In May I took my 986S over to Berchtesgaden (south eastern Germany right on the Austrian border). It was epic. 2000 miles in total, with the longest stint being 650 miles from there over to near Reims on the way back. The car was faultless. Roof down most of the way. Great stereo. Enough luggage space for our gear plus plenty of tools, food, water, etc in the frunk.Great memories. And Boxsters do make a brilliant GT car. We're doing something similar next year.
Oh, and it did 36 mpg over the 2000 miles, including plenty of time on the autobahns at 100+, but mostly cruising at about 80.
Epic cars.

Jeez, thats a beauty. Sounds like a great trip PTF!
They are great long distance cars, had awful traffic all the way back between the south and Reims, we were in it for about 11 hours, felt fine at the other end. For a bit of that journey we followed another one in black with the number plate "MY03BOX", don't suppose it was anyone on here?
Maybe 5 years ago I took it down into Spain. Like you, on both trips, I had the roof down most of the time. I couldn't comment on the fuel economy though, the peage's make mpg almost irrelevant. Luggage space was slightly limited on the return leg due to the amount of wine it was deemed necessary to bring home but it all fitted in, in the end.
I looked at changing last year but really where would you go? For me a 987 doesn't offer enough of an upgrade, for me at least, and you'd have to start looking at at least 4 or 5 times it's value before you got to what I'd really like, a 981 GTS and I'm far too tight for that. I guess I kind of enjoy the rawness of the 986 too. Then you factor in that you can leave it wherever you want and there's nothing else that will do the job.
I love this thread, guys, long may it continue!

Cheers. It was for my wife's 40th. We're both into history, with me particularly interested in WW2, so it was a car and history themed tour. They are great long distance cars, had awful traffic all the way back between the south and Reims, we were in it for about 11 hours, felt fine at the other end. It was a great trip. Stopped at Spa Francorchamps on the way through Belgium (best pizza EVER in Francorchamps for lunch), then onto the V8 Motorworld Hotel in Stuttgart (a must for a car fan). Next day onto Dachau (amazingly humbling). Then onto the alps to Kempinski Obersalzberg which is an area covered in WW2 history. Up to see the Eagle's Nest, which i cycled up (3000ft) the next day. Then on the way home stopped at a couple of WW1 memorials in northern France. Quick night over in a cheap hotel before visiting La Coupole (AMAZING) before hitting the ferry.
Great trip
You're right. It's not easy to think of a car that would replace it considering the values.

I think he's referring to the advert, which is a 996 listed as a 993.wjb said:
That's very nice.
Was it within "poverty" budget? (Under £5k)
It certainly was, hugely within budget cos the roof’s got a slight split at the edge under the tonneau and the cables are a bit juddery, exhaust has a rattle (heat-shield?) and all 4 tyres have cracks in the sidewalls. Was it within "poverty" budget? (Under £5k)
Needs a bit of tlc but I’m in no rush now
