Sold my MK3 as I was bored with it, the idea was to put some money towards a new camera and buy a cheap £600 runabout.
Was hoping for something interesting and fun to drive (the MK3 wasnt much fun to drive, very low so scraped everywhere) but thought that was doubtful with my budget.

Browsing Ebay at old hot hatches and I came across this MK2 Golf GTI 16v in Jade Green.
Its a big bumper model, the paint isnt the best but being a 21 year old car I didnt expect it to be perfect, the main thing is there is very little rust!
Going to give the car a full detail this weekend to put some shine back into it.
Its been lowered sensibly and sits on Corrado Sebring alloys, also has Corrado front seats which are more supportive than the usual MK2 items.
Came with a massive folder of service history, reciepts and every MOT from new.

Oh and the original 1.8 16v lump has been swapped for a 2.0 16v from (Im told) an Audi Coupe.
So its plenty of fun to drive!!
Looking forward to bringing it along to some PH runs.

It came in just over my £600 budget but not by much.

Anyway, a couple of pics.....

Looks good, always liked the big bumpered mk2s.

What are all the little pipes that go from above the airbox to the inlet manifold and beyond?

I have absolutely no idea!!!

The guy I bought it off didnt know much about it either but when I asked if it was an ABF engine he pointed at those and said that it was a different injection system.
Ah well, it runs fine, drives brilliantly with no bangs or funny noises and is quick enough to annoy anyone who just see's it as an old knackered F reg Golf so Im very happy!

Just had it checked by some people in the know and it isnt a 2.0, its the standard 1.8 16v KR engine.
Pretty pleased actually, less messing about trying to find parts and shows just how well that engine has aged!!

I was going to say engine bay looks remarkably similar to my unmolested 16v.

Bargain!

The metallic pipes are fuel lines, the 16v uses a Bosch K-Jet injection system.

Also F reg won't be a big bumper model, you can tell from the lack of hazard switch on the steering column and the side strips. Bit bumper ones are thinner and have gti logos on them.

Nice Golf and a bargain too!! Enjoy.

I paid £800 for a J reg GTI 8v three weeks ago and it's such a good car for next to no money.

Not bad for the cash. The Sebring alloys never much suited the Rallye but I think they look very nicely understated on a standard GTI.

Bit of an update:

Not really done anything to this since buying it, been having too much fun driving it driving

I havent even cleaned it yet!

Heaters decided to pack up Monday morning so me and lad at work been messing with it trying to get some warmth in the interior again and he said he thought it didnt look like a standard KR engine so we did some investigating and using a 4 post ramp and an inspection light we found what I was hoping we would find, a big 2.0 stamped on back of the block.

So its a 6A engine lifted from an Audi Coupe.

From what Ive read this afternoon it is a common thing for the KR cams to be put in the 6A engine and this gives around 170bhp.

No way of knowing if this has been done to mine really without putting it on a rolling road but to be honest it feels like it, its definitely quicker than my ABF engined MK3 was.

Really loving it at the minute.

I thought it looked like a KR head matched to a 2.0 abf bottom end. Real world power will be more likely around 150bhp. For the weight of the car, they really do go rather well. A friend has this conversion in his MkII GTI.

I think this will be for sale soon, I really dont like it.
Always wanted a MK2 and now Ive got one I wish I had never sold my MK3.

If I feel the same in Feb after my holiday then its going to be sold.

Just little things really.

I think its just a case of it feels like the cars I was driving 12 years ago when I passed my test, I should really have moved up to something nicer by now and this car is a step down from my previous ones.

It just doesnt make me smile.

If funds permit i think you should keep the mk2 for the summer and buy a 2nd car for a daily through the winter.

I struggled to live with my mk2 valver over last years winter so bought a mk3 anniversary which makes for an easier drive, and far superior heater!

However cant wait to liberate the mk2 from the garage when the roads dry up, in my opinion a far better drive, laods of fun in the dry.

I would, it was a bargain at £600 so it doesn't owe you anything.

(However I am a self confesed 'hoarder')
