I'm genuinely surprised just how good it is .... I usually always go for the 'top of the range model' and discount the smaller engine models in the range but given the potential bore-score issues I went for the 2.7.It sounds fantastic and is a revvy little lump. Whilst it's pace won't rip up the tarmac it's got 'just enough' grunt to make it entertaining. It handles and rides great on the smaller wheels too!
A very well looked after car, FSH, recent major service including new brakes / condensers / radiators and matching N rated tyres all round. What's not to like!
Looks lovely, congratulations on the new purchase, sounds like a fantastic buy with the recent work too.
I have toyed with the idea of a 2.7 987, but prefer the old school look of the 986 with ambers, and the slightly more torquey nature of the 3.2. I miss my old Chimaera and think the 986 will be a little closer in feel than a 987.
Thanks for the replies, my nominal budget was 7k so if I buy at 5.5 then even after a service and new boots there should still be a little left over for any immediate niggles. Hopefully will be a little while before it throws any large bills otherwise I will be in trouble with my girlfriend... The annual OPC history should increase the chance of it being a good one I hope...
No heated seats unfortunately, is it tricky to retrofit?

I used to like Eagle F1 asymmetrical on the Chimp, and would probably go with the same on the 986.
They aren't N rated, that doesn't throw up any issues with insurance etc does it?
N rated madness is only relevant to Porsche warranty. Otherwise a tyre is a tyre is a tyre. They aren't N rated, that doesn't throw up any issues with insurance etc does it?

N-rated tyres are actually tested on the models they are rated for. In my opinion, this way you get a tyre which is guaranteed to work with your car. I wouldn't call this madness, but I don't really care what tyres you put on your car either...

Did you read the question from jmsgld before you wrote this?I wouldn't call this madness, but I don't really care what tyres you put on your car either...
Not sure I would.
i've followed his build thread, also the other threads where he's having engine and alignment issues. I've also met Geraint and have seen the car, superficially it's very nice.
I feel like his maintenance of it is a bit strange, he seems to put all his attention into polishing it, painting the wheels multiple times, adding fancy little LED bulbs, etc while the nuts and bolts aren't up to par. I met him when he first had it and he asked me about the gear shift, his car had loads of slack in the gearstick and was like stirring porridge, he compared it to mine which much more precise and tight. It must totally ruin the driving experience, it was bad and it would have been something i'd have fixed straight away but there has been no mention of sorting it out in the build thread so I guess he never bothered. It's had a broken suspension hanger for about a year that's not been sorted out so it doesn't handle properly and now has minor engine issues that he can't rectify and seems like he doesn't want to take it to a garage so it's now off the road due to the issues and he's trying to sell it for spares or repairs. A bit odd but I guess everyone is different, my Boxster is lucky to get a wash.

Geraint's thread is a good read, some of the bits he has done I like, others less so. Overall it's a great source of inspiration for odd jobs to do, and the paint for a 100k mile car looks amazing. The head unit looks impressive but I just don't think I could be bothered, I used to do things like that but in my experience they were always plagued with little niggles that are just too annoying.
I'm not too bothered what my cars look like, I generally only ever wash my cars when it comes time to sell them..
I don't think he ever got around to installing the heated seats. I'd be happy with a non OEM switch just hidden away so wiring shouldn't bee too hard, just getting the heater elements between the leather and the foam that concerns me. How do you get the leather off, presumably it is stitched all the way round? Do they look like sports seats in the photo? Can anyone tell anything else about the spec from the photo?
I found the GY E F1s great on the Chimp, a decently stiff sidewall, great lateral grip and a progressive loss at the limit. They are also pretty cheap... I would say that the chimp and 986 have a lot more in common than the 986 and many other Porkers.
