I am with jimmyb on this one, the car looks ste and is too barryboy for PH, there are plenty of sites catering for barryboy cars, this site never has been about this sort of thing and it is noticeable that it is the newer/younger members who defend cars like this.
And may I ask your age?

If everyone liked the same styling then would all cars not look the same? Wheels aside, is the styling on that Golf not pretty subtle. In fact, until I read what was done I couldn't see any difference from a standard Golf.

To say someone's car looks 'ste' is a disgrace. In fact, I am not a fan of the TVR in your profile, so if you had a thread in the member's section and I said it looked 'ste' would you not be offended? If you don't like it, why bother to take the time even to comment? I'm sorry, but your opinion, like your username, is 'pooh'..

I could cope if you said my TVR looked ste.
The point is that PH never has been a max power type of site, it started out as a dedicated TVR site and became a more broad based performance car site. As I said there are plenty of sites dedicated to Max power type cars and it would be a pity if PH lost what has made it successful and went down that road.
My concern is that PH has already lost many of its original members and is definitely a poorer place as a result.
As for my log in name if you were anything other than some sort of halfwit you would know that it relates to a bear.

And you're helping matters by saying someone's car looks 'ste'? I think not. Why not give some sort of constructive post, rather than 'too Barryboys'. People laugh at Barryboys for their snobby views, and opinions like yours aren't helping Pistonheads, are they? The lad is a car enthusiast, he's 23, at uni, and his car is immaculate. He's also spent over £1000 on the car in the last week alone. I'm sure if he could afford a TVR he would have one, so for you to come on and say his car looks 'ste' is pathetic. Grow up. We all know how the site started, but the fact is that there are a lot more jap/euro owners on here now than TVR owners, and most have styling mods to go along with their performance mods. Nothing you can say will change that.

I kind of agree with you - but at the same time we dont want this to be a site that only ever has positive comments. Everyone has an opinion and if they think it doesnt look good then they should be entitled to post their view, but perhaps without being rude...

I dont like his car much to be honest, but I can appreciate the work and the condition that it is in.

Im sure plently of people dont like my car, but im ok with that. smile

The OP asked what people thought of his car.

Pooh said his opinion

There's nothing more to it.
Spot on.

This site is not for bland eulogies, it's for honest opinions. If you don't like honesty, don't read.

It's a youngsters thing isn't it ? Not done for any other reason than it's "trendy". Like walking around with your trousers hanging over your arse crack to show off your grundies. (Which also looks bloody stupid).

Overall though, a tidy looking Golf.

You are completely missing the point of the forum with your first post. If you choose to post here, you take the positive and negative opinions. If you can't cope with that, don't post.

PS - how do you know it 'goes great'? Have you driven it?

I fear you are missing the point!!

Ok he asked for opinions, but he didnt ask for people to be rude and offensive did he?? People said a few things about my car but they said them in a non-offensive way and I have lost no sleep over it. It would be stupid to think that everyone would like the same things and no-one is so naive to think that!

There are far too many keyboard warriors on this site now.

I respectfully disagree with you falkster.

I certainly wasn't rude about his car (not that you suggested I was of course) but the nature of the internet and particularly PH is that you will get a wide variety of opinions and some will be honest and some might be rude. I would hate PH to be watered down to 'only say nice things or nothing'. I'm pretty sure you would after a while too.

You post, you grin and bear the negatives. I did when I posted in RR.

I like it. good work!

also saw these and thought i would share. you sir have not tried hard enough!

also, is this stretched? do you approve?

i would like to point out that all images were found with a quicj google for stretched tyres.
I do like the "clean" euro look on cars - debadged, etc. very slick.

However the stretched tyre thing will always divide opinion. Those F1 cars - thats as the tyres were designed to be used.

However whilst there is no way the tyres on these cars were designed to be used stretched, its very possible that in the event of an incident, the fact that the tyres were used outside of their initial design tolerances could cause issues with the insurance.

But then I doubt a car like this will be pushed to its limits that regularly, and at the end of the day its a good looking, clean, and dare I say it - inoffensive (?) car.

When PH was created it was for sports and performance cars (TVR, Lotus, Porsche etc) and the only modifications made to those cars were to aid performance on track (for example). Since then the site has grown in demographic range but editorially and as a brand we still stay true to our roots of that type of performance car.

For that reason, many PH members won't 'get' the type of car shown in this thread however, all car enthusiasts are welcome here and most members will salute the dedication you have towards your vehicles, even if they don't like them personally.

While I may not understand this type of modification I won't be rude about it (you may not like my cars after all) but I hope that goes some way to understanding some peoples reaction. I repeat that rudeness is uncalled for, but I guess some are seeing cars on the forums that we are not used to. Some will learn from it and others will be 100% against it - that's life after all. I think you will find that many will appreciate a car if it is done tastefully and it is obvious that the owner spends a lot of time creating a car that works for them.

Anyway, enjoy PH and I hope it gives you what you expect......please play together nicely as getting along is the most important part of the site and rather than try to flare this up I thought I would add my view seen as I am closer to the PH brand than most smile

A quick Google search shows this discussion happening in many other places. Some have gone to the trouble of contacting tyre manufacturers for their views:

Goodyear said:
The BTMA is becoming increasingly concerned at the number of cars on British roads where the tyres fitted are too narrow for the wheel rim widths or conversely the wheel rims are too wide for the tyres. (Often referred to as the “Euro Look”) This trend is believed to be a fashion statement, but leads to courts a potentially very hazardous and serious risks into road safety.
Continental said:
In reply to your e-mail regarding the practice of fitting tyres to wide rims, we would strongly recomend against it. We have seen similar photographs of low profile tyres fitted to rims wider than the recomended rim fitment, and would go so far as to say that it's positively dangerous, because the tyre cannot flex as it would under normal conditions, and therefore cannot respond properly when cornering.

Nah. It's perfectly safe. Greendubber said so.

When I see your VW careering towards me with sparks flying from where your stretched tyres once were, I'll do what every other double figure poster does in Readers Cars and mutter 'Nice car mate, that's mint, ignore the haterzzzz'
Until that day it's just another bland eurobox.

I apologise for calling the car ste, that was going too far but I do not like the look and I have serious concerns as to what effect the almost total lack of suspension travel and the stretched tyres must have on the ride and handling. I would have thought it would be close to undrivable on a typical bumpy British B road and that is my main issue with this type of mod, to me you modify a car to improve it not make it worse.

So if we wanted to be rude or offensive we would ask why would you be a member when you have a s**ty S2 cab and an old Range Rover....hardly the typical PH member are you?? You could nearly say you were one of those people that bought a 2CV because you liked the image rather than the fact that its all you could afford!!
