Looks like a nice example. The miltek is definatley worth it especially with a 3 inch downpipe and decat.

Mine came with the red "i" and its a 150bhp 5 speed. Seems that the earlier agu cars had the red "i" and im sure some others.

Also im not too sure about the split-r. Ive heard a few bad things about it. I went for the 007p myself and its great. You still get pretty much the same sound as the split-r (providing you have an open air intake) without the power loss of the atmospheric valve. Almost half the price too.

Mrs FB has a 2003, MkIV 180bhp GTi and it has a red i. I think the 150 models had the red i prior to the introduction of the 180.

I can imagine! Its painfull on my wallet doing 20miles in the GTI. Out of interest what MPG are you getting on your commute? Im currently getting around 25mpg, thats pretty gentle driving as the car hasnt really warmed up by the time I get to work and its mainly stop start in traffic.

Now I'm remembering why I bought the 55mpg diesel GTi... I covered 60,000 miles in 2 years and loved every minute of it! Suspect the mpg would have been higher if I wasn't enjoying myself so much.

Nice car, notlong got a mk4 again for myself and I really do like it.

Badges are what SHOULD be on a mk4 rear end but some slip through the net

Petrol

GTI 20v & 2.0 8v are all silver badges
GTI 20v Turbo 150bhp early cars have red I later cars all silver
GTI 20v Turbo 180bhp introduced in 2002 and had red I
GTI 20v Turbo Anniversary all silver GTI script with "correct" GTI typeface

Diesel

90 bhp Non PD TDi All silver TDI badge
110 bhp Non PD TDI silver TD red I
100 bhp PD TDI All silver TDI
115 bhp PD TDI Silver T red DI
130 bhp PD TDI Silver T red DI
150 bhp PD TDI all red TDI
150 bhp PD TDI Anniversary all silver GTI script with "correct" typeface

Some 150 BHP TDIs can also be badges as GTIs this is usually the case if they have GTI spec 16/17" wheels, wood trim etc

I hope this clears the badge queries up, and as said some can slip through the net being badges wrongly

My mate (who has a GT TDI 130 which was badged as a GTI) told me that you could specify at the dealership what badge you wanted. I suppose it equally could just be someone slapping a badge on it. Weren't the 2.0 GTIs eventually badged as 2.0s? The whole thing is a clusterfk.

Just trawling through this thread and found this and might be able to offer some sort of help! maybe
I am a 20VT owner with a red "i" but mine is a 150 standard, a little bit more now ;-)
All original 1.8T (AUM,AGU) were fitted with the slightly larger k03s turbo until late 2001/2002, 5 speeds, these all had the red "i" when the other engine models were introduced with the smaller Ko3 turbo, non s they came with silver i as standard with the option to have it, all other 1.8,2.0 were silver as standard!
As regards to the Anni's the chap that got an anni diesel from his dad would of been able to tell it was a diesel prior to starting the engine if he went round to the back of the car, petrol anni's have a visible tail pipe and diesel anni's have the discrete one. Always one to look out for at the lights!!!
GTI badging "font" is different on the anni's also and all silver. obvious sign of miss labelling is look out for the chumps with red letters and orange repeater rear light clusters!!!

WillVWT:

AGU is k03 cable throttle
AUM is k03s drive by wire throttle
AUQ (180bhp) is k03s introduced on the anniversary then all GTis after.

You can tell a 150bhp from a 180bhp by the 5 or 6 speed box.

The Recaro seats were also changed to emblemless versions on the later cars.

you cant half tell from the 150 AGU to the AUQ's 180, had an 150 A3 was very poor

Nice to drive when remapped though, nice and smooth power delivery.

Just a shame the K03 doesnt have any more to offer...but thats the joy of being able to bolt a KO3S on instead...or a hybrd smile

AGU has the large port head too which is nice for when a bigger turbo is whacked onto it smile

Loved mine with cream heated leather Recaro's.

Mine was a T-reg and had the silver 'I' in GTI, I'm not sure what was meant by the red one.
