I have a question about these cars after watching loads of tv shows.

Now they seem to chuck in 500+ bhp engines, is there any real point to this? or as they are mostly auto is it only putting like 200 out at the wheels? Does the power make them un-drivable, or do you mostly just cruise about in them, randomly stabbing the throttle for a second or two?

Also, they have excellent full suspension on, do any people track these cars, or are them never pushed at all, its just about style and show?

They look great, and i love watching the shows on tv, I just wonder if they ever get used the way they are designed?

I know a few hot rodders. Some make them with big lazy v8's but they only have about 200hp as it is just for cruising around, it's mainly for sound and looks. The others make them as powerful as thier pocket can take and visit the drag strip, posting up relatively fast times. Some really powerful ones even do wheelies despite bieng front engined. The reason why they are not ussually tracked is because the chassis and brakes and sus is not really suitable for the handling and weight of them, they are better in a straight line.

As a born and bread hotrodder, may I just correct a few of your assumptions? First of all the auto in a lot of these hotrods do not take anything like 300hp away from the engine.

As for them being un-driveable, that is nonsense as well. I have driven my rod all over Europe as do many other hotrodders.

Some of these cars are very quick as they tend to be light weight and have a lot of power.

Being as hotrodding grew out of dry lakes racing and drag racing in the 40's and 50's these cars have manly been about acceleration rather than racing around a track.

The build quality on hotrods is generally very high with the undersides of the car being of equal quality to the topside. The show thing is a big part of the scene, but so is the engineering that goes behind the looks.

Cheers, I was just wondering, in most cases the chassis are basically two bars, and the cab sits on top (bolted on), with all the extra power does this not twist at all? As modern cars use the entire shell to combat flex.

Monocoque (body/chassis)
Ladder Chassis & Backbone chassis (2 chassis rails w/body bolted to the chassis rails)

All designs will twist by a certain amount- torsional rigidity, how much they differ by, i'm not sure & it will certainly depend on each individual design.

Is this the same base car as the Coddington built ZZ Top Eliminator?

Voted, should be red though and you should always wear a suit whilst driving, cause the girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man...
