I interested in this project,

We've got a defender 90 for trashing about the farm, you've got tempted to fix it up so it can go back on the road. The rear of chassis needed a bit of welding at its last mot (3 years ago) so now it just lives in the fields.

Thanks for the colour suggestions. I am starting to think of more modern colour schemes but don't
want something that will look old quickly as I have no plans to ever sell it. Currently thinking of Avus Blue, or Hot chocolate (metallic brown) or something similar. One thing I am going to keep is the hard top.

I managed to get a bit more done on Sunday. I removed the N/S wing and door. The wing was straightforward however the door was a pain because the hing bolts where badly rusted, so out came the magic spanner also know as the angle grinder. I think that I will be needing some more cutting disc's!!!

I had to push the 90 out of the garage so that I could sweep up all of the mud and rust so I took some snaps.

The next part of dismantling is going to be the back part of the 90. I need to sell a little MX-5 in the other side of the garage first to make some more space.

bit of a tip.... it's much easier to drill off the heads of the hinge bolts than using an angle grinder.

It's how I replaced mine at the weekend.

That's great they could be identical twins, they certainly have the same problems.

You got to keep the blue and the county stripes. My mum used to have one just like that!

I want to keep the stickers down the side but thinking of painting them silver if I go with a modern blue. There are a number of other things that I need to consider first.

Is it worth putting a newer rear axle on with disc brakes?

yes it is... unless you have a heavy duty salisbury rear axle

Disco 1 axles are more or less a direct bolt on replacement and are fitted with disks all round.

They are cheap and plentiful as there is plenty of terminal MOT failures about

Do they have the 24 spline drive shafts?

Really stupid question but how on earth do you get the security wheel nuts off? boxedin The ones that look/feel like they are made of thin tin? Cant find anything in the landy that gives a clue and don't want to muck them up bodging them off by trial and error.

All discovery series 1 and 2 had 24 spline diffs and half shafts

All range rover classic from 1994 on had 24 spline

Thanks jbi. I have been told that it is worth changing the axles for this reason alone.

They are much stronger than the 10 spline for sure

They won't be original, hence nothing in the manual. If you don't have the right 'key' for them you can buy a socket set like THIS that will grip onto whatever bit of the nut you can get it onto.

As far as colour goes, I'd go for the metallic grey with satin black details and rims.

Classic dark green- can't go wrong. Although I don't think it's look too bad in those standard colours with a spit polish and some new stickers.

Hmm think they might be these:

If so, I assume the tin bit is a cap and the lock nut is underneath. Bugger.

Yeah the tin bit pops off with a little plastic tool but should come off with pilers or a flat screwdriver. You'll need a gripper socket to undo the bit underneath. I presume you've looked behind your seats and under the seat bases for any tools? Normally they'd be left with the jack and wheel brace.
