Forgetting about the 3.2 for the moment, a 3.4 litre engine is available in both the 987.1 and 987.2. Different architecture aside, they also differ slightly in capacity. The earlier M97 engine has a displacement of 3386 cc whereas the newer 9A1 engine has a displacement of 3436 cc.
The engines are very different. It wasn't until recently that i understood what the Intermediate Shaft actually does. It was then that i realised how dumb the engine design is. I'm not soap boxing just saying. I have heard very little which is positive about the gen 1 engine. So i agree with you RR. If you can stretch to a gen 2 then why would you not?

Beginning of 2012 I think, I drove my colleagues 987.2 (2.9), PDK. After my boggo 986 2.7, I thought it was like being in a super-revolution. Inside, the engine, PDK almost everything smooth, seamless. I then test drove when 981 first launched at OPC West London, S PDK. It was like being a time-machine really, comparing to 986 I think is many years away. This is not to trash or devalue 986 ofcourse, in many ways it is such a retro, analog car and fun machine. However, 987.2 or 981 is miles ahead imho and fantastic flat 6 experience without the unforeseen suprises.

In lieu of the definitive "Which Porsche engines aren't ticking bombs" guide the turbo is (I think - someone will no doubt pop up with a horror story) a safe place.
Not quite poverty pork now...

I don't agree with the engine design being 'dumb', the IMS shaft is merely a jackshaft, a common and sound engineering solution for repositioning rotating drive around things, and in the M96 case it unloads torque off the cam chains by keeping the 2:1 reduction between it and the crank, this is a clever design. The bearing issue is an isolated design issue, I would argue likely caused or influenced by financial pressures at the time. besides, you realise all the air-cooled sixes used an IMS since the 60's with no problems..

I didnt know air cooled pork had an IMS - no. To me it feels like the Intermediate Shaft is only there because the cams are driven from the rear of the engine on one side and the front of the engine on the other. I was led to believe this was to keep the cost down by having the same head casing on both sides. I've only experienced other engines with 2 heads where this is all done on the same side of the engine for both heads. This doesnt look clever to me but I am no expert.

I'm going crazy. I drive my 996 and think I want a 986. Then I think about legroom and decide I want a 987. Then I think about engines and think if going for a 987 I'd want dfi. Then I drive my 996 and .... so we go round again.

Better the devil you know. They all cost loads to maintain, and anything could go wrong on any of them. You've spent the money now, better to get some use out of it - but its never going to be box fresh unless you buy a new one.

I agree, with ooid - get a 993.

Is it wrong that I don't really like 993's? I love the cooking versions, and I've seen a couple of modified ones that are ok. But on the whole, meh

If the 996 is a good one, I’d spend a few quid freshening it up / mildly modding.

134k miles, another clean sheet MOT. I'm happy with that. Poor thing is looking a bit sorry for itself at the moment after a winter parked outside, not much washing and occasional use.

Spotted this morning. Messaged some friends for their view. Just checked back and sold already. Looked cheap to me. List of work done very impressive. I should have hit the button.
