I just received a phone call from my local OPC. Apparently, Porsche has issued a recall notice on some DFI 997s for warranty replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump. The official OPC line is Porsche is 'concerned' that the 'quality of the pumps wasn't up to scratch' on certain cars (mine included) and are therefore replacing them FOC. Symptoms are bad starting and rough running / reduced power.

But why, I'm asking myself, issue a recall if there's no issue other than rough running or difficulty starting the car? These could be dealt-with on an individual basis and let's face it, Porsche isn't given to issuing recalls (it let plenty of engines explode due to IMS bearing failure for example, but no recall). No - I think it must be more serious to spur Porsche into doing free 'repairs'. Call me cynical, but I'm wondering if the pumps are leaking fuel into the engine bay if they fail/start to fail. Hmmmm, just near all that hot exhaust plumbing!! That would certainly explain Porsche doing something about it......

I'm all for conspiracies but I'm not seeing it here.........
Unless of course they are going to sneak in a second setup to spray in the heads to prevent build up on the DI valves smile

OT - in 1989 I was given a brand new XR2i as a company car, i used it for one day then the fuel pump failed - 12 weeks later the car was returned to me and guess what happened the very next morning - same again - never saw that car again - I was 20-something and GUTTED!

Not heard anything from my OPC, do you have the recall detail Ian? i.e model year affected etc..

Just had the call from Bolton OPC, model year affected 09 and 10. Getting done next week.

Well they put a new fuel pump in and it started to leak immediately, funny really as they said there was nothing wrong with the old one.

Hi! My apologies but no, unfortunately I don't have details of all the cars involved in the recall. Bolton only told me it was '09 and '10 cars and it was a 'quality issue'. The service guy at Bolton also said it was perfectly OK to have mine done when the car's being serviced next month, so it doesn't look like a serious or immediate problem.

Not sure about having my working pump replaced with one of the new leaky ones though.... smile

Well seen as how we use the same OPC better to wait a bit until they get some new fuel pumps in! wink

My 2009 gen 2 C4SC is in for an off-schedule service and to get a roof problem fixed.

While it's there, the PDK and engine management software have both been updated and I just had an email from the service manager saying that the high pressure fuel pump will be replaced as well, as part of this recall.

Update, the replacement fuel pump was fine but the existing fuel lines wouldn't seal properly, so new ones order.
