All things being pretty much equal, VW Polo.

Get whichever is cheapest to buy in good condition and spend the rest having fun and keeping the car on the road.

Ford fiasco! Get a fiesta, I had one for my first car - have a look at my profile, absolutely perfect for a first set of wheels, don't waste more than you have to on your first car.

Have you done an insurance quote on either vehicle?

These days, Insurance cost dictates what car you'll be getting unfortunately.

I had a 1.4 Polo on an S plate(1999) and it was pretty much unbreakable. I didnt service it for 4 years and the only thing that needed replacement in that time was tyres every 2 years and a new set of pads. It wasa brilliant car. Enough punch to be fun but also felt better made than a lot of brand new stuff. If you can get hold of one i would seriously recommend it.

Polo. For that money you should just about be able to get one of the 2000-2002 '6N2' models. By far the best supermini of that era. 1.4 16v and 1.4 TDI best all rounders, 1.0 cheapest on fuel/ insurance but very slow. Safe and reliable choice.

A Polo 1.4 16v is likely to be a killer on insurance. Churchill said 'no, ta' to me at 18. The 1.2s are solid though. Fairly nice interior on the 6N2s.

But also, Fiestas are worth a look as flattotheboards said. 1.25 would be perfect (don't get the 1.3 that I got unless you really need to save money - they are bulletproof engines but very slow).

I wouldn't put anyone in a Cinq. A friend had an accident in one a few years ago. It pretty much disintegrated, and the engine ended up where front seat passenger would have been!

Out of the pick between a polo and corsa, the Polo is a better quality car in every possible way. However, you should weigh this up against whichever car you happen to be looking at is better kept/better value. No point in buying a £1500 polo if it isn't well kept, when you see a corsa thats better kept for £1100.

if you can manage to find a good example, get a Lupo.
Having said that, a polo (1litre), or perhaps a yaris would suffice. A clio aswell.
the usual small/supermini hatchbacks to consider, fiesta, corsa, polo, seat ibiza.
If insurance cost is a big issue for you, I suggest you go onto parkers.co.uk look at cars and there insurance groups, so you can get an idea of which trim levels/engine sizes are in what insurance groups. get various quotes and see which car works out cheaper for you on insurance.

With this in mind, you can weigh up whether you will buy that expensiver car thats cheap on insurance, or that cheap car thats slightly more on insurance etc..

I had one of these as my first ever car. Insurance was steep, though not catastrophic. The brakes are ste, though.

Well a good incentive to keep it rubber side down between the hedge rows theN.
What i drive is less substantial than a cinq and considerable quicker no problems if you don’t bend it. Spend the extra money that you were going to tart it up with on your driving like the IAM for a start and you will be fine and should never end up in that position. CARS DONT CRASH THEM SELF PEOPLE CRASH CARS!

Mm.. Not fair really.

I didn't crash my car, but the lady behind who drove into me did a good job of it. Not amount of IAM is going to stop that.

Very true but a IAM course or the like will not do any harm and people going on about nanny state rubbish again that this car will kill you and so is rubbish most of the time if thats the case and you want to wrap your self up in cotton wool buy a volvo or a sabb most small cars in your budget are as bad as each other from a safty aspect but being 17 years old i dont think this is the most prudent thought in you mind go get something fun enjoy it and stay safe look after your self and driving and you will get lot out of it.

Black ice, sub 30mph.
Maybe IAM would of helped, could of happened to anyone though.
Ok, no need to wrap yourself up in a Volvo/Saab. But surely you'd want something a little more solid than Polystyrene.

Either way. You'd of thought the car had been travelling at 60plus from the state of it. Not less than half that.
If he had been carrying any passengers, they would of all been dead.

For anyone to consider these, for a first car or otherwise, is mad.
