Bought my 987 from this chap a few years ago and he was brand new, wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

Ad says 18" wheels but these don't look like any standard 18s I've seen.

Still a few days to run but it might stay in poverty range.
Sold for £8700

Compared to others around that seems like the buyer overpaid. Cage and seat aside there's no mention of a y other track ready mods. Somebody must have liked the colour scheme.

Yeah, thought it was a bit of an oddball. Maybe there are things done they forgot to mention as it does look like it sits quite low.

Definitely lower than a factory car. Just seems odd to choose a 2.7. Wouldn't have been cheap to respray it, fit the cage and do whatever suspension work has been done. Starting with a 3.2 would not have been much more expensive.

OK, still not going to be a rocket ship, but few if any real downsides to going with the 3.2 and you get upgraded brakes along with a chunk more power and torque. And a lightened 3.2 would be reasonably nippy.

Yep, that doesn't seem like a good buy.

The seller mentioned in the comments that it had a 2.7L swap (from 2.5L) and it had been raced previously, so the buyer potentially knew what they were getting that wasn't advertised.

On the other hand, its cheap compared to this...

£14k!

Hi guys, bit of a good news/bad news update on my 986.

I had a nasty clunking noise from the front suspension that didn't get any better no matter how hard I ignored it. I had all sorts of expensive thoughts running through my head. GOOD NEWS - A set of front drop links later, and we have a nice cheap fix and the car is back to its old self. smile

BAD NEWS - my driver's window isn't dropping as it should when I move the door handle. It makes all the right noises (so the switch is obviously working and telling the window to drop) but there is nothing more than the smallest twitch from the glass itself. Is there an obvious thingy somewhere in the door that is likely to have broken/come adrift, or is the mechanism for dropping the window all hidden away in the motor and just controlled electronically? Any advice anyone can give on trouble shooting that one and sorting it out would be greatly appreciated. smile

If it doesn't go down or up at all and / or you heard a crunch sound then the regulator has gone. If it's that the window doesn't do the inch drop when pulling the handle the it's most likely the door microswitch. All fixes on boxa.net

So to give a little more detail ...

When I raise/drop the window on the button, it goes up/down as it should ... including the 1-shot raise/drop.

When I unlatch the roof, the window drops a solid inch or so, as it should.

When I pull the door handle (both internal & external), it makes a noise like the window wants to drop, but doesn't actually drop. Instead the window kind of twitches a mm.

Ever since I've had the car, the driver's side has dropped on a handle pull by about half the amount of the passenger side. But in the last couple of weeks it's not dropping at all.

Based on what I've seen, I'd say the door microswitches are fine, and the issue lies somewhere in the window mechanism. But it seems odd to me that it behaves normally when being commanded to raise/lower on the button or by latching/unlatching the roof, but not when being commanded to by the door handle microswitches. It's almost like there's a separate mechanism (or part of the mechanism) for that movement.

Maybe unlatching the roof removes some stress or resistance as the seals move away form the glass and this helps the window regulator do its business. But when the seals are firmly in situ it struggles. Just a guess. It cant be anything else really - it has to be the regulator ... maybe.

Tomorrow I'll be mostly trying to find out how to fix this. And trying to get the clam shell level. And recolouring the roof if it's not too warm.
No sign of any elastic ever being fitted but there's an arm which seem to hook into the seam of the roof material which pushes the roof edge to the "rain channel" except it doesn't fully work on one side..

My poverty purchase looks like it has its first big bill incoming after a couple of years as I have a fault on bank one code P1340.

I replaced the seal around the solenoid last year but the oil appears to be leaking through it rather than around. I will have to do some testing to ascertain if it’s just the solenoid at around £500 or the whole actuator at around £1500.

It’s running really lumpy at idle but fine at higher revs.

This is going to result in scope creep as I have read that the exhaust manifold needs to come off which will result in many broken studs, so I may as well swap them out for new stainless ones.

Crappy timing what with all the sunshine!
Little update on my running issues.

My car came with a fully stamped service book but little else so with that in mind and having read that the above fault code was corrected after fitting new coil packs I decided to give it a go as I have no way of knowing how old they were.

New plugs and coil packs fitted and it’s running 100 times better with just a very slight misfire; however, I now know I also have an AOS issue to sort.

5 coil packs came out looking okay but one had different markings and looked like this!!!

I fitted these 987 rear drain hole guards. £6:50 each ex VAT from Parr Porsche, Crawley. That’s poverty prices

If you meshed your front grills you could use some of the off cuts.

I took some brave pills and bought this last week after it was posted in the "What is an early 996?" thread.

Full house on the "what not to do when buying a car" bingo card...

- Bought unseen: check
- No PPI: check
- Cat D: check
- No service book: check
- No MOT: check
- Old Pirellis (fr) and budget (r) tyres: check
- Bank transfer many pounds to someone you've never met: check

To be fair to the car and the previous owner, it's actually better than I thought. MOT'd today and it sailed through with no advisories. Yay.

Took it for a spin earlier and there's a slight vibration at just over 70mph, hopefully just a wheel balance issue that will be sorted with new boots this weekend. Overall i'm feeling pretty chuffed with it.

They look like 997 wheels. If so the offset is 7mm inboard on front and 7mm out on rear. The front difference can make the steering a bit off.

Utterly marvellous.

Might we ask the level of poverty outlay?
