I agree that a car that has been crashed, the damaged pulled out and new panels fitted would be substantially weaker in an accident but I don't think that point stands for a replacement front tub (providing it's fitted correctly). It's a repair Porsche themselves carry out.
Exactly. But cars can be damaged and then fixed without them becoming cat listed cars or write offs. My first Boxster was repaired by Porsche and then not listed as a write off. If you bought that car from a Porsche garage you would never know. I've read threads on here where people have spent 50 plus thousand on a GT3 from a Porsche garage to then discover it was crushed in a massive accident and then re-shelled. So the point still stands. You just dont know what has happened to a car before you buy it and you cant trust that buying from a garage will mitigate this risk. Cars get damaged and fixed every day and most are not listed as a write off. The more expensive the car then the more likely it will be repaired without becoming a write off.
I always think the worst case scenario with slight issues on advertised cars. Who really advertises a Boxster with a misfire if all it needs is a £30 coil pack and half hour to fit it? I'd personally assume something more sinister.
A mate sold a car with the ABS light on, he advertised it as such. Most people would probably think "just a sensor". My mate knew different, it was the ABS pump and about an £800 job at a dealer. Same whenever you see a car advertised with A/C that doesn't work but "just needs re-gassing". That's never the case.
You need to be aware of what you're buying otherwise you could end up with a nightmare. Take some diagnostic equipment.

Has anyone sold a car recently where the buyer scans for faults like that?A mate sold a car with the ABS light on, he advertised it as such. Most people would probably think "just a sensor". I had my 550i re-gassed when I bought it. The ac failed again with a few days. I presumed it needed new condenser. Then last year a different garage re-gassed and ac working fine now. Sometimes it can be simple and good news.
Not for air con but you can scan for ABS, automatic transmissions, etc. While it can be a simple fix sometimes, the point i'm making is don't assume best case scenario when buying a car, like it being a £30 coil pack on this Boxster causing the misfire seems rather optimistic. I'd expect that the owner has checked that and it's something more serious. Often sellers know exactly what's wrong (often the reason why they are getting rid) and they under play the issue or say they've not looked into it in the hope of reeling in someone nieve. That said, i'm not saying it's a bad buy, it's worth more in parts.

Thanks chaps. I've decided against it tbh - it's local so thought it maybe worth a look but the guy who owns it has only had it a few months which to me suggests it's something more costly and he's punting it on. It's on eBay btw
Do you have the link?I could not see it on ebay, maybe it has sold
Cheers

I think you did the right thing. IME people who are selling a car on with a known fault that devalues the car are doing so because the cost to repair it is prohibitive.New battery required on my 986.
I drive it every 4 or 5 days, and dont own a trickle charger (it used to hold charge fine, if not being drove for a week)
More recently its needed jump starting every time i use it!
Euro car parts currently have a 50% sale on so a new Bosch S5 Battery is on its way for £90 with 5yr warranty
Next items on the list: New roof switch, as mine it intermittent. Possibly exhaust bypass mod, or a different system to get a little more noise out of the 2.7

That's the one i was referring to above. If you watch his videos you'll see he immediately bought a tyre and some other bits and pieces. 7 grand sounds more realistic to me but still very very cheap. I dont like the way the car seems to crash over bumps and the pee shooter exhaust pipes look shocking.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I think I've finally discovered what the strange clunking noise was when first accelerating. Turns out something in the clutch has given up and the last time I drove it home it refused to go into any gears with the engine running.
Managed to limp it the last bit of the way by sticking it in first and pulling away on the starter motor but it's not going much further without a load of new parts.
Right pain since it's my daily.

Just before my gearbox disintegrated I had .... see video. The clutch was working fine but the innards of the box were not.Managed to limp it the last bit of the way by sticking it in first and pulling away on the starter motor but it's not going much further without a load of new parts.
