Hi guys,

I know this isn't the most exotic car on the forum, but it's my project/daily driver for the next year or so wink

I recently bought a '91 VW Polo GT. It's replacing my '98 Polo 1.4 16v which I had running on CBR600 bike carbs. Made a lovely noise but wasn't really practical for cold weather, as I didn't fancy dealing with carb icing all winter!

On to the GT...

It's just ticked over to 76k and is spotless underneath. I was really surprised when we got it up on the ramps.

First job was to get a Lambda boss welded in to the stainless 4 branch.

I also fitted a 300mm OMP steering wheel.

And these finally turned up yesterday after they sat in a hub in Germany for 10 days!

Got them fitted last night but don't have any pictures yet. It's only a sensible 60/40 drop, so nothing too major.

Plans

I've got a PPS Stage 3 subframe on its way to help cure the vagueness of the suspension setup.
I'll also be fitting a 256mm brake upgrade using Vectra calipers, carriers, and pads, Mk2 Golf GTi 16v discs.

Also, next year will see an Eaton G40 lump being put in there biggrin

Really nice! Always liked these since I was into VW's a few years ago. My neighbour and best mate had a white 'D' Reg 1.3 polo in the 'estate' style which he lowered, put Mk1 golf gti wheels on and a straight through home made exhaust. Good times!

Cheers biggrin It feels like a go kart compared to the other cars I've had! First one I've owned without power steering as well. I love how there's so much more feedback coming through the wheel.

Quick update. The new suspension is fitted now and has settled nicely. I've got a bit of an issue with how the exhaust was mounted so I'll be taking a look at getting it moved up more into the car today.

Blurry pic of the exhaust/ground interface. There's only ~5cm clearance!

Haven't seen one of these for years.

Looks so tidy, steerign wheel looks good.
Engine transplant next then? That's costly i assume?

Cracking little cars, looks really nice. Have you found the various polo forums, very helpful. Get yourself one of the chips for £40, definately makes a difference. Just if you can help it don't go for 14" wheels as they scrub if you drive a bit enthusiastically, without arch mods (found out the hard way).

Looks very tidy, make sure you check the battery tray for rust as its very common.

This thing just loves the abuse. Feels much more solid than my other Polo was! Engine wise, the plan is to buy a G40, swap the engine into this, put the GT engine into the G40 shell and sell it on again. Cheapest way to get hold of a block smile

Mike: That looks in really good nick! What did you use to polish that? I need to get my DA on it as soon as the weather clears up a bit.

Matt: Yeah, I'm on ClubPolo and have just joined Polo3. Been on ClubPolo for a while with my 6n.

I'm running 14" Passat steelies at the moment (mini G60s) and have got some Steffan BCWs to go on in Spring. Not sure if the 8s will fit on the back without work, but I'll just get another pair of 7s if not biggrin

Cheers

cool little pocket rocket. I have one to, id recomend a PoloAce chip for it, smooths the midrange, improves throttle response, increases the rev limiter to 6800prm thus makes 2nd an 3rd great fun!

8K chip doesn't give you anymore than a 6800rpm one would!

Your better off with a PPP frame.

Did I hear you right? Your buying a Polo G40 to take the engine out, put it into your GT, then put the GT engine into the G40 shell and sell it? What the hell for, bar ruining another rare G40?!

Only worth having the 8k if you have a heavily worked on head with a 300* cam or something equally lairy.

I dont think there is any point buying an entire G40 to do the conversion, its easier to pick up a g40 block as its really just the internals + oil feed from sump you will need if you intend to go down the eaton route.

I used to run a Schrick 272 amoungst other mods allowing my GT to make 110hp (still a 1.3) and it would keep pace with stock GTI 8v Mk2 golfs.

The thing is you had to get used to driving it ignoring the markings on the rev counter an just keep going until you could feel the power tail off then it was straight to next gear an 4k+ it would keep pulling. If anything it had very similar characterstics to a 16v.

il dig out the full spec but in a nutsell
- shrick cam
- ported /polished head + throttle body
- 4 branch manifold
- golf GTI 8v AFM with modified air box and intake to throttle body pipe
- polo ace chip

a friends made 90bhp @ the clubpolo rolling road day with an 8k chip, decat and cone filter!

steel blue squareback, must've been the 2009 RR day i reckon.
