£20k, your in the wrong thread
I'm happy to pay much less! Hence asking for suggestions - do I go for a 13-14k early c2 (or C4 which I'm only looking at thanks to PPBB), have a few k set aside for any potential issues, enjoy?
Or spend at the purchase point, and go for a fully sorted rebuilt engine - perhaps in a later variant with a little more power?
As for 500 miles a week - it's a GT! Compared to my current 98 MX5 (which I've put 40k on, involving a blown head gasket, full forged engine rebuild, bespoke valved dampers, full suspension refresh (at similar to Porsche prices for the materials used), etc. etc.) it should be a doddle - I'll not have to worry about the chassis dissolving around me!
It'll get fluids every 6 months, and more than happy to take it off the road for a couple of weeks a year for a deeper refresh. I'd be shocked if it fell apart around me, or cost a ridiculous amount to keep decent (especially seeing as it'll be one of the leggier ones at the end of my ownership, so less fussed about keeping OPC stamps in the book).
I’ve got a 00 c2 with 156k on it and I can happily jump in and run it to the office 3 hours away. I don’t daily it but could.
At least this way you’ve not blown all the cash so have a fighting fund, and it’s not going to lose more money with your 500 miles a week.
I’ve had mine just over 2 years and I’m half tempted to move it on. I bought it from a PH’er doing 400 a week in it. PM me if you think it might be for you, it’s not perfect but it sounds right up your street!
I'm a couple of months away from being able to make the purchase - spoke to a local specialist at the weekend, aim is to head over in the next couple of weeks just to try a couple of variants. 996 early c2/C4, and 997.1 c2.
Once I've done that, I'll give you a shout to see if yours is still available.
Cheers!

Thanks. As mentioned, looks v original. I also note the Porsche sports exhaust. Much better sounding than standard?
Absolutely. However, if one is not too concerned about originality, I would say a stock exhaust with bypass pipes sounds even better.
Alternatively, Carnewal will modify a stock exhaust internally to give you a similar sound with stock appearance.

My old 986 has popped up on Autotrader: HW53BWP.
Price is a bit toppy IMO, but for a keen DIYer a decent base to start from. I reckon £4,000-ish would be about right - there was a decent list of remedial work needs doing, though nothing urgent at the time.
Thought it was familiar! Can’t imagine a dealer would take £4K for it though! Price is a bit toppy IMO, but for a keen DIYer a decent base to start from. I reckon £4,000-ish would be about right - there was a decent list of remedial work needs doing, though nothing urgent at the time.

The Mot history isn't too bad for it.Well I should probably introduce myself on here ... seeing as I've now left behind the world of whirling triangles and taken the plunge on a 986 Boxster S.
The plan was to run it as a second 'fun' car alongside the daily diesel Mondeo (a direct replacement for my recently expired RX8) ... but the missus has convinced me that I should ditch the Mondeo as well as the RX8, and run the Porsche as both daily and fun car.
So on Saturday a 90 mile trip to Worksop & back has me the proud owner of a Meridian Silver 986S with a couple of nice options (xenon headlights, 6 speaker stereo, heated seats with embossed crests).
It was bit of a gamble, as while it had a full stamped service history (both main dealer & specialist), no other paperwork came with the car so no idea what work may or may not have been done over the years. However, it has one of the cleanest MOT histories I've ever seen, with only 1 fail point (for a lamp) and about 4 advisories over it's entire MOT history!
It has just ticked over 100k miles, and presented well, but not perfectly ... so ideal for a daily driver.
I paid £5100 for the car, which feels about right ... but happy to be laughed at if I've massively overpaid!
Only driven it 3 times so far - back from Worksop along the motorways, a 10 mile 'fun' drive yesterday to get to know it a little, and this morning's commute to work - so initial impressions are still very much forming. However, there are a number of things that do stand out already.
- the noise. It's a very nice noise - muted when bimbling about, much angrier when on it - but it's just too quiet. If I could find a way to keep the idea behind it, but just turn it up from say 7 (where I think it is now) to 9, then it'd be perfect.
- the low speed ride. It's very firm and fidgety when driving along gently on less than ideal surfaces (so 99% of the UK's roads! ), although it improves more and more as you push on. If there was some way of keeping the 'on it' composure, while being slightly more cossetting around town, it'd be pretty much perfect.
- brake squeal. Gentle to moderate braking at low speed elicits the sort of squeal you get when you try and confiscate a smartphone from a teenager! A decent stop or two will shut this up for a minute or so, but it returns (presumably as brake temps reduce). While it does have a little 'because racecar' sound to it, which amuses my inner 7 year old, a solution for this would be helpful.

Noise - bypass or Carnewal probably the best way forward but at 100k your exhaust is possibly too far to the end of its life to make it a worth while investment. Look at a better condition second had one perhaps.
Ride - 17s ride better. Or a new set of tyres with full tread.
Brake squeal - check the shims are in place.

Thanks for that info.Ride - 17s ride better. Or a new set of tyres with full tread.

Everything looked OK with the exhaust when I had a quick glance under the car, but not had a thorough look under there yet. One to do when I get a spare weekend.
I do keep getting tempted by the cheapy Ebay exhausts (and manifolds), but my sensible side is probably going to win out on that one.
It's on 17s, with Bridgestones all round that have a fair amount of meat on them.
Can the shims be seen/felt through the wheels, or is it a wheels off job to check?
