Hey Guys,

Been registered for a while thought I would add some pics up of my car.









Pretty much standard apart from K&N Induction kit, future plans for her include a few select bits from Forge & a Re map.

Apologies for the crap iPhone pictures! Will have to get some decent photos done with the DSLR when the weather picks up a bit!

Only a Forge FMIC, Intake pipe, Split R and a Milltek followed by a remap.

Thats all really, want to keep the outside standard and just a few more ponies out of the engine!

Tidy example of a nice car. Everyone knows that the Mark IV is easily the best shape.

Looks lovely. I really like mk4 golfs. My mother has had a 20v GTI for what seems like forever and the thing just goes on and on. They're very nicely finished too.

Is it a 1.8t? it seems to be missing the red "i" from the gti badge.

I take it it just has the standard recaros without leather?

I have had a few friends with mk4 gti`s and v6`s and they have a lovely interiors when specced with the leather recaros, but they really do have a few fauts/issues. Nice to see one that hasn`t been ruined yet.

I believe the red 'i' indicated diesel - I had a 150bhp diesel GTi from new in 2002 and loved it. Sports seats were standard, Recaros weren't.

Swapped to a V70 in 2004 due to size of family, but would merrily have my GTi back now as I'm often the only one in the car, although the Volvo is supremely comfortable for long distance work and just keeps on going.

I dunno you know, I thought it was missing some red too. The red on the Diesels is usually in the TDi badge (a red DI indicating a PD lump)

Unless the red I is only for a GTi 180 and this is a 150?

It may have changed later but in 2002 the red 'i' always indicated diesel - whether TDi or GTi. It's possible that some owners liked the look of this and added red i's themselves, or more likely that you have been seeing diesel GTi's and not realised - the cars looked identical apart from this. (Of course they sounded very different, but still pretty quiet on the inside at least)

I am pretty sure 1.8 gti 150`s should have the red "i" i know for a fact that some came with it from new anyway, it was the 2.0 that did not have it, i worked at Trade Sales when they were 1st released.

There was no "diesel GTI" there was a "GT TDI" though.

I am also pretty sure all the turbos came with recaros too with leather being an expensive option.

I am sure there are lots of vag fans who will be along to verify this shortly.

As far as I know the red 'i' is for the 6 speed 180bhp gti, mine is the 150 1.8 t version 5 speed. Mine also doesn't have the recaro seats but they look almost identical?

Just need a proper VAG geek to come along and more than likely correct us all!!

Only had the car for a month or so but am loving it so far, build quality is immense compared to my old punto hehe.

Sorry but there most definately was a diesel GTI, one of my mate's was asked when he had been driving a year by his old man if he wanted a GTI to which obviously he answered yes. Within 2 weeks he had the anniversary model mk4 Golf GTI sat on his driveway with the 150BHP diesel engine. Outside of the car was all badged up as a GTI not GT TDI and there were no give a ways as to the engine until the ignition was started and the exhaust note. Even the paperwork was recorded as GTI which surprised me.

TBH I think the colourings of badges made no difference, typical VAG fitting whatever was laying around in the parts bin at the time as I've seen so many variations (I looked into buying one and still do everynow and then!)

My car was badged and sold to me as a GTi, but the registration & insurance documents were something like Golf GT PD TDI or some rearrangement of that lettering.

A quick google seems to suggest that the red 'i's turned up for various reasons so I may well be mistaken about their significance.

ETA: It definitely wasn't an anniversary edition. If I'd done my research and known it was coming I'd have ordered the car 3 months later.

You are correct, i completely overlooked the anniversary edition, the only diesel one badged as a gti, but also quite a rarity.

When it comes to the red "i" there was certainly some method to how they were badged though.

Where is a vag fanboy when you need one?

I had one of these, they are nice so long as you don't expect it have sharp, nimble handling. They drive more like a mini-barge IMO, mine had about 90k miles on original shocks and the ride was great.

One thing I have noticed on more than one of these engines is on a cold startup the idle is quite high and sounds very rough for about 30 seconds, followed by a "psssh" and then everything's normal. Apparently this is the secondary air pump becoming a bit knackered.

I had a MKIV V6 4Motion Golf and the recurring ignition coil pack failures (6 in 18 months plus a blown CAT) did it for me.

The only good thing I have to say about it was the trade-in I got........that's when I went over to the dark side biggrin
