MK2 Golf GTi 16v Big Bumber Oak Bay Green Jornal (Pic Heavy)

Hi All,

This is my Mrs car, I bought it for her, for her birthday.
After years of driving around in MK2 GTi's when she was younger and moving up to a MK4 GTi Turbo only a few years old and having to sell I decided to get my Mrs back into a Golf, she always wanted a specific one, a MK2 GTi 3 Door Oak Bay Green Big Bumper 16v.

Lucky for me, it was coming up to her big birthday and had no idea what to get her, so decided to look for something that would make her feel her youth again, so on the hunt I went for the GTi. With only two days hard looking I thought I came up short and was getting annoyed, I mentioned my idea to a mate at work who said his mate seen one in sunny Frome (Somerset) on a trading estate, but sadly thats all he knew and his mate told him weeks ago about it.

So after buying a Autotrader and searching online for a local car, all I could find was a 5 door and a high priced 3 door. I took a punt and got a mate to take me to Frome, where cut a long story short, we found the car parked up. Had a look around the car and all seemed well, it was wet so couldnt give the paint a really good going over but for a 20 plus year old car she looked in good shape, couldnt find any rust anywhere!

Called the owner and talked money, had a little drive and agreed a price of £1920 for the Golf.

The car was in for a MOT so couldnt take it straight home.

The Mrs got home from her weekend away and I took her on the Sunday to show her the car, she had no idea what it was until I pulled up (it was parked in a compound behind a wall) and stood stairing at it for a while, she twiged and started crying happy days.

Anyway, eventually got the car home with a few known problems.

Anyway, we have used the car as a dailey as sadly my M3 spun a shell, no problems yet, not the quickest car in the world but goes well enough for her in doors.

Today we removed the rear wheels, cleaned them out, cleaned the inner arch, rempoved any surface rust and painted with waxoil paint to prevent any nasty stuff.

We was happy with the condition under the car, no nasty surprises really and nothing that had us worried.

I like to do this on all my cars, keeps the archs nice and protected, and with this car there is no rust forming up around any of these areas so we are happy.

Things that will be getting sorted.

Alternator replace, whines and annoys me
Full service for peace of mind
Machine Polish
New suspension right the way round
and if I can, find new side trim etc so it looks nice and new

All comments welcome, I will update when we do more to the car

We also cleaned the wheels out

Only did the back end of the car, will do the front next week some time.

I wasnt happy with the results so they will be getting refurbed in the future

OK after many hours and posts with the user rubjonny on golfgtiforum.co.uk i tackled the dash problem.

I removed the front plate and managed to remove the speedo cable from the back of the dash



I left the cable on view and went for a drive to see if I was getting movement from the cable, and I wasnt.

So put that all back together and went under the bonnet, undone the bolt holding the cable into the gearbox and very carefully (making sure I didnt catch the orange cog on the side of the box) pulled it out. Unlucky for me, someone has already been hear and lost the cog in the gearbox

I now have to find a very thin pair of long nosed pliers to get into the box and hopefully pull this mangled cog out, see pics







Just had a email back from German and Swedish to tell me they dont sell the orange cog and I need to go to the dealers last time I went there, he told me they dont sell anything lol. I will go and investigate more and let you all know

also I forgot, D/C'ed the battery for a hour or so to see if this would solve the Rev counter problem and it hasnt so went to put the terminals back on, greased the terminals and found the battery was loose tightened and made sure it was nice and secure again

So I finally got around to finishing the arch work off, didnt paint the fronts as most was covered with plastic, so cleaned out any trapped dirt and washed them down.







Also cleaned the front wheels out, again not that happy, but they was filthy, never seen a set like that before.











After finishing the archs and with this dust coming down from the Icelandic Volcano, she was a little dusty, so I cleaned her Not the best but looks much better and is now ready for some polish/wax tomorrow

















Any comments good or bad welcome. It can only get better if people critisis (sp) her

Well since my last post I have spent a st load of cash on my M3 and she is now back on the road all be it for only a little while


The golf on the other hand has been given back to the Mrs full time, so its been used to get her to work and so, and its been too hot to clean the paintwork so is looking a little upset at the moment.

I know there are a few people from Yeovil on this site, she had someone come up to her at work saying how nice it was, he said he had a MK3 GTi...? Think we seen it and it looks very nice

Off to a BMW show this weekend so not much going to get sorted in the GTi, but plans are

New suspension right the way round
New windscreen as this one has scratchs
Decent tyres
Service, and tinker to try get her running spot on as I dont think its pulling right

Well due to the problems with the M3 and low £££ not much has been completed. Yesterday the golf got a good clean, treated the black plastic bodykit and bumpers with megs tyre dressing!! Amazing stuff! looks stunning, didnt get any pics of it cleaned as we are going to clay/polish and wax her this week so pics then.

Took the head lining out, again no pics, but altho it looks a mess, it looks much better than when it was just hanging down, so at some point will be after a good head lining and someone to fit it, as they are very fragile lol.

Got some photos of them both together as well as we have had loads of nice cars at the same time and never once took photos of them together.

Current items that need fixing

Brakes!! Pretty much a down to the floor job at the moment, told the Mrs not to drive her and use the M3, got it going to the garage tomorrow, its not using any fluid and the discs and pads seem OK? guess there is a air lock of some kind in the system.

Headlining has been removed, looks loads better, thats how bad it was. Got to find a new one and get someone to fit as its very easy to brake.

Speedo still not working, think its a cable and a cog in the earbox, got the cable just not the cog, will get that sorted soon.

Suspension is a little tierd, so that will be replaced with some kind of coil over kit or standard items, not sure yet.

Full service, cambelt change etc

Machine polish and buff as some of the paint is a little flat.

So thats how far we have got with her, any comments welcome. Sorry about all the pics.

Well as I have said the brakes was a problem with the car.

My mrs who has owned three of these cars checked the brake fluid and found it was low, so toped it back up, got to the garage as the pedal was like a sponge, my indy came out and undone another cap and said theres no brake fluid in it!!!! My Mrs only went and put it in the bloody power steering!!! So now its booked in tomorrow to have the power steering drained and the brake leak sorted, brakes work again at the moment now it has fluid lol.

She wont be checking any of the levels again

car is back and all fixed now. Getting a price for getting the dash working. And got a headlining lined up

Looks like a nice original example. Speedo cog is available from the Dealers - cant find part no. at the minute but got one at the garage so will keep you updated.

Good work on cleaning the arches etc, the driver side rear arch is a real dirt trap and will rot the filler neck and inner arch.

I have been buying bits for the car off ebay, managed to get some bargains and hopefully this week they should all be with me.

I recieved the new Leather gear gaitor Saturday so went a head and fitted.

I was surprised how easy this was, thought it was going to be held in there well, but its not.

Everything slipped out nice and easy and it looks loads better

Well obviously I have removed the old one lol, it was a mess, loads of holes etc

Removed the Gear knob, this just screws off.



Removed the black plastic cover and threaded the leather gaitor around the catch on the cover.
Was a little fiddly but took no more than two attempts to get it on!

I went around the gap with a blunt object just to make sure the leather was fully situated in the hole







Then I put the plastic cover back on, went on with ease



Then I put the gear knob back on and tightened up, one thing I found, dont over tighten the gear knob, it starts to push through the top of the gear knob and wont allow the diagram showing which gear your in to sit flat and flush.

I might try and turn it around and see if it frees up some more slack in reverse, but at the moment it looks lovely.

Today the Central Locking drivers door pump arrived, ares had a hole and was causing the central locking to pretty much do what it wanted.

Managed to track one of these down, was hard work.

I removed the door card, removed the old item, and plugged the new one in. Visibily they are different but had the same connectors etc.

Unfortunetly someone else has been at this pump before me and had cut some of the air hose off, after a little play I noticed it does not need the air vac pipe connecected if it is sealed close.

So I screwed a screw into the pipe making sure it was nice and tight, then refitted the cables etc

Connected the power and showin the van pipe sealed



Now putting the door card back together, this might help some of you who are not sure, its dead easy.

Sealed the door, this prevents wet door cards and floor pan



Put the door card on, and adjusted the lock knob and tested the lock again to make sure it did not foul on the door card



Next to check the door card was caught on all the hooks



Put the 4 screws in, two on the internal side of the door, and 2 on the lock side of the door





Next was the door handle to hold the bulk of the card in place





Then the door handle surround



Window winder, most annoying part, the sflat head screw has no depth so hard to do up and easy to round off





Mirror adjusters, should of put these rubbers on before I put the door card on, had to use ascrewdriver to poke all the rubber catch into the door card, annoying!



We are getting shot of these, dont like them one bit, but for now they go back on

Now to put the pump back together in the boot for the central locking



Nearly forgot the surclip to hold the power in place

Lovely wheels and a very clean looking standard example. Always fancied an oak green 16v myself. As you say some sensible mods will make it perfect again but they were so right as standard in the first place that it makes you wonder why people tinker with the exterior. Good work.

cheers lads. It looks lovely so wont be changing its looks. Just want to get some suspension sorted so it handles a little better. So much roll etc.
I am more interested in getting everything working and looking as good as its going to be. As soon i got it up to standard i will be bored and prob sell her.. If the mrs lets me

Good to see you are gradually ironing out all the little niggles. There shouldnt be too many parts if any that are impossible to get hold of, the VW dealers do hold a lot more mk2 parts than they let on and in my expereince only a few of the sales staff know anything about older golfs. Most of the time if you are told a part is on back order/out of stock the people just cant be bothered to look beyond the stock list at their own site!

BTW just how many pics to show a new leather gear gaitor lol

OK been thinking, do you guys think it would ruin the car if I put a 1.8 Turbo 20v Engine in this car? with it being so original and never been modified do you think it would be bad to start now?

The engine we have in her is fine, starts, runs etc and sounds sweet as a nut.

Dont want to do it if its going to ruin the general originality of the car?

Personally I'd stick with the original engine. When I was toying with the idea of getting one there seemed so few good 16v cars available it would be a shame to make one less.

It's too much of a common swap IMHO. If you wanted to do something interesting or more in keeping, you could 'charge the 16v motor (like on the Golf Anni). Or go 16vT
