Owned this for a about 12 years now. Mrs940 used it as a daily driver for a couple of years then I started to refit it as a camper and we used it as our wedding car in 2000. We decided recently to get it up and running again and fitted with some seats so we can take it for runs with the kids ( they love it).

Been sat for at least 5 years now so it's taking a bit of effort. Brand new Vega motor done 50 miles in 4 years! Nearly ready for MOT and then looking for some seats to go in the back.

And some pics - fitted the new wheels today so got the camera out!

That is a top class motor in my mind and great that it is back on the road. I remember travelling around the north of Scotland in a transit equivilent but the vag bus is the best looking in my opinion.

Holdsworth? Roof looks like it, My parents had a 1985 one that we went miles in!

Like it, very cool!

Oh yeah, future plans once it's MOT'd.

Seats a priority, also the pop roof is old and ropey so I favour ditching it in favour of a full length sun roof. Front panel has most rust so a new front panel and lose the wheel, then whole respray the same colours.

Using it is the main priority though, the bodywork can wait!

Absolutely hideous on every level and I hate everything about it, but...

There is something about these bloody things that I find strangley appealing cool

I was up until recently working in Devon and commuting up and down the natural stomping ground of the VW camper; the A303, these bloody vans were providing the sort of mobile road irritant usually reserved for the 'Dorchester Pagent MK3' being towed by a 1993 Volvo estate, but every time I saw one I was over-come with a slight feeling of jealousy mad

Nice - is it an original westy? still got the interior?

It looks remarkably straight from the pics of the side - is it a trick of the light or?

Not sure who did the original conversion - layout wasn't great and had been badly wood stained. Roof isn't up to much and as yet I haven't found who made it so I reckon it's time for it to go.

Previous owner restored the bodywork, new floors etc. Used repair panels on corners and doors rather than new and didn't knit them in as I would have liked ( Didn't notice when we bought it ) but it is pretty good for something that's 36 years old now.

Blue paint has microblisters too from spending too much time under a cover last year but you have to be close to see them.

Just plan on using it for the next year then look at some of the bodywork stuff.

The hard shoulder of this nation's motorways would be a dull grey place without VW campers and transporters prettily adorning them.

I have fond memories of these.. As a five year old, I went to the States with me mum to visit my uncle and cousins, and we toured around the North West plains in my Uncles camper, a 2 liter fuel injected model.

I still have the citation he was given for speeding! hehe

And I've no idea how you can think it's not very 'PH', it's an iconic machine!

The family hire a splitty for a week in the summer, it was great but a little slow biggrin

An update:

Set myself the mission of getting this back on the road, been saying that for every year for the last few but this year it's on. I stripped the interior a while back, it was setup as a camper which was no good with 4 kids. After struggling with ideas for seats I picked up some Mini Bus seats from a Brazilian import bus. The door is on the wrong side so the tilt seat would not afford access to the back row but I had different plans.

One row facing forwards and one backwards. Kids love it.

Point where I realised I had a lot to do:

Trial fitting:

Test the car seat and kids might fit

And how it ended up. Pleased with the results.

Next was getting it running, tried a new dizzy but that was faulty. Got it running but the carb was leaking, fortunately the VW bunch are very generous and the guy next to me at work gave me another one. Resorted to getting the experts in to fix it wink

Got there in the end, did some cleaning and undersealing replaced the gear coupler and took it for MOT. Straight through! Very happy! Mainly been using it at weekends and it's slow but the kids love it and it makes others smile.

Ready for a day out

Future plans will be to get the front panel replace and some other bodywork tidied up. But for the summer it's just to use it.
