Looking at some recent asking (and selling) prices, it seems like values of 968s have bottomed out and may even be on the rise.
I'd be grateful for anyone's views on this, especially our learned friends in the trade
I admit I have a vested interest as I need to sell mine (classified ad here: www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=24858&s=111)
I'm asking £12k which seems cheap compared to dealers at £17k, but then I see another red '92 on Autotrader for £9k... please tell me the cheap ones are dogs!

...the cheap ones may also be very well maintained high-milers with not a whiff of pedigree chum about them. Face it, high milers are always harder to shift, as everyone wants and can usually find a low mileage example whatever the vehicle, hence they are priced lower. The old addage - overall condition not miles springs to mind.

£17K for any 968 is crazy!!!
As said previously what are you getting for the extra money compared to a late 944 S2??
A gearbox with an extra gear, and mad ratios??
Always thought they were poor value for money, however as the saying goes "theres a man for everything" and somebody buys them.

I won't try to debate the relative merits of the two - let's just say I agree the S2's a good car (my brother has one) and I can't explain why it's so undervalued.
Back to the original point though, ie are 968s edging upwards, here's a couple of examples:
-94 Sport sold at Hartech (www.hartech.org.uk/Cars/m281%20awt%20iris%20blue%20968%20sport.pdf). ok, £16995 is the asking price not the selling price but I know from experience they're not open to much haggling
-94 Sport, private sale, 80k-ish miles, sold for £14500
-92 Coupe at Shirley's of Meriden (www.shirleys-garage.co.uk/Cars%20For%20Sale.htm), asking £14995
-94 Sport at Autobahn, sold, asking price was £14995
These are definitely a couple of grand more than last year IMO.

those resale prices look good to me being a sport owner but ive seen similar cars advertised for 2-3k below as well
i'll stick my neck on the block and suggest that 968's 'look' more like modern porsches, they share a few styling details with 993's and those have held up amazingly well (unfortunately )
on paper at least the extra gear and 240bhp (which most know is optimistic), widespread press coverage of the 968CS but not the 944 as well as it being just within that 10yr old barrier all add up to the 1st time buyer (like me)
no question a 944 (especially a good turbo) are better value in pure dynamic terms but then is a 993 worth 10k more than a 964?

Yes.
I agree that the 968 looks more modern than a 944 and I'd buy one over a 944 if both were priced the same. To my mind 968s have been overpriced for some time now and are overdue for a dive. The reason values are still high is that they are still within the arena of the higher priced specialist retailer - no names no pack drill. I predict that once Boxsters fall to £15k, the specialists will drop the 968 and its value will fall even further - All IMHO of course.
The CS is a specialist car and should always be viewed as such when being bought and sold.

just have a feeling i might be waiting long as they havent really budged for the past 2 yrs
youre probably right about the fact the specialists drive up prices but ive never seen a specialist stock 968's and not 944's, most usually have them side by side
also dont see how a mid-engined convertible could really drive into a front engined coupes market when theyve become pretty emotive buys at that age

i think because proper inspections are near essential and expected on even specialist supplied cars it makes private buys much more sense and therefore the car more accessible than i mightve thought
wont be looking seriously for a while as im still enjoying the 968 but hopefully good 60-70k mile 993's will be comfortably within my range then

Interesting thread this, particularly the comments about mileage expectations. It looks like despite Henry F's best efforts we do generally have a problem with higher miles (myself included if I'm honest). I'm interested in how much people think higher miles knocks off value. My CS is currently a weekend toy and has a sensible 76k on the clock with FSH. I have an option coming up to make it my daily driver which is quite appealing, but I do have concerns about how quickly mileage will scrub value off it. What do you think, and are there mileage break points (eg 100k)which do particular damage to desirability and value ?

GR4 - A high mileage CS may be a very hard car to sell for anything approaching good money. A buyer will expect a chunk of that mileage to be on-track after all. If it were my car, I'd let it go and buy something for my daily drive, or if you can afford it, keep the CS as a second car.

Funny reading some of these posts - you'd get the impression punters only want Club Sports. From a personal point of view, I expressly wanted a standard Coupe for it's more comfortable ride and better equipement levels seeing as I tend to do longer drives, but not track events. There may be more demand for CS/Sport models but at the same time there is definite demand for the Coupe and thus will appeal to those looking for one. To imply that you might as well run your standard car to the moon and back as nobody wants them is frankly boks.

i usually see claims of 100kg weight difference between CS and coupe, my 968 manual says 50kg, useful but not transforming on a 1300+kg car
put 20mm lowered springs (same dampers) and 17's on a Coupe and the mechanicals are CS spec
i guess any improvement is a bonus but the 968 will always be slightly underpowered so surely a modded 944T makes more sense for a track machine
another questionable opinion im sure but i reckon some of the 964RS halo has rubbed onto the CS making them more popular than they might have been
