not many still with the caps...Once again, thanks for the nice words.
Don't I just know it! I only ever put them on for photos. I've managed to find some alternative Mk2/3 centre caps which fit the wheels to use for everyday journeys but I'm not sure whether to go with them or run cap-less and detail the wheels. Either way they could do with a splash of paint, I just don't want to draw too much attention to them.

Out of interest Oldspeed, how do you afford to have two cars at the age of 18?
