Nice, i'm probably going to have to sell my C4S due to a house purchase, but there will certainly be a few thousand set aside for a nice 986 of some sort I think.
I actually have a feeling that i'll probably enjoy it more...

The flight to Scotland to pick up the 2.5 Boxster was fun and made it into an adventure. The car has now turned into a hobby, and I am spending much time on the hifi and getting the on board computer working (Yes, you have one installed). The missis loves it, just keeping fingers crossed it turns out to be hassle free.

Have fun with it, and enjoy the car. BTW the 2.5 is quite light, so does have some benefits.

I forgot to add, I still have the TVR for weekend use, and the Boxster for daily use. Much better option than the wifes idea of an Audi A5.

And yes, the handling is superb :-)

Exactly. The 2.5 was phased out at the same time as the 3.2S was launched so you're looking at a chunk more cash for the faster car as it will inevitably be newer.

Nevertheless a 986 Boxster is a great car in whichever configuration, so I'm sure the OP will enjoy the sweet handling of their new wheels.

blimey - I MUST be getting old, memory failing me, not being snide ! I thought the S kicked in above the 2.5, before 2.7. Lol.

I like the purity of the original 2.5 Boxster. It's fast enough in the real world, although of course the chassis can handle a lot more power. I've only driven the 2.7 and 3.4 in anger on roads with corners and no traffic and actually slightly preferred the 2.7. Nicer sound, free revving, nimble. I imagine the 2.5 feels similar and at that sort of price what's not to like?

It joins a long line of distinguished feminine cars ranging from a 140 BHP Celica to a Merc 230SLK so I know my mates will ridicule me ....

If i get this right I can enjoy it for a year virtually free

And I know it has Tan leather, I will wear shades ..... even at night .....

Tan leather is fine. Specially in a Boxster.

Hope so, either way the purchase was a bit of an experiemnt to see if I can get back into and on with a manual car due to my knee issues, if its doesnt workout for me, will sell and break even, all being well ...

Haven't even seen the car yet !!! Collect it Saturday ....

Good for you dibbles! I had a 1998/S 2.5 for many years (4 or 5) and it was brilliant brilliant brilliant!

On track days I used to keep up with a friend in a 996 C4S (3.6L) due to cornering ability, so ignore the bull about engine size it's a great car. Even though I eventually succumbed and swapped to a 996 myself there's still plenty of times when I think fondly on my 986

BTW, regarding your comment about free motoring, in all my years with it the only thing I had to pay out for that wasn't standard stuff like tyres / pads / servicing (which is so cheap at an Indie!) was a clutch, but at 70/80k on the original I didn't even mind that. Enjoy!

cheers, and thansk for the insight, just what i wanted to hear .... I was thinking about a 996 but this came up and allows me to try at minimal risk of a big loss a Paorsche, and a manual again, if it doesnt work out for me I'll sell it in 3-4 months and go back to autos ..... if it does work, the car world becomes my oyster again ....

To tell truth, I think there's very few things things behind my switch to a 996 - to scratch the phenomenon of "the 911 itch", to get a glass rear screen (hard top) for winter (but how big a hardship is it really?) and to have the +2 seats for occasional use. Against that, the Boxster has two big boots (my 996 is a C4 so the one I do have is half full of 4x4 gubbins), handles better... I really don't feel there's too much between them and would recommend a Boxster all day long. Have a blast!

thats fairly honest, if this works out and I can handle a manual then a 996 will be next, then again, if not I'll get a 996 tip ....

So are the 2.5's a safer bet than the 2.7's in terms of 'stuff going wrong? A couple of encouraging posts on here suggest running one with no abnormal costs other than the usual stuff.

At £4-6k they look very tempting, and the "lack" of power wouldn't matter 2 hoots; mid-engined and rear wheel drive + roof off fun. Lighter too, yes? Which means easier on consumables for those days where a cheeky track outing is on the cards...

The O/H wants a Boxster but, as i'm a total Porsche virgin, I get scared by all the IMS horror stories. Should I not be...?!
