1995 Jaguar XJ6 (barge alert!)

I've only gone and bought a Jag!
I'm now the slightly dazed owner of a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 3.2 'Sport'. After giving Riggers a hard time over the many merits of the Ford Mondeo ST24 in the SOTW feature, I think I need a lesson in practising what I preach.
I expressed a desire to chop in my ST24 for something small for my g/f to use for work, which would then leave me open to getting something cheap and barge-tastic to drive around in until I was bored with it. It had been for sale up the road from my parents gaff and my Dad had put me onto it, and to cut a long story short(ish) I've done it the wrong way round and now have a rather large Jaguar sitting on my parents drive until I can secure a parking permit, an ST24 to shift and no car for Miss/Ms IROC-Z.
It's done 118k and I paid £850. The last owner had been pretty scrupulous about the mechanics but unfortunately not quite so fussy with the cosmetics. It needs a little tidying but nothing a couple of weekends hard work can't fix. Already fixed a broken n/s door mirror, removed a horrible 1990's mobile phone kit and given it a damn good clean inside and out. All the electrics work including the climate control with the exception of the radio (which is now displaying CODE after I was fiddling around behind the dash) and the electric aerial. No great shakes, I will probably install a suitably sombre looking aftermarket unit and get the Jag one working later on. I don't have the radio code before anyone asks.
Oh yes, and I couldn't stop myself and bought a XJR front grill, so I'll soon be a member of the mis-badged cars club, or should that be miss-grilled cars? My Dad seems to think this money would have been better spent on front wishbone bushes, but what does he know?
So, at 'kilometre zero' the jobs to do are thus;
Remove flaking coach lines (in progress)
Fit aftermarket radio and new aerial
Respray rear bumper and straighten out chrome strip
Attend to minor rust along bottom of driver's door.
None of these jobs are mega urgent and just waiting until the start of April to get it taxed!

I love it and (touch wood) its been utterly reliable and is fantastic to drive.

Liking those sport wheels! :jealous: I think mine must be a fairly basic 'sport'. Does yours have cruise control? I love it and (touch wood) its been utterly reliable and is fantastic to drive.

Mine has got the same interior combination as yours, I much prefer the darker wood.
The interior is in fairly good condition but the driver's seat is very worn, but the dashboard and general trim responded very well to a good scrub. I'll get better pictures this weekend, weather permitting.

Thanks . I don;t suppose you know what might be stopping me from being able to select the CD changer? The cd changer is powered up but pressing the tape/cd button has no effect!PM me if you have any questions whilst you are fixing it up.

Well, they look better than mine! I'm not a fan of the big profile tyres. I've been forbidden from buying different wheels for it because apparently I do that with EVERY car I buy. No cruise on mine, the only thing I wish it had to be honest. The rest of the inside is OK, but with wear on the seat, like yours!

Yes I was rather miffed when I discovered it didn't have cruise control but accidentally discovering the trip/fuel computer was a pleasant suprise.
Central locking issue sounds like the solenoid inside the door isn't activating? Try taking out the umbilical connection between the door and the body and spraying some electrical contact cleaner (not WD-40) on the contacts. I suspect you'll probably have to take the door card off so you can see what's going on, or not as the case may be, when you try to unlock it.

The tape deck works but when you press 'CD' nothing happens. The CD changer itself appears to have power and is connected to the radio. I have bought a facia adaptor kit and plan to install a Blaupunkt single DIN radio which I've got spare, but I'd like to get it working so I can put it back to stock if I can.

Got it taxed today and done around 50 miles so far of quite gentle driving, I reset the trip computer and average consumption is 21.5mpg and climbing. On a 60mph cruise the instantaneous fuel readout says around 30mpg.
Fitted my XJR grill today and it looks just the ticket!
Any joy with the CD changer? In my experience it could be one of two things:
- The lead from the stereo which goes into the CD changer isn't in correctly - try taking it out and putting it back in again. It may be that it is the end which goes into the back of the head unit that isn't in correctly - but it is a pain to check this as you need to take out the "ski slope"
- The CD changer is the wrong model and is incompatible with the head unit. Does the CD changer say Jaguar in it, or is it an Alpine model?
The iPod FM tramsmitters work well with the head unit, and are a good solution as you csn keep the standard head unit. You need to set the iPods EQ to bass reduction, though. I was sceptical at first, but it sounds good, and even my audiophile mate was impressed.

Yes and no! I've swapped the factory Jaguar radio for a Blaupunkt head unit with MP3/USB capability simply because it's more versatile and suited to my requirements. I bought a facia adaptor which mimics the curved facia of the factory radio and it looks pretty good. It certainly doesn't spoil the factory look which was my main concern. The factory radio has at least two faults. A) It doesn't appear to recognise the CD changer and B) It's not putting out the 12v trigger out the electric aerial. I nearly spent £50 on a recon aerial assembly but when I plugged in the aftermarket radio it sprung into life first time.
I've had all the 'ski-slope' out to remove a mobile phone kit and change the radio and I did fiddle with the cd changer plug etc. The CD changer is an Alpine unit.
I have an ipod FM transmitter in my Camaro and my work van and I personally find them a right PITA!

They are certainly lots of car for very little money and the X300 engines are bulletproof. This is the one I had in 2008, a 1995 XJ3.2 Sport. I only had it for about 4 weeks, the wife didn't like it. I do prefer the Penta alloys, from the XJR I think?
